The contaminated engine oil by fuel can intimidate driver safety due to vehicle problems such as engine abrasion, fire and sudden unintended acceleration. In this study, we investigate various functional properties of the engine oil contaminated with fuel. The test results indicated that the engine oil contaminated with fuel had relatively low values of the flash point, pour point, density, kinematic viscosity and cold cranking simulator. Furthermore, a four ball test suggested that the contaminated engine oil increased wear scar due to the poor lubricity. Moreover, SIMDIST (simulated distillation) using ASTM D2887 was applied to analyze fuel characteristics in an engine oil. The SIMDIST analysis result showed a lower carbon number, and the fuel was detected at an earlier retention time than that of using engine oil in chromatogram. Also, it is possible to quantitatively analyze for fuel contents in the engine oil. The SIMDIST method for the diagnosis of oil conditions can be used whether the fuel was involved or not, instead of analyzing other physical properties that require various analytical instruments, large volumes of oil samples, and long analysis time.

An expert system for stroke diagnosis was designed in this study. The causes of stroke in the central nervous systems are very diverse, symptoms may not appear in the early stage, so diagnosis ran be difficult. Also, doctors who treats patients with stroke must have expert knowledge for the quick and correct impending diagnosis. Therefore, an expert system for assisting the impending diagnosis of stroke has needed to be developed. In addition, the diagnosis system can be used as an simulator for medical students who study neurology. In this study, and diagnosis expert system was developed. It serves a pathological data bus provided by an interface. An inference engine makes an impending diagnosis of stroke possible. We implemented the system using Windows2000 Server, IIS5.0 and ASP.

In order to meet the recently enhanced emission standards at home and abroad, it is necessary to develop the CRDI ECU control algorithm that users can adjust fuel injection timing and amount in response to their needs. Therefore, this study developed the simulator for knocking analysis that enables knocking discrimination and engine balance correction applicable to the ECU exclusive to the industrial CRDI engine. The purpose of this study is to provide the driver-oriented diagnostic service that enable drivers to diagnose vehicles directly by developing diagnostic devices for vehicles with ths use of the results of the developed simulator for knocing analysis according to the OBD-II standards. For this purpose, this study aims to improve the fuel efficiency of vehicles by proposing the S/W design method of the OBD-II diagnosis device that can provide real-time communcations with the use of wired system and bluetooth module as a wireless system to send and recevice automobile fault diagnosis signal and sensor output signal, and to suggest an improvement for engine efficiency by minimizing the generation of harmful exhaust gas.

The operation of a gas-turbine engine gradually deteriorates the performance of its main components and often generates the defects of its components. The GPA method has been usually used for the diagnosis of the deterioration. In this study, the diagnostic code of the engine performance using the thermodynamic sensitivity between the sensed parameters and the health parameters has been developed without an application of the commercial program. The single performance deterioration of the turbo-shaft engine for SUAV has been estimated with this code.

The direct injection (DI) diesel engine has become a prime candidate for future transportation needs because of its high thermal efficiency. However, nitrogen oxides (NOx) increase in the local high temperature regions and particulate matter (PM) increases in the diffusion flame region within diesel combustion. Therefore, the demand for developing hybrid system consist of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and aftertreatment system as well as diesel particulate filter (DPF) or lean NOx trap (LNT) should be applied. The variation of EGR rate due to the malfunction of EGR valve can affect not only the combustion stability of engine but also the performance of aftertreatment system. In this research, 2.0 liter 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine was used to investigate the combustion and emission characteristics for various operating conditions with EGR. While the fuel consumption was increased with increase of EGR rate, NOx emission was improved by maximum 90% at low speed, low load operating condition. To achieve combustion stability and reliability of aftertrearment system with minimum penalty in fuel consumption and emissions, the fault diagnosis of EGR malfunction must be employed.

An intelligent performance diagnostic computer program of a gas turbine using the NN(Neural Network) was developed. Recently on-condition performance monitoring of major gas path components using the GPA(Gas Path Analysis) method has been performed in analyzing of engine faults. However because the types and severities of engine faults are various and complex, it is not easy that all fault conditions of the engine would be monitored only by the GPA approach. Therefore in order to solve this problem, application of using the NNs for learning and diagnosis would be required. Among then, a BPN (Back Propagation Neural Network) with one hidden layer, which can use an updating learning rate, was proposed for diagnostics of PT6A-62 turboprop engine in this work.

Four-stroke cycles in an automobile engine are suction stroke, compression stroke, combustion stroke and exhaustion stroke. A normal operation of engine in compression and power stroke must be processed in optimal fuel-air pressure. In this paper we describe a development of measuring equipment for engine cylinder pressure with observing supply current to self motor(start motor). By comparing the current wave on pressure of the 4 or 6 cylinder in engine, a abnormal cylinder state will be found. The validity of the proposed measuring equipment was shown by experiment for real automobile.

In this research, we propose a mechanism to develop an inference engine and expert systems based on relational database (RDB) and SQL (structured query language). Generally, former researchers had tried to develop an expert systems based on text-oriented knowledge base and backward/forward (chaining) inference engine. In these researches, however, the speed of inference was remained as a tackling point in the development of agile expert systems. Especially, the forward inference needs more times than backward inference. In addition, the size of knowledge base, complicate knowledge expression method, expansibility of knowledge base, and hierarchies among rules are the critical limitations to develop an expert system. To overcome the limitations in speed of inference and expansibility of knowledge base, we proposed a relational database-oriented knowledge base and forward inference engine. Therefore, our proposed mechanism could manipulate the huge size of knowledge base efficiently. and inference with the large scaled knowledge base in a short time. To this purpose, we designed and developed an SQL-based forward inference engine using relational database. In the implementation process, we also developed a prototype expert system and presented a real-world validation data set collected from medical diagnosis field.

The behavior of the injection system was determined through FFT and PSD analysis of the pressure data of the common rail, and when the diesel fuel is mixed with water, the pressure data of the common rail, depending on the water content and engine rotation speed, represent a different frequency component distribution. Recently, a theory has been suggested that mixing diesel fuel with water controls engine overheating, fuel efficiency, NOx, CO, etc., but if water content exceeds 10%, it can have a fatal adverse effect on the engine's injection system. In the future, it is necessary to promote fault diagnosis and prediction studies of diesel engines using FFT and PSD results from common rail pressure data.
There has been some research in the equipment defect detection based on vibration information. Most research of them is based on vibration monitoring to determine the equipment defect or not. In this paper, we introduce more accurate system for engine defect detection based on vibration information and we focus on detection of engine defect for boat and system control. First, it uses the duplicated-checking method for vibration information to determine the engine defect or not. If there is a defect happened, we use the method using error part of vibration information basis with error range to determine which kind of error is happened. On the other hand, we use the engine trend analysis and standard of safety engine to implement the vibration information database. Our simulation results show that the probability of engine defect determination is 100% and the probability of engine defect classification and detection is 96%.
