  • Nitrogen is a serious contaminant in natural gas because it decreases the energy density. The natural gas specification in South Korea requires a $N_2$ content of less than 1 mol%. Thus, cost-effective $N_2$ removal technology from natural gas is necessary, but until now the only option has been energy-intensive processes, e.g., cryogenic distillation. Using porous materials for the removal process would be beneficial for an efficient separation of $CH_4/N_2$ mixtures, but this still remains one of the challenges in modern separation technology due to the very similar size of the components. Among various porous materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) present a promising candidate for the potential $CH_4/N_2$ separation material due to their unique structural flexibility. A MIL-53(Al), the most well-known flexible metal-organic framework, creates dynamic changes with closed pore (cp) transitions to open pores (ops), also called the 'breathing' phenomenon. We demonstrate the separation performance of $CH_4/N_2$ mixtures of MIL-53(Al) and its derivative $MIL-53-NH_2$. The $CH_4/N_2$ selectivity of $MIL-53-NH_2$ is higher than pristine MIL-53(Al), suggesting a stronger $CH_4$ interaction with $NH_2$.

  • Considerably increasing interest in using the theranostic isotopes/ isotope pairs of radiometals like $^{44/47}Sc$ and $^{64/67}Cu$ for diagnosis and/or therapeutic applications in the nuclear medicine procedures necessitates its reliable production and supply. Separation and purification of no-carrier-added (NCA) isotopes from macro quantitates of the irradiated target matrix along with other impurities is a cardinal procedure amongst several other steps involved in its production. Multitudinous methods including but not limited to liquid-liquid (solvent) extraction, extraction chromatography (EXC), ion exchange, electrodeposition and sublimation are routinely applied either solitarily or in combination for the separation and purification of radioisotopes depending on their production routes, radioisotope of interest and impurities involved. However, application of EXC though has shown promises towards the numerous separation techniques have not received much attention as far as its application prospects in the field of nuclear medicine are concerned. Advances in the recent past for application of the EXC resins in separation and purification of the several medically important radioisotopes at ultra-high purity have shown promising behavior with respect to their operation simplicity, acidic and radiolytic stability, separation efficiencies and speedy procedures with the enhanced and excellent extraction abilities. In this mini review we will be talking about the recent developments in the application and the use of EXC techniques for the separation and purification of $^{44/47}Sc$ and $^{64/67}Cu$ for medical applications. Furthermore, we will also discuss the scientific and practical aspects of EXC in the view of separation of the NCA trace amount of radionuclides.

  • This study introduced a treatment process that was developed to treat Indonesian low-rank coal with high-ash content, which has the same characteristics as residual coal from the biosolubilization process. The treatment process includes separation of ash, solid-liquid separation, pelletizing, and drying. To reduce the ash content, flotation was performed using 4-methyl-2-pentanol (MIBC) as frother, and kerosene, waste oil, and cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) as collectors. The increasing amount of collector had an effect on combustible coal recovery and ash reduction. After flotation, a filter press, extruder, and an oven drier were used to make a dried coal pellet. Then another coal pellet was made using asphalt as a binder. The compressive strength and friability of the coal pellets were tested and compared.

  • 볼텍스튜브는 고압의 가스를 이용하여 고온 가스와 저온 가스를 분리하거나 입자상 물질의 분리에 사용할 수 있는 장치이다. 이러한 볼텍스튜브의 에너지분리 특성과 물질분리 특성을 활용하여, 연소가스로부터 $CO_2$를 흡수하는 장치의 핵심부품으로 적용할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 $CO_2$ 흡수용 볼텍스튜브의 기본설계 자료를 구축하기 위하여 에너지분리 성능실험을 수행하였다. 설계를 위한 기초 자료를 확보하기 위하여, 볼텍스 발생기의 오리피스 직경, 노즐면적비 및 튜브의 길이가 에너지분리 특성에 미치는 영향력을 실험을 통하여 분석하였다. 결과적으로 오리피스 직경이 볼텍스튜브의 성능에 지배적인 설계인자임을 확인하였으며, 노즐면적비와 튜브길이의 영향력은 미미하였다. 오리피스 직경이 작고(Dc=0.6D), 노즐면적비가 중간 이상(AR=0.14~0.16)이며, 튜브 길이가 긴 모델(L=16D)이 저온 출구 측과 고온 출구 측의 열전달에서 가장 우수한 성능을 나타내었다. 본 연구의 결과는 $CO_2$흡수용 $100Nm^3$/hr급 볼텍스튜브의 기본설계 자료로 활용될 예정이다. 볼텍스튜브를 적용한 $CO_2$흡수 공정을 적용하면 기존의 대형 흡수탑 대비 상당한 공간과 에너지의 절감 효과가 기대된다.

