  • A Large Eddy Simulation(LES) was performed for the prediction of unsteady dispersion behavior of hydrogen fluoride (HF). The HF leakage accident occurred at the Gumi fourth industrial complex was numerically investigated using the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) based on the LES. The accident area was modeled three-dimensionally and time-varying boundary conditions for wind were adopted in the simulation for considering the realistic accident conditions. The Message Passing Interface (MPI) parallel computation technique was used to reduce the computational time. As a result, it was found that the present LES simulation could predict the unsteady dispersion features of HF near the accident area effectively. The dispersion behaviors of the leaked HF was much affected by the unsteady wind direction. The LES could predict the time variation of the HF concentration reasonably and give an useful information for the risk analysis while the prediction with the time-averaging concept of HF concentration had a limitation for the amount of HF concentration at specific location point. It was identified that the LES is very useful to predict the dispersion characteristics of hazardous chemicals.

  • The objectives were to compare the salt tolerance levels in the parental rice cultivar, Dongjinbyeo, and induced mutagenesis derived its lines for plant height, MDA, ATPase, POD, and 2-dimensional protein electrophoresis pattern in NaCl-containing hydroponic nutrient solutions. Rice plants isolated from a population of rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. Dongjinbyeo) mutation lines, which were generated in combination with in vitro selection and gamma-ray, exhibited salt tolerance. Line No. 18 had the longest plant, whereas NaCl-sensitive line (No. 25) had the shortest plant. The parent, and the sensitive line showed severe damage from salt stress. Tolerant lines (No. 18, 50) had a lower malonaldehyde (MDA) content than the sensitive one (Dongjinbyeo, No. 25) during salt stress. Several proteins showed significant quantitative variation through 2DE; phosphoribulokinase, peroxidase, oxygen evolving enhancer 1 and the $H^+-ATPase$, which are known to be involved in salt tolerance. The effect of salt on peroxidase and $H^+-ATPase$ activity in the seedlings of two groups with contrasting genotypes of rice was studied. A greater activity was recorded in the tolerant lines as compared to the sensitive ones (P<0.05, Duncan's test). The results indicate that salt tolerant lines expressed more salt stress-inducible proteins associated with salt tolerance than the sensitive lines during salt stress.

  • In this paper, a cooling system that includes a heat spreader and a natural convective heat sink is proposed for the cooling of a concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) module. The heat spreader and the natural convective heat sink are designed on the basis of previous analytical investigations. In order to evaluate the proposed cooling system, we conducted experimental investigations varying the heat rate and the inclined angle of the cooling system. From the experimental results, it is found that the proposed cooling system satisfies the design constraints for good operation of the CPV module. Finally, a correlation is suggested for estimating the effects of the heat rate and the inclined angle on the thermal performance of the natural convective heat sink is suggested.

  • The use of eco-friendly energy in the offshore plant system is expanding because conventional generators are operated by fossil fuel or natural gas. Eco-friendly energy, which replaces existing power generation methods, should be capable of generating the power for lighting protection equipment, airborne fault indication, parameter measurement, and others. Most of the eco-friendly energy used in offshore plant facilities is solar and wind power. In the case of using photovoltaic power, because the structure must be constructed based as flat solar panels, it can be damaged easily by the wind. Therefore, there is a need for a new generation system composed of a spherical structure that does not require a separate structure and is less influenced by the wind. Considering these characteristics, in this study we designed, fabricated, and tested a unit that could provide the most efficient spherical photovoltaic power generation considering wind direction and wind pressure. Our test results indicated that the proposed system reduced costs because it did not require any separate structure, used eco-friendly energy, reduced carbon dioxide emissions, and expanded the proportion of eco-friendly energy use by offshore plant facilities.

