This paper focuses on the electrical modeling techniques of renewable energy sources and storage devices such as batteries, fuel cells (FCs), photovoltaic (PVs) arrays, ultra-capacitors (UCs), and flywheel energy storage systems (FESS). All of these devices are being investigated recently for their typical storage and supply capabilities for various industrial applications. Hence, these devices must be modeled precisely taking into account the concerned practical issues. An obvious advantage of electrically modeling these renewable energy sources and storage devices is the fact that they can easily be simulated in real-time in any CAD simulation program. This paper reviews several types of suitable models for each of the above-mentioned devices and the most appropriate model amongst them is presented. Furthermore, a few important applications of these devices shall also be highlighted.
It is fascinated research theme to store electric energy as much as possible and to utilize it at the point of proper time. Especially, the demand for energy storage devices has been increased based on the interest for distributed generation and smartgrid. As the results for a number of researches on it, various types of energy storage devices have been developed. Each devices have its own dynamic characteristics, power capacity, and storage capacity followed by storage mechanism. In this paper, the comparison research for various energy storage devices has been performed based on power capacity, storage capacity, discharging time, lifetime, efficiency, and cost. Application researches of SFES(superconducting flywheel energy storage), characterized as 300kW-100kWh, have been performed also.
Currently, hybridization of energy generator and storage devices is considered to be one of the most important energy-related technologies due to the possibility of replacing batteries or extending the lifetime of a batteries in accordance with increasing battery demand. This review aims to describe current progress on the mechanical energy generator and hybridization of energy generator and energy storage devices for self-powered electronics. First, the research trends related to energy generation devices using piezoelectric and triboelectric effect that convert physical energy into electric energy is introduced. In addition, integration of energy generators and energy storage devices is introduced. In particular, self-charging energy cells provide an innovative approach to the direct conversion of mechanical energy into electrochemical energy to decrease energy conversion loss.

Recently, integrated electric propulsion system has been vigorously adopted into naval vessels. To enhance effectiveness and efficiency of power management in these propulsion systems, this paper investigates necessity of energy storage devices and their operation strategies. By introducing the energy storage devices, engine can operate at higher efficiency point and accordingly costs for fuel and maintenance are significantly reduced. In addition, transient performance can also be improved with support of the devices and it leads to stable operation of shipboard power bus. To validate the proposal of this paper, computer simulation has been conducted with real load data of existing electric propulsion system.

Fuel conservation and environmental pollution control are the principal motivating factors that are urging at present widespread research and development activities for electric hybrid vehicles throughout the world. The paper describes different possible energy storage devices, such as battery, flywheel and ultra capacitor, and power sources, such as gasoline engine, diesel engine, gas turbine and fuel cell for next generation hybrid electric vehicle. The technology trend and comparison in energy storage and power devices indicate that battery and gasoline engine, respectively will remain the most viable devices for hybrid vehicle at least in the near future.
In general, the charge storage characteristics and overall performance of electrochemical energy devices (such as lithiumion batteries and supercapacitors) significantly depends on the structural and geometrical factors of the electrodes' active materials. The most widely used active materials of electrochemical energy storage devices are based on carbons of various forms. Each carbon type has drawbacks and advantages when used as the electrode material. Studies have been recently carried out to combine different types of carbons, in particular nanostructured carbons, in order to overcome the structure-originated limitations and thus enhance the overall electrochemical performances. In this feature article, we report the recent progress on the development of this novel class of materials (multidimensional nanocarbons), and their applications for supercapacitors. Multidimensional nanocarbons include graphenes/carbon nanotubes (CNTs), CNTs/carbon films, CNTs/fullerenes, and ternary carbon nanostructures. Various applications using these multidimensional nanocarbons have been proposed and demonstrated in the literature. Owing to the recent extensive studies on electrochemical energy storage devices and considering that carbons are their most fundamental electrode materials, the number of reports on nanocarbons employed as electrodes of the electrochemical energy storage devices is rapidly increasing. Recently, numerous multidimensional nanocarbons have been designed, prepared, and utilized as electrodes of electrochemical capacitors or supercapacitors, which are considered next-generation energy devices owing to their unique merits compared to the conventional structures. In this review, we summarize the basic motivations, preparation methods, and resultant supercapacitor performances of each class of multidimensional nanocarbons published in the literature, focusing on recent reports.

As a result of the depletion of fossil fuels and environmental contamination, it has become important to use renewable energy. For the stable utilization of renewable energy sources, energy storage devices must be used. In addition, renewable and distributed power sources with energy storage devices must operate stably under grid-connected mode. This paper proposed dynamic response modeling for renewable power generation systems including a charger/discharger with an energy storage device in order to derive a method to guarantee stable operation while fully utilizing the energy from the energy storage device. In this paper, the principle operation and design guidelines of the proposed scheme are presented, along with a performance analysis and simulation results using MATLAB and PSIM. Finally, a hardware prototype of a 1kW power conditioning system with an energy storage device has been implemented for experimental verification of the proposed converter system.
Maximizing energy efficiency minimizes the energy consumption of computation, storage and communications required for IT services, resulting in economic and environmental benefits. Recent advancement of flash and next generation non-volatile memory technology and price decrease of those memories have led to the rise of so-called AFA (All-Flash Array) storage devices made of flash or next generation non-volatile memory. Currently, the AFA devices are rapidly replacing traditional storages in the high-performance servers due to their fast input/output characteristics. However, it is not well known how effective the energy efficiency of the AFA devices in the real world. This paper shows input/output performance and power consumption of the AFA devices measured on the Linux XFS file system via experiments and discusses energy efficiency of the AFA devices in the real world.
There is an increasing interest in research to help overcome the energy crisis that has been focused on energy storage applications in various parts of power systems. Energy storage systems are good at enhancing the reliability or improving the efficiency of a power system by creating a time gap between the generation and the consumption of power. As a contribution to the various applications of storage devices, this paper describes a novel algorithm that determines the power and storage capacity of selected energy storage devices in order to improve upon railroad system efficiency. The algorithm is also demonstrated by means of simulation studies for the Korean railroad lines now in service. A part of this novel algorithm includes the DC railroad powerflow algorithm that considers the mobility of railroad vehicles, which is necessary because the electric railroad system has a distinct distribution system where the location and power of vehicles are not fixed values. In order to derive a more accurate powerflow result, this algorithm has been designed to consider the rail voltage as well as the feeder voltage for calculating the vehicle voltage. By applying the resultant control scheme, the charging or discharging within a specific voltage boundary, energy savings and a substation voltage stabilization using storage devices are achieved at the same time.
The energy storage system is considered to be one of the useful devices for energy storing and recycling. the energy storage system can save energy cost and stabilize the system voltage. This paper presents the development of two energy storage systems. One is 750V system for light rail system. the other is 1500V system for heavy rail system.