다양한 실리콘 웨이퍼 제조를 위한 와이어 전기 방전가공 (Wire Electric Discharge Machining Process of Various Crystalline Silicon Wafers)

  • Wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) process was evaluated to slice Silicon (Si) for various applications. Specifically, various Si workpieces with various resistances, such as single and multi crystalline Si bricks and wafers were used. As conventional slicing processes, such as slurry-on or diamond-on wire slicing, are based on mechanical abrasions between Si and abrasive, there is a limitation to decrease the wafer thickness as well as kerf-loss. Especially, when the wafer thickness is less than $150{\mu}m$, wafer breakage increases dramatically during the slicing process. Single crystalline P-type Si bricks and wafers were successively sliced with considerable slicing speed regardless of its growth direction. Also, typical defects, such as microcracks, craters, microholes, and debris, were introduced when Si was sliced by electrical discharge. Also, it was found that defect type is also dependent on resistance of Si. Consequently, this study confirmed the feasibility of slicing single crystalline Si by WEDM.

  • $SO_2$ has been absorbed and separated selectively by an ionic liquid from $SO_2/O_2$ mixture decomposed from sulfuric acid during the thermochemical SI cycle for the water splitting. In order to design and operate high pressure $SO_2/O_2$ separation system, the solubility of $SO_2$ in [EMIm]$EtSO_4$ (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulfate) has been measured by Magnetic Suspension Balance at high pressure and temperature. Based on the measured solubility, a pressurized separation system was set up and operated. 194 L/h of $SO_2$($SO_2:O_2$=0.65:1) has been separated with 99.85% of $O_2$ at the vent of absorption tower, which is 22.7% of the theoretically ideal capacity of the system. This discrepancy results from the reduced contact between the gaseous $SO_2$ and the ionic liquid. Increased $SO_2$ supply, scale-up of the absorption column, and a faster ionic liquid circulation speed were suggested to improve the separation capacity.

  • The effect of various lithium sources such as LiCl, LiOH, and Li-metal on the microstructure and electrochemical properties of granulated $SiO_x$ powders were investigated. Various lithium sources were metallurgically added for a passive pre-lithiation of $SiO_x$ to improve its low initial coulombic efficiency. In spite of using the same amount of Li in various sources, as well as the same process conditions, different lithium silicates were obtained. Moreover, irreversible phases were formed without reduction of $SiO_x$, which might be from additional oxygen incorporation during the process. Accordingly, there were no noticeable electrochemical enhancements. Nevertheless, the $Li_4SiO_4$ phase changes the initial electrochemical reaction, and consequently the relationship between the microstructure and electrochemical properties of metallurgically pre-lithiated $SiO_x$ could provide a guideline for the optimization of the performance of lithium ion batteries.

  • 선택적 고체순환이 가능한 2탑 유동층 공정 개발을 위한 기초연구로 금속 망이 장착된 입자크기분리 시스템에 의해 입자크기 차이를 이용하여 고운입자와 굵은입자를 분리할 수 있는 고체분리기를 개발하였으며 고체분리속도에 미치는 유속, 고체분리기의 설치높이 및 분리면적의 영향을 측정 및 고찰하였다. 고체분리기에 의한 고체분리속도는 기체유속, 고체분리기의 설치높이, 분리면적이 증가함에 따라 증가하였다. 기체유속 및 고체분리기 설치높이 증가에 따른 고체분리속도의 변화경향은 기포크기의 변화경향과 유사하였다. 본 연구에서 개발한 고체분리기를 이용하여 굵은입자($212{\sim}300{\mu}m$)와 고운입자($63{\sim}106{\mu}m$)의 분리가 가능하였으며 고체분리속도는 4.4~127 g/min의 범위를 나타내었다. 개발된 고체분리기를 회수증진 수성가스변환 공정에 적용하여 선택적 고체순환이 가능한 2탑 유동층 공정구성을 제안하였다.

기름/물 분리막 기술에 대한 총설 (Review on Oil/Water Separation Membrane Technology)

  • 기름/물 분리막은 다른 분리 기술들에 비해 낮은 에너지 비용과 높은 성능 수준을 갖고 있다. 초친수성과 수중에서 소유성은 효과적인 기름/물 분리막을 개발하는 데 가장 중요한 요인으로 작용한다. 이와 더불어 방오속성과 생분해성도 효과적인 기름/물 분리막을 개발할 때에 고려되는 중요한 요소들이다. 본 리뷰 논문에서는 다양한 화학성분과 형태를 변형시켜 개발된 기름/물 분리막의 특성과 분리 효율을 개선한 연구들을 소개한다.

  • 본 총설은 소수성 불소수지계 분리막의 표면 개질에 대한 개론으로 다양한 표면 개질 방법 및 그 연구 결과를 중점적으로 서술하였다. PTFE로 대표되는 불소수지계 고분자 분리막은 막 증류, 유수 분리, 기체 분리를 포함한 다양한 막 분리 공정에서 사용되어왔다. PTFE 막은 내화학성, 내열성, 높은 기계적 강도와 같은 뛰어난 물성에도 불구하고 소수성 표면 특성으로 인해 기술 적용의 확장에 제한적이다. 친수성 향상을 위해 습식 화학법, 친수성 고분자 코팅, 플라즈마 처리, 조사, 원자층 증착과 같은 다양한 PTFE 표면 개질 방법을 이용하며 이를 통해 불소수지계 분리막의 응용분야가 확장될 수 있다.
