Spark plug ionization signal could be useful in an internal combustion engine as a feedback signal for combustion diagnostics such as misfire detection, knocking detection and lambda control, but the signal has high level of cyclic fluctuation in an internal combustion engine due to residual gas, pressure, temperature, mixture composition in the spark gap. Because of this reason it is very difficult to apply ion signal to commercial engine control. In this Study, a correlation between A/F and spark plug ionization signal was studied in a constant volume chamber. Constant volume chamber with gas phase fuel(Propane) has homogeneous fuel composition , no mixture flow, same pressure and temperature on each test. The results show that mean chemi-ion signal has the highest correlation with A/F and intial pressure change has on effect on the thermal-ion signal and not on chemi-ion signal.

The HCCI engine is a next generation engine, with high efficiency and low emissions. The engine may be an alternative to SI and DI engines; however, a pressure rise rate is a major limitation for high load range and power reduction. Recently, we were able to reduce the pressure rise rate using thermal stratification. Nevertheless, this was insufficient to produce high power. In this study, the reduction of the pressure rise rate using thermal stratification was confirmed and the HCCI engine power was increased using the boost pressure. The rate and engine power were produced by CHEMKIN and modified SENKIN. As a result of increasing the boost pressure, a higher IMEP was attained while the pressure rise rate increased only slightly in the HCCI with thermal stratification.
In this study, a three-dimensional transient simulation with a knock model was performed to predict knock occurrence and autoignition site in a heavy-duty LPG engine. A FAE (Flame Area Evolutoin) premixed combustion model was applied to simulate flame propagation. The coefficient of the reduced kinetic model was adjusted to LPG fuel and used to simulate autoignition in the unburned gas region. Engine experiments using a single-cylinder research engine were performed to calibrate the reduced kinetic model and to verify the results of the modeling. A pressure transducer and a head-gasket type ion-probe circuit board were installed in order to detect knock occurrences, flame arrival angles, and autoignition sites. Knock occurrence and position were compared for different piston bowl shapes. The simulation concurred with engine experimental data regarding the cylinder pressure, flame arrival angle, knock occurrence, and autoignition site. Furthermore, it provided much information about in-cylinder phenomena and solutions that might help reducing the knocking tendency. The knock simulation model presented in this paper can be used for a development tool of engine design.

The purpose of study is obtaining low-emission and high-efficiency in LPi engine with hydrogen enrichment. The test engine was named variable compression ratio single cylinder engine (VACRE). The fuel supply system provides LPG/hydrogen mixtures based on same heating value. A varied sensors such as crank shaft position sensor (CPS) and hall sensor supplies spark timing data to ignition controller. Displacement of VACRE is $1858.2cm^3$. VACRE was runned 1400rpm with compression ratio 8. Spark timing was set MBT without knocking. Relative air-fuel ratio($\lambda$) of this work was varied between 0,8 and 1.5.
Currently, there are active researches being conducted on a new combustion technology that can reduce emission quantity while enhancing vehicle performance as well as Improving fuel quality. In a gasoline engine that uses petroleum, high volatility makes it easy to jump spark ignition and prevent knocking phenomenon that occurs inside an engine. In a diesel engine that uses diesel fuel, high volatility reduces combustion residues and toxic gas and is therefore good for protecting the environment. Therefore, for fuel used in a vehicle, volatility is an important factor that influences not only engine performance but also environmental protection. This research conducted a distillation experiment using gasoline and diesel fuel for vehicles produced by domestic oil companies. The test was conducted in accordance with the method of distillation experiment described in KS M ISO3405. In addition, it used the result of analysis from the experiment to examine visual distillation characteristics of each fuel and developed a formula based on distillation temperature.

