미생물 연료 전지와 전력 조절 시스템을 이용한 생체 유기 물질로부터의 전력 생산 (Energy Harvesting from Bio-Organic Substance Using Microbial Fuel Cell and Power Conditioning System)

  • This study presents a bio-chemical energy harvesting system which can generate electric power from bioorganic substance contained in vermicompost. It produced electricity by inoculating microbial fuel cell(MFC) with earthworm-composted food waste. The generated electricity was converted into usable voltage level for mobile electronics through power conditioning circuits. The implemented prototype showed $200{\mu}W$ of maximum output electric power, which successfully supplied a beacon device which continuously transmitted data to nearby smartphone without a battery. The proposed system can help develop portable or bio-mimetic energy supply for sustainable use with further improvement.

  • Wireless sensor networks offer an attractive solution to several environments, security, and process monitoring problems. However, one barrier for their full adoption is the need to provide electrical power over extended periods of time without the need of dedicated wiring. Energy harvesting offers good solutions to this problem in several applications. This paper surveys the energy requirements of typical sensor network nodes and summarizes the future research work in the field of energy harvesting resource allocation in wireless sensor networks.

  • Energy harvesting from the vibration through the piezoelectric effect has been studied for powering the wireless sensor node. As piezoelectric unimorph cantilever structure can transfer low vibration to large displacement, this structure was commonly deployed to harvest electric energy from vibrations. Piezoelectric unimorph structure was composed of small stiff piezoelectric ceramic on the large flexible substrate. As there is the large Young's modulus difference between the flexible substrate and stiff piezoelectric ceramic, flexible substrate could not homogeneously transfer the vibration to stiff piezoelectric ceramic. As a result, most piezoelectric ceramics had been broken at the certain point. We measured and analyzed the stress distribution on the piezoelectric ceramic on the cantilever.

  • 본 논문에서는 순환형 하이브리드 초소형 에너지 수확장치 장치에서 존재하는 거동해석을 수행한다. 이 거동해석은 더 많은 에너지를 생산하기 위해서 비선형 시스템이 요구되므로 비선형 시스템의 존재 유무를 확인하는 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 타켄스의 매립법을 통한 위상 공간을 재구성한다. 또한 위상 공간을 이용하여 포엔카래 맵을 구성하고 리아프노프 지수를 구하여 분석한다.

  • 본 논문에서는 진동 에너지를 이용하여 에너지를 수확하는 전파 정류 하베스팅 회로를 설계하였다. 설계된 회로는 저전압에서도 전력효율이 우수하도록 Beta-Multiplier를 이용하여 Body-Bias technique을 Negative Voltage Converter에 적용하였으며, Comparator를 Bulk-Driven type으로 설계하였다. 제안된 회로는 $0.35{\mu}m$ CMOS 공정으로 설계하였으며, 설계된 회로의 칩 면적은 $931{\mu}m{\times}785{\mu}m$이다.

Modified PSO Based Reactive Routing for Improved Network Lifetime in WBAN

  • Technological advancements taken the health care industry by a storm by embedding sensors in human body to measure their vitals. These smart solutions provide better and flexible health care to patients, and also easy monitoring for the medical practitioners. However, these innovative solutions provide their own set of challenges. The major challenge faced by embedding sensors in body is the issue of lack of infinite energy source. This work presents a meta-heuristic based routing model using modified PSO, and adopts an energy harvesting scheme to improve the network lifetime. The routing process is governed by modifying the fitness function of PSO to include charge, temperature and other vital factors required for node selection. A reactive routing model is adopted to ensure reliable packet delivery. Experiments have been performed and comparisons indicate that the proposed Energy Harvesting and Modified PSO (EHMP) model demonstrates low overhead, higher network lifetime and better network stability.

Outage Analysis and Optimization for Four-Phase Two-Way Transmission with Energy Harvesting Relay

  • This paper investigates the outage performance and optimization for the four-phase two-way transmission network with an energy harvesting (EH) relay. To enable the simultaneous information processing and energy harvesting at the relay, we firstly propose a power splitting-based two-way relaying protocol (PSTWR). Then, we discuss its outage performance theoretically and derive an explicit expression for the system outage probability. In order to find the optimal system configuration parameters such as the optimal power splitting ratio and the optimal transmit power redistribution factor, we formulate an outage-minimized optimization problem. As the problem is difficult to solve, we design a genetic algorithm (GA) based algorithm for it. Besides, we also investigate the effects of the power splitting ratio, the power redistribution factor at the relay, and the source to relay distance on the system outage performance. Finally, extensive simulation results are provided to demonstrate the accuracy of the analytical results and the effectiveness of the GA-based algorithm. Moreover, it is also shown that, the relay position greatly affects the system performance, where relatively worse outage performance is achieved when the EH relay is placed in the middle of the two sources.

채널 센싱 기반의 무전원 백스케터 센서 네트워크의 성능 (Performance of Battery-less Backscatter Sensor Networks Based on Good Channel Sensing)

  • 본 논문은 무전원의 백스케터 통신이 결합된 RF 에너지 하비스팅 시스템에서 주파수 자원의 효율을 높이기 위한 스펙트럼 센싱 알고리즘을 연구했다. 송신기 측에 스팩트럼 센싱 알고리즘을 이용해서 유휴주파수 대역을 찾고, 찾은 유휴주파수 대역 중에서 페이딩 영향이 적은 채널을 선택한다. 알고리즘을 적용한 송신기는 페이딩의 영향이 적은 신호를 송신하여, 수신측에서 수신신호의 간섭을 완화시키고, 수신신호강도를 향상시킬 수 있다. 따라서, 백스케터 통신이 결합된 RF 에너지 하비스팅에 스팩트럼 센싱 알고리즘이 적용된 송신기를 사용하고, 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션 결과를 통해 백스케터 통신의 BER과 수신거리별 수신세기, 그리고 RF 에너지 하비스팅의 성능이 이전보다 향상하는 것을 확인하였다.

  • The on-board appendages of satellites with mechanical moving parts such as the fly-wheel, the control-moment gyro, the cryocooler, and the gimbal-type directional antenna can generate an undesirable micro-vibration disturbance, which is one of the main causes of the image-quality degradation that affects high-resolution observation satellites. Consequently, the isolation of the micro-vibration issue has always been considered as salient, and the micro-vibration is therefore the focus of this study wherein a complex system that can provide the dual functions of a guaranteed vibration-isolation performance and electrical energy harvesting is proposed. The vibration-isolation and energy-harvesting performances of the complex system are predicted through a numerical analysis based on the characteristics that are obtained from component-level tests. In addition, the effectiveness of the complex system that is proposed in this study is verified through an assembly-level functional-performance test.

  • 본 논문에서는 압전 소자를 이용한 진동에너지 하베스팅 회로를 설계하였다. 압전소자의 전력-전압 특성을 이용해 최대 전력을 부하로 전달하기 위한 MPPT(maximum power point tracking control) 제어 기능을 추가하였다. MPPT 회로는 전파 정류회로의 개방회로 전압을 주기적으로 샘플링하여 최대 가용전력이 생성되는 지점을 추적하고 이를 부하로 전달한다. 진동에너지 하베스팅 회로는 $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS 공정으로 설계하였다. 최대 전력 효율은 91%이고, pad를 제외한 칩 면적은 $1,100{\mu}m{\times}730{\mu}m$이다.
