  • In this research, a computer analysis has been developed for predicting the Pipe pressure of the intake and exhaust manifold in a small single cylinder engine. To get the boundary conditions for a numerical analysis one dimensional and unsteady gas dynamic calculation is performed by using the MOC(Method Of Characteristics). The main numerical parameters are engine revolutions. to calculate the Pulsating flow which the intake and exhaust valves are working. The distributions of the exhaust pipe pressures were influenced strongly to the cylinder pressures and the shapes of exhaust pressure variation were similar to the Inside of cylinder pressure As the engine revolutions are increased. the intake pressure was lower than ambient pressure. The amplitude of exhaust pressure had increased and the phase of cylinder pressure $P_c$ is delayed and the amplitude of cylinder pressure were increased.

  • This paper suggests mathemathical engine model which can simulate generalized gasoline engine. Suggested engine model contains air/fuel inlet element, intake manifold, combustion, engine dynamics. In order to analyze a gasoline engine, physical characteristics of engine and steady state engine data should be controlled. In adaptation for abrupt change of circumstance or drive conditions, this model can analyze important physical phenomena in the intake manifold by computer simulation. This model can also evaluate statuses of drive under various working conditions precisely. Therfore, this model suggests basic datum to evaluate the engine system which are needed in designing and development of engine controller.

  • This paper deals with the effects of pulsating flow on volumetric efficiency, which may be generated during the gas exchange procedure, due to piston motion, valve event on intake and exhaust stroke and unsteady flow of turbocharger of a three-cylinder four stroke turbo-charged diesel engine. Consequently, volumetric efficiency affects significantly the engine performance; torque characteristics, fuel economy and further to emission and noise level. As the expansion ratio became larger the engine speed varies and torque increases, the pressure pulsation in an exhaust gas pipe acts as an increasing factor of intake air charging capacity totally. The phase and amplitude of pressure pulsation in the intake system only affects volumetric efficiency favorably, if it is well matched and tuned effectively to the engine. Thus, to verify the exact phase and amplitude of the pressure variation is the ultimate solution for the air-flow ratio assessment in the intake stroke. Some experimental results of pressure diagrams in the intake pipe and gas-flow of turbine in-outlet are presented, under various kinds of operating condition.

  • The investigation was conducted to analyze the exhaust emission characteristics in diesel engine according to intake air mass flow. In this study, the test diesel engine with a 5,899 cubic centimeter displacement and power of the 260 ps was used to analyze the emission characteristics according to the intake air mass flow. In addition, the test modes were applied by the ND-13 and ETC mode. In order to analyze the emission characteristics, the engine dynamometer with 440 kW and emission gas analyzer (AMA-4000) were utilized. From the experimental results, it is revealed that the NOx and HC emissions in the intake air mass flow of large amount have high levels compared to those in the intake air mass flow of small amount in the ND-13 mode. However, the PM emission was shown the opposite trend in the NOx and HC emission due to the trade-off relation between the NOx and PM.

  • In this paper, we built a three-dimensional model by applying reverse engineering techniques on targeting the intake port of 2900cc class diesel engine before that three-dimensional design technique is applied. The performance of the intake port is predicted and analysed using the computational flow analysis. Flow Coefficient and Swirl Ratio have been analyzed for two intake port models. One is the intake port for the diesel engine with plunger-type fuel system, and the other is for the diesel engine with CRDI fuel system. Computational result shows that the Flow Coefficient of the intake port with CRDI fuel system is increased upto 10 percentage compared with that with plunger-type. Also, the intake port with plunger-type has high Swirl Ratio at high valve lift, and the intake port with CRDI fuel system has high Swirl Ratio at relatively low valve lift. It is believed that because of high performance of the fuel injector, the intake port with CRDI fuel system is designed for more air amount and not much swirl flow at high valve lift. However, high swirl flow is required at low valve lift for initial fuel and air mixing. The result of this study may be useful for the re-manufacturing industry of automotive parts.

  • The dependence of the ignition timing in an HCCI engine on intake temperature and pressure, equivalence ratio, and fuel species is investigated with a zero-dimensional model combined with a detailed chemical kinetics. The accuracy of the model is evaluated by comparing measured and computed results in a propane-fueled HCCI engine. It is shown that the peak pressure values are reproduced within 10% and ignition timing within 5$^{\circ}$ CA. The heat loss through the walls is found to affect significantly on the ignition timing for different inlet conditions. It is also shown that for the propane-fueled engine, the tolerance in intake temperatures is 20-25K and the tolerance in intake pressure is about 1 bar for stable operation without misfire or too early ignition. Comparison of propane and heptane fuels indicates that the tendency to misfire when heptane is employed as the fuel is less than that when propane is employed with the same wall temperature conditions. However, the heptane-fueled engine may have a lower compression ratio to avoid too early ignition and hence lower efficiency. For the selected set of engine parameters, stable operations might be achieved for the heptane-fueled engine with twice as much tolerance in intake temperatures as for the propane-fueled engine.

  • Engine noise is one of the major causes of the interior noise, and so has been studied in various ways in recent days. Recently Intake noise has been extensively studied to reduce the engine noise. Conventional method to reduce the noise is adding several resonators to the induction system. However this causes a reduction of engine output power and an increase of fuel consumption. In this study, the prototype of Active Intake Noise Control System is developed by using the Filtered-x LMS algorithm to reduce the Intake noise during acceleration. Intake noise is more excessively increased when the engine is rapidly accelerated. So, Normalized LMS algorithm is applied to improve the control performance under the rapid acceleration.

  • Two engines, one is conventional DOHC 4 valve and the other is narrow valve angle, were used to compare the characteristics of swirl motion generation in the cylinder. One intake port is deactivated to induce swirl flow. A PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) was applied to measure in-cylinder velocity field according to inlet valve angle during intake and compression stroke. The results show that the flow patterns of narrow valve engine are much more stable and well arranged compared with the normal engine over the entire intake and compression stroke except early intake stage, and very strong swirl motion is generated at the end of compression stage in this engine nevertheless using straight port which is unfavorable for swirl generating. In the normal engine, however, strong swirl motion induced during intake stroke is destroyed as the compression progresses.

  • Reduction of the atmospheric pressure in high altitude affects brake booster system which was operated by the difference between the intake pressure and the atmospheric pressure. So, braking system can not stably perform due to decrease of brake boost pressure. In this study, effects of altitude change on engine intake pressure was analyzed by prediction model of engine intake pressure which was studied previously. And engine intake pressure was simulated by simulation model in various driving conditions and environmental conditions.