  • In this study, evaporation of LN2 non-spreading pool on concrete plate was dealt with experimentally. The thermophysical properties of concrete, which is a composite material, were obtained by minimizing the difference between the numerical analysis results obtained from the assumed properties and the results from experiments. The thermal energy required for evaporation of the liquid pool is supplied from the concrete plate and the wall of the container. As a result of the measurement, the thermal energy flowing in from the wall was negligible compared to the one supplied from the concrete plate. It was found that the measured evaporation rate of the liquid pool by the heat energy supplied through the concrete plate agrees well with the PTC model except for the initial section of the experiment. The validity of the semi-infinite assumption and the one-dimensional assumption, which are the main conditions of the PTC model, was also verified through experiments. The evaporation rate model in the non-spreading pool discussed in this study can provide a basic frame for the one in the spreading pool, which is a meaningful result considering that the spreading pool is very realistic compared to the non-spreading pool.

  • Fossil fuel energy has become a worldwide environmental issue due to its effect on global warming and depletion in its supply. Therefore, the interest in developing alternative energy source has been rising. Ocean energy, especially, has gained strength as an alternative energy source for its unlimited supply with low secondary risks. Among all the ocean energy, the west coast of Korea holds the field of large-scale energy development because of its distinctive tidal range. Tidal power plant construction at the sea may expedite multi development effects such as bridge roles, tourism resource effects and adjustability of flood inundation at the inner bay. This study introduces the validity of tidal power plant construction at Garilim Bay in west coast of Korea by examining anticipated hydraulic characteristics using EFDC model. Through EFDC numerical simulations, the feasibility of Garolim Bay as a tidal power plant field has been proved. And the most effective tidal power plant construction would be to install hydraulic turbine in the west side of bay entrance where ebb current is stronger, and install water gate in the east side of bay entrance where the flood current is superior.

  • This study is to analyse the feasibility for providing Co-generation plant in Apartment Complex for 4 typical Apartment Complexes located Seoul metropolitan area, The selected complexes are three midium-large size Apartment[nearby 35pyoug of floor area] and one complex of small size Apartment[below 25 pyoung of floor area] for comparison. The necessary data for the study were collected with visitation of each site. The study showed very positive result for the three medium-large size Apartment Complexes of which the average floor area is more than 25 pyoungs, while negative result for the Complex of which average floor area is less than 25 pyoungs. Other than floor size it was found that the electric consumption density also influence the economic feasibility. In study the unit fixed cost of the energy produced from Co-generation plant is one third of the unit variable cost[fuel cost] and it seems better to select high thermal efficiency machine for Co-generation plant even with some higher cost of the plant.

  • Research and development efforts to reduce $CO_2$ emission are in progress to cope with global warming. $CO_2$ emission from fossil fuel fired power plants is a major greenhouse gas source and the post-combustion $CO_2$ capture is considered as a short or medium term option to reduce $CO_2$ emissions. In this study, the application of the post-combustion $CO_2$ capture system, which is based on chemical absorption and stripping processes, to typical fossil fuel fired power plants was investigated. A coal fired plant and a natural gas fired combined cycle plant were selected. Performance of the MEA-based $CO_2$ capture system combined with power plants was analyzed and overall plant performance including the energy consumption of the $CO_2$ capture process was investigated.

  • Heliostat in the tower type solar thermal power plant is a mirror system tracking the sun's movement to collect the solar energy and it is the most important subsystem determining the efficiency of solar thermal power plant. Thus a good performance of it, which is mostly the accurate sun tracking performance under the various hazardous operating condition, is required. Heliostat control system is a system to manage the heliostat sun tracking movement and other operations. It also communicates with the master controller through the heliostat filed control system to receive and send the informations required to operate the heliostat as a part of the solar thermal power plant. This study presents a heliostat control system designed and developed for the 1MW solar thermal power plant. We first define the functionality of heliostat control system. Then sun tracking controller as well as the sun tracking algorithm satisfying the required functionality have been developed. We tested the developed heliostat control system and it showed a good performance in regulation of heliostat motion and communication.

  • The existing nuclear power plants have been often redesigned by increasing or decreasing electrical power without changing design concept by the request of utility, economic factors or other factors. When the cost of power plant equipment redesigned by changing reactor power and electrical power is estimated, if its quotation is not available in the market place, cost scaling factor(CSF) applies to the cost of existing plant equipment and then the new-designed equipment cost can be calculated. In this paper, we review CSFs according to plant capacity change cases in United State DOE, EPRI, ABB, SWEC and introduce the results applied to Korean PWR 1000MWe and 1400MWe.
