  • The objective of this study was to use the Lanchester equation to predict the outcome of our engagement between our unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) (Blue Group) and enemy UAV (Red Group). Lanchester's law states that the power of corps is proportional to the number of combatants. A second law states that the power of corps is proportional to the square of the number of combatants. The first law is a suitable law for guerrilla warfare while the second law is known as the law suitable for all-out war. Therefore, the second law is commonly used. The second law of Lanchester's was used in this study to predict engagement results. We estimated the battle loss rate value to win the battle as well as the required power number. We also predicted power number to make the damage of our group less than one. The battle loss rate to reliably receive victory when the enemy's UAV and the ally's UAV are equal in number of combat units must be 1: 1.5 or more.

  • For implementing the proportional navigation guidance law on passive homing missiles equipped with strapdown imaging infrared seekers, the line-of-sight angles and rates with respect to the inertial frame should be estimated by carefully handling the parasitic instability effect due to the seeker's latency. By introducing a new state vector representation along with the Pade approximation for compensating the time-delay of the seeker, this paper proposes a new guidance filter structure, stochastic dynamic models and measurement equations, in three-dimensional homing problem. Then, it derives the line-of-sight angle and rate estimator in general two-dimensional engagement by applying the extended Kalman filter to the proposed structure. The estimation performance and the characteristics of the proposed filter were evaluated via a series of numerical experiments.

  • This paper presents the characteristics of surface roughness and cutting force in ultraprecision cutting of aluminium alloy using natural diamond tools whose edge radii are smaller than those of tools made of other materials. The feed rate and depth of engagement were set to be a micrometer order. After measuring the surface roughness of machined surface and cutting force for each cutting condition, the relations between the surface quality and its condition were investigated qualitatively. If the feed rate was under a certain limit, the machined surface quality was deteriorated unexpectedly. This is supposed to have happened due to vibration leading its condition to abnormal one. In a certain situation the machined surface roughness by a natural diamond tool was inferior to that made by a carbide tool whose cutting edge radius is larger. This is supposed to be caused by not normal machining but burnishing effect.

  • In order to clarify detailed mechanism of the flexible disk grinding system, workpiece length was introduced and its performance was evaluated. Flat zone ratio increased as the workpiece length increased. Increasing wheel speed and depth of cut also enhanced process performance by producing larger flat zone ratio. Neural network system was successfully applied to predict minimum depth of engagement and flat zone ratio. An additional input parameter as workpiece length to the neural network system enhanced the prediction performance by reducing error rate. By rearranging the Input combinations to the network, the workpiece length was precisely predicted with the prediction error rate lower than 2.8% depending on the network structure.

  • Successful deployment of a situated public display relies on its ability to engage many users steadily and for a considerable length of time. Despite an abundance of valuable findings from previous studies, questions remain as to the keys to such success. In this work, to evaluate its ability to actively entice users to participate in an interactive public display, we compared 3 types of touch-based interaction modes on a multi-touch based public display, the Wall of Quiz, each mode providing, respectively, (1) a funny video clip, (2) a quiz game, (3) a quiz with an encouraging message for 10 consecutive correct answers. We videotaped user behavior in the wild, having developed the Mensecond as an evaluation index, and found that mode (3) resulted in a significantly higher Mensecond rate. This result implies that the provision of motivation leads to in-depth engagement in display content, which may in turn result in successful delivery of such information as ads, notices, campaigns, and so on.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate pregnancy, abortion and delivery rates among Korean teenagers. The subjects of this study were 11,433 teenagers aged 13-19 years in Seoul, Pusan, Taegu, Kwangju, Incheon, Taejeon and Ansan, Korea. Data were collected from Feb. 1994 to May 1995, 16 months, by schoolnurses or the researchers. The results showed pregnancy rate was 7.2 per 1,000 teenagers, the abortion rate was 4.3 per 1,000 teenagers, and the delivery rate was 1.2 per 1,000 teenagers. In the pregnancy experience, the main factors related to teenage pregnancy were love or marriage engagement. In the abortion experience, 53.9% of teenagers had had more than two abortion experiences, 38.1% midtrimester abortion, 22% complications after abortion, 36.0% sexual activity after abortion and 86.7% the financial support from partners or friends for abortion. In the delivery experience, 64.3% of teenagers delivered with no prenatal care and 42.9% had a delay in realizing they were pregnant. Fifty percent were delivered by non-professionals in non-medical institutions.

  • A practical recursive WLS (weighted least squares) algorithm is proposed to estimate relative range using LOS (line-of-sight) information for ASM (anti-ship missile) application. Apart from the previous approaches based on the EKF (extended Kalman filter), to ensure good convergence properties in long range engagement situations, the proposed scheme utilizes LOS rate measurements instead of conventionally used LOS angle measurements. The estimation error property for the proposed filter is investigated and a simple error compensator is devised to enhance its estimation error performances. Simulation results indicate that the proposed filter produces very accurate range estimates with extremely small computations.

  • This paper deals with the precision cutting characteristics of mono-crystal diamonds poly-crystal diamonds and tungsten carbide tool on ductile material. The cutting tests were carried out under various uncut chip areas and 20${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ depth of engagement. The machinability in precision machining was discussed from the viewpoints of the normal cutting forces and the surface roughness of the workpiece. As the feed rate decreases the normal force difference for cutting edge radii appears to large. In various cutting edge radii the surface roughness difference when cut the copper which is ductile material than the aluminium alloy is large. As the same cutting condition the hardness value on cut surface with the diamond tool appears to be smaller than that of the tungsten carbide tool.

  • This paper introduces the structure and effects of Kakao's news curation algorithm, which is created based on the Deep Reading Index (DRI). The DRI examines the extent of deep reading through content reading time, that is, the duration of reader engagement with an article. Current news curation algorithms focus on reader choice, with the click-through rate or pageviews as the gauge for consumption frequency. DRI is a product of the challenge of introducing and adopting a new factor called 'consumption time' instead of 'frequency of consumption', which is the basis of existing curation algorithms. The analysis of DRI-based services proves that the new algorithm can act as a curation system that is more effective in providing in-depth and quality news reports.
