  • A cycle simulation of 4 cycle spark ignition engine using methanol-water blend as a fuel has been developed for study of prediction of power, specific fuel consumption, mean effective pressure and thermal efficiency. One-dimensional flow model for intake process and thermodynamic model for combustion process were selected. After, performance test was made with conventional engine which was modified in consideration of fuel properties. And computational results by simulation have been compared with experimental results. As the agreement between computational and experimental results was good, prediction of engine performance by was possible.

  • Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine combines the combustion characteristics of a compression ignition engine and a spark ignition engine. HCCI engines take advantage of the high compression ratio and heat release rate and thus exhibit high efficiency found in compression ignition engines. In modern research, simulation has be come a powerful tool as it saves time and also economical when compared to experimental study. Engine simulation has been developed to predict the performance of a homogeneous charge compression ignition engine. The effects of compression ratio, cylinder pressure, rate of pressure rise, flame temperature, rate of heat release, and mass fraction burned were simulated. The simulation and analysis show several meaningful results. The objective of the present study is to develop a combustion characteristics model for a homogeneous charge compression ignition engine running with isooctane as a fuel and effect of compression ratio.

  • A program of steady-state and transient performance analysis for a 200kW-class small turboshaft engine with free power turbine was developed. An existing turbojet engine was used for the gas generator of the developed turboshaft engine, which was modified to satisfy performance requirements of this turboshaft engine. To verify the accuracy of steady-state performance program for this engine: the program was applied to the gas turbine test unit of the same type, and the analysis results were compared with experimental results. The developed transient performance analysis program using the CMF (Constant Mass Flow) method was utilized to analyze the cases of step increase and ramp increase of the fuel.

  • The purpose of this study is development of universal engine model for integrated Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) simulator and a optimization of engine model. The engine model of this study is based on the MATLAB Simulink for universal and include engine fuel economy technologies for HEV. Various engine fuel economy technologies for HEV is estimated by commercial engine 1-D simulation program - WAVE. And, the 1-D simulation model of base version is compared with engine experiment result. The analyzed engine technologies with 1-D simulation are Dual-CVVT, Atkinson-Cycle and Cylinder-Deactivation System. There are improvement of fuel economy and power performance with Dual-CVVT model at part load and full load, pumping loss reduction with Cylinder-Deactivation System at idle and regeneration. Each estimated technologies are analyzed by 1-D simulation on all operation region for base data to converse simulink. The simulink based engine model maintains a signal with ECU for determination of engine operation point.

  • Recently, the demand for improving energy efficiency has rapidly increased because of the growing concerns over environmental issues. In this work, the tribo-test and simulation for the initial wear and lubrication performance were performed for the piston pin in the small end system of the connecting rod of a marine engine, to obtain useful data for improving the efficiency of marine engine systems. In addition, a diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating was applied to the piston pin to explore feasibility of eliminating the bush used in the system. The initial wear and lubrication characteristics between the uncoated piston pin and bush were compared with that between the DLC-coated piston pin and connecting rod in the tribo-test. The simulation for the wear and lubrication performance according to the wear progression was conducted based on the data obtained from the test. The wear characteristics were quantitatively assessed by the wear depth and wear volume, and the lubrication performance was characterized with the change of pressure and minimum oil film thickness with respect to the crank angle. It was found that the DLC-coated piston pin may provide better initial wear characteristics and lubrication performance. The results of this work may provide fundamental information for marine engines with improved efficiency.

  • This paper presents vibration control performance of a passenger vehicle installed with olectro-rheological(ER) engine mounts. As a first step, a mixed-mode ER engine mount is modeled and manufactured. After verifying the controllability of the dynamic stiffness by the intensity of the electric field, ER engine mounts are incorporated with a full-car model. The governing equation of motion is then formulated by considering engine excitation force. A skyhook controller to attenuate vibration motions is designed. The controller is implemented through hardware-in-the-loop simulation and control responses are presented in the both frequency and time domains.

  • Engine performance is one of the main objectives specified at the beginning of a new engine design project. The cycle simulation for SI engine is based on the zero-dimensional gas exchange model and a heat release expression by Viebe. This program also requires minimum input data and takes only a short time to run. Heat transfer from cylinder transfer formula. The flow coefficient (effective area) is calculated from valve lift using the standard flow coefficient curve and engine friction is calculated from the Millington and Hartles' engine friction formula. The chemical species considered in burned gas are 6 species CO, CO, H$_{2}$, H$_{2}$O, $O_{2}$, N$_{2}$ and the cylinder pressure, homogeneous cylinder temperature, gas composition and burned fraction are calculated at each crank angle through the cycle. To check the validity and accuracy, experimental study was done with 3 engines for measuring cylinder pressure, indicated mean effective pressure, brake mean effective pressure and air flow rate, etc. Despite its simple assumptions, cycle simulation showes excellent breathing and performance correlation when compared with data of tested engines, and have been proved useful in engine design.

  • Turbocharger has been used to increase the performance of diesel engine, especially ship engine , for years. Recently, the turbocharger is being adopted not only for an agricultural engine but also for an automobile engine. To improve the performance of diesel engine , the problem of the reduction of A/F ratio in high speed should be solved. Turbocharger is well known for its cost effectiveness, reliability and duration . In this study, an experiment was conducted to verify simulation program . The results for natural aspiration engine and turbocharged engine were compared. In order to estimate the characteristics of exhaust gas, D-13 mode was selected. Power, torque and BSFC of turbocharged engine were increased than those of natural aspiration engine by about 48%, 46% and 5%, respectively . The components in exhaust gas except NOx from turbocharger engine were less than the amount set up for 2000-year regulation.

  • Most aircraft cruise in the stratosphere at which temperature is below $-50^{\circ}C$ md, as a result, the surface of aircraft can be iced up. Ice on the wing can change aerodynamic characteristic and results in the deterioration of its performance. Ice on the engine inlet increases the possibility of compressor blade damage and affects the performance and safety of the engine. This paper focused on the development of icing simulation device for analyzing effect of icing on engine performance. Icing simulation tests were conducted with a liquid air system and a icing simulation device and results show that icing could be simulated with this system.