In recent years, high efficiency, high performance, and low pollutant emmision engines have been developed. Knock phenomenon has drawn interests because it became an hinderance to engine power and efficiency increase through higher compression ratio. Knock phenomenon is an abnormal combustion originated from autoignition of unburned gas in the end-gas region during the later stage of combustion process and accompanied a high pitched metallic noise. And this phenomenon is characterized by knock occurrence percentage, knock occurrence angle and knock intensity. A four cylinder spark ignition engine is used in our experiment, and its combustion chamber pressure is measured at various engine speeds, ignition timing. The data are analyzed by numerous methods in order to select the optimum methods and to achieve better understanding of knock characteristics. Methods using band-pass filter, third derivative and step method are shown to be the most suitable, while methods using frequency analysis are shown to be unsuitable. Because step method only uses signals above threshold value during knocking condition, pressure signal analyses with this method show good signal-to-noise ratio.

A free-piston hydrogen fueled engine is considered as one of the next power systems which is able to obtain high efficiency and low emission, simultaneously. In this study, in order to ensure the possibility as the next generation power system, the combustion characteristics and the performance of the free-piston hydrogen fueled engine are analyzed by using the linear RICEM for the change of injection pressure and equivalence ratio. As the results, in-cylinder maximum pressure is shown at injection pressure $P_{inj}$=6bar. Backfire phenomenon is not observed under experimental condition and knock occurs over ${\Phi}=0.8$. The thermal efficiency is the highest at injection pressure, $P_{inj}$=6bar and equivalence ratio, ${\Phi}=0.7$, respectively.

The HCCI engine is a prospective internal combustion engine with which high diesel-like efficiencies and very low NOx and particulate emissions can be achieved. However, several technical issues must be resolved before HCCI engines can be used for different applications. One of the issues concerning the HCCI engine is that the operating range of this engine is limited by the rapid pressure rise caused by the release of excessive heat. This heat release is because of the self-accelerated combustion reaction occurring in the engine and the resulting engine knock in the high-load region. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the role of thermal stratification and fuel stratification in reducing the pressure rise rate in an HCCI engine. The concentrations of NOx and CO in the exhaust gas are also evaluated to confirm combustion completeness and NOx emission. The computation is carried out with the help of a multizone code, by using the information on the detailed chemical kinetics and the effect of thermal and fuel stratification on the onset of ignition and rate of combustion. The engine is fueled with dimethyl ether (DME), which allows heat release to occur in two stages, as opposed to methane, which allows for heat release in a single stage.

A multi-zone model was used to predict the operating range of homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine, the boundaries of the operating range were determined by knock (presented by ring intensity), misfire (presented by sensitivity of indicated mean effective pressure to the initial temperature). A HCCI engine fueled with Di-Methyl Ether (DME) was simulated under different initial temperature and equivalence ratios, and the operating range was well produced by the model. Furthermore, the model was applied to develop the operating range for thermal stratification in the preceding condition of initial temperature and equivalence ratios. The computations were conducted using Senkin application of the CHEMKINII kinetics rate code.

This experimental study was conducted to investigate macroscopic characteristics of the flash boiling spray with tow component mixing fuel. Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) is a newer combustion method for internal combustion engines to reduce nitrogen oxide and particulate matter simultaneously. But it is difficult to put this combustion method to practical use in an engine because of such problems as instability of combustion in low load operating conditions and knocking in high load operating conditions. In HCCI, combustion characteristics and exhaust emissions depend on conditions of air/fuel mixture and chemical reactions of fuel molecules. The fuel design approach is achieved by mixing two components which differ in properties such as density, viscosity, volatility, ignitability and so on. We plan to apply the fuel design approach to HCCI combustion generated in a real engine, and examine the possibility of mixture formation control using the flash boiling spray. Spray characteristics of two component fuel with a flash boiling phenomenon was investigated using Shlieren and Mie scattering photography. Test fuel was injected into a constant volume vessel at ambient conditions imitated injection timing BTDC of a real engine. As a result, it was found that a flash boiling phenomenon greatly changed spray structure, especially in the conditions of lower temperature and density. Therefore, availability of mixture formation control using flash boiling spray was suggested.
