  • This paper deals with an application of process value analysis method for a manufacturing process in order to redesign facility layout in a paper company. We have used the value analysis method which permits an overall and rigorous study of process by a functional approach. Firstly, customer's expectations for the future process are clearly and precisely expressed with specifications of the Functional Extern Analysis. The existing process is analyzed using various tool of the Functional Internal Analysis in the second part. From the results of these analysis, we find out that the main problems of current facility are due to scheduling and facility layout. This paper is devoted to resolve the second problem. We suggest an ideal solution in order to have a reference solution. Nextly, We give realistic choices and the final solution for the facility layout.

  • In almost every construction project, delay is an inevitable yet controllable phenomenon. The Indian construction industry encounters an enormous amount of delays in projects. Delay affects both time and money in the forms of schedule and cost overruns, respectively. Due to impressive and dynamic growth in the Indian construction sector, planned efforts are essential to limit these undesirable delays. On account of the surge in the rate of residential building construction, the task of identification and analysis of the delays in residential projects in India has been attempted by the authors. A questionnaire survey was conducted involving 100 stakeholders. Further analysis included an Importance Index to rank the identified delays, Principle Component Analysis for advanced statistical analysis, and Correlation Analysis to check the extent of agreement amongst stakeholders. Conclusions drawn with reference to the analysed data eventually reflected finance-related issues, as well as labour related problems as the dominating causes of delays. The aim of the research is to provide insight to the construction stakeholders and researchers, on an international scale, with the obtained results.

  • Reactivity Initiated Accident (RIA) scenarios require special attention using advanced simulation techniques due to their complexity and importance for nuclear power plant (NPP) safety. While the conservative approach has traditionally been used for safety analysis, it may lead to unrealistic results which calls for the use of best estimate plus uncertainty (BEPU) approach, especially with the current advances in computational power which makes the BEPU analysis feasible. In this work an Uncontrolled Control Element Assembly (CEA) Withdrawal at Full Power accident scenario is analyzed using the BEPU approach by loosely coupling the thermal hydraulics best-estimate system code (RELAP5/SCDAPSIM/MOD3.4) to the statistical analysis software (DAKOTA) using a Python interface. Results from the BEPU analysis indicate that a realistic treatment of the accident scenario yields a larger safety margin and is therefore encouraged for accident analysis as it may enable more economic and flexible operation.

  • Most of the mechanical structures use bolting or spot welding for the whole structure. In recent years, bolting & rivets are used rather than the welding due to reassembly and repair. Analysis of bolted joints is so complicate that many conditions must be considered such as pre-load and contact, etc.. Bolted joint analysis is done by theoretical, experimental & numerical methods. However, numerical analysis in the bolted joint is used because the contact and stress in the joints are changed due to the pre-load. In this study, we analysis the slip and the deformation of the contact area in the joint depending on the pre-load and find the optimized bolting condition.

  • Fault detection is the research focus and priority in this study to ensure the high reliability of a proposed three-level inverter. Kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) has been widely used for feature extraction because of its simplicity. However, highlighting useful information that may be hidden under retained KPCs remains a problem. A weighted KPCA is proposed to overcome this shortcoming. Variable contribution plots are constructed to evaluate the importance of each KPC on the basis of sensitivity analysis theory. Then, different weighting values of KPCs are set to highlight the useful information. The weighted statistics are evaluated comprehensively by using the improved feature eigenvectors. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated. The diagnosis results of the inverter indicate that the proposed method is superior to conventional KPCA.

  • This paper presents a simplified model to capture the nonlinear behavior of steel frames depending on the spread of plasticity method. New interaction formulae were derived to evaluate the plastic strength for I-shaped steel sections under uniaxial bending moment and axial compression load. Also, new empirical formulae were derived to evaluate the tangent stiffness modulus of steel I-shaped cross-sections considering the effect of the residual stresses suggested by the specifications in European Convention for Construction Steelworks (ECCS). The secant stiffness which depends on the tangent modulus is used to evaluate the internal forces. Based on stiffness matrix method, a finite element analysis program was developed for the nonlinear analysis of space steel frames using the derived formulae. Comparison between the proposed model results with those given by the fiber model shows very good agreement. Numerical examples were introduced to verify, check the accuracy, and evaluate the efficiency of the proposed model. The analysis results show that the new proposed model is accurate and able to minimize the solution time.

  • Recently, a high-precision ball screw is an essential part of high-speed machines. However, producing high-precision ball screws has been costly and time-consuming. Nowadays, a whirling machine is used to produce high-precision ball screws efficiently. Rotating multi-tips are used to turn the ball screw in the whirling machine. In this study, a structural analysis was performed by a finite-element method to develop a whirling machine. An improved model of the whirling machine was proposed by the analysis. In addition, a thermal analysis was performed to confirm the thermal stability. The results of the analysis can be applied in order to further develop the whirling machine.

  • It has been found that implementing the function analysis is very important in terms of accomplishing successful Value Engineering(VE), and the function definition is a basic activity at design VE phase. In spite of the importance, the real function analysis activities in the VE are not regard as consequence. In this regard, this paper attempts to use the campus mater plan to lead an effective function analysis. So, the purpose of this value engineering study is to provide the criteria to develop the campus mater plan. This value engineering study used as a guide for the standardization of the campus mater plan. In addition, broader application is possible through the analysis throughout the different ways of the project.

  • A spindle unit is very important in machine tools. It has a direct effect on machining accuracy. The static and dynamic characteristics of the spindle unit should be considered in the initial design stage for manufacturing of precision product. This study describes an investigation for deriving design stability of a 20,000rpm heavy-cutting spindle for precision machining. Static and dynamic characteristics of the spindle, such as deformation, stress, natural frequency and mode shapes are analyzed using finite element analysis. The 20,000rpm heavy-cutting spindle is confirmed that it is successfully designed through finite element analysis.

  • Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are becoming very popular in various industries due to their effectiveness of the utilization of their constituent elements. However, the modelling of these materials is difficult due to the complex nature of variation of material properties across the thickness. Many shear deformation theories have been developed and employed for the analysis of such functionally graded plates (FGPs). A recently developed inverse hyperbolic shear deformation theory has been successfully employed by Grover et al. [1] for the analysis of laminated composites and sandwich plates. The objective of the study is to obtain finite element solution for the structural analysis of functionally graded plates using inverse hyperbolic shear deformation theory. Finite element analysis facilitates the analysis of complex problems such as functionally graded plates with different boundary conditions and different loadings.
