Building simulation is used in a variety of sectors. In its early years, building simulation was mainly used in the design phase of a building for basic functions. Recently, however, it has become increasingly important during the operating phase, for commissioning and facility management. Most building simulation tools are used to estimate the thermal environment and energy consumption performance, and hence, they require the inputting of hourly weather data. A building simulation used for prediction should take into account the use of standard weather data. Weather data, which is used as input for a building simulation, plays a crucial role in the prediction performance, and hence, the selection of appropriate weather data is considered highly important. The present study proposed a technique for generating real-time weather data files, as opposed to the standard weather data files, which are required for running the building simulation. The forecasted weather elements provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), the elements produced by the calculations, those utilizing the built-in functions of Energy Plus, and those that use standard values are combined for hourly input. The real-time weather data files generated using the technique proposed in the present study have been validated to compare with measured data and simulated data via EnergyPlus. The results of the present study are expected to increase the prediction accuracy of building control simulation results in the future.

Solar air heaters (SAHs) are simple in design and widely used for solar energy collection devices, and a packed bed is one of typical solar energy storage systems of thermal energy captured by SAHs. This paper presents mathematical modeling and simulation on the thermal performance of various packed bed energy storage systems. A MATLAB program is used to estimate the thermal efficiency of packed bed SAH. Among the various packed bed energy storage systems considered, the wire mesh screen packed bed SAH shows the best thermal efficiency over the entire range of design conditions. The maximum of thermal efficiency of packed bed SAH with wire mesh screen matrices has been found to be 0.794 for Re=2000 - 20000 and ${\Delta}T/I=0.002-0.02$.

In terms of the vehicle efficiency, a fuel cell hybrid system has advantages compared to a conventional internal combustion engine and a fuel cell alone-powered system. The efficiency of the fuel cell hybrid vehicle mainly depends on the maximum power of the fuel cell and therefore it is important to decide the design value of the fuel cell maximum power. In this paper, to estimate the performance of the fuel cell hybrid mini-bus in the design phase the simulator based on the models for the fuel cell stack, the electric battery, the fuel cell balance of plant, the controller, and the vehicle itself is proposed. Additionally, the hybrid mini-bus efficiencies with several different fuel cell powers are simulated for a city driving schedule and are compared on another. Consequently, the proposed simulation scheme is useful to determine the best design value of the fuel cell hybrid vehicles.
This paper discusses thermal and ventilation performance which might be caused by the adoption of one of specific building facade techniques, Double Skin System(DSS). One building with a prototypical DSS was selected and systematically investigated through field monitoring and computer simulation techniques. A network model of ventilation was successfully made using COMIS to evaluate ventilation performance of the system which can hardly be done by field measurements. Various operating conditions of air conditioning on/off and window opening were implemented in this type of building. Through the appropriate operation of the DSS in summer, simulation-based and experimental results implicate that it can lead to cooling energy savings.
In this paper, the electromagnetic damper (EMD), which is composed of a permanent-magnet rotary DC motor, a ball screw and a nut, is considered to be analyzed as a semi-active damper. The main objective pursued in the paper is to study the two degrees of freedom (DOF) model of the semi-active electromagnetic suspension system (SAEMSS) performance and energy regeneration controlled by on-off and continuous damping control strategies. The nonlinear equations of the SAEMSS must therefore be extracted. The effects of the EMD characteristics on ride comfort, handling performance and road holding for the passive electromagnetic suspension system (PEMSS) are first analyzed and damping control strategies effects on the SAEMSS performance and energy regeneration are investigated next. The results obtained from the simulation show that the SAEMSS provides better performance and more energy regeneration than the PEMSS. Moreover, the results reveal that the on-off hybrid control strategy leads to better performance in comparison with the continuous skyhook control strategy, however, the energy regeneration of the continuous skyhook control strategy is more than that of the on-off hybrid control strategy (except for on-off skyhook control strategy).
The purpose of this study is to present the simulation results and an overview of the performance assessment of a solar heating & cooling system by means of the $200m^2$ evacuated tube solar collector. The simulation was carried out using the thermal simulation code TRNSYS with new model of a single-effect LiBr/$H_{2}O$ absorption chiller developed by this study. The calculation was performed for yearly long-term thermal performance and for two design factors: the solar hot water storage tank and the cold water storage tank. As a result, it was anticipated that the yearly mean system efficiency is 46.7% and the solar fraction for the heating, cooling and hot water supply are about 84.4 %, 41.7% and 72.4%, respectively.

With the change in Earth's ecosystems due to climate change, a number of studies on zero energy buildings have been conducted globally, due to the depletion of energy and resources. However, most studies have concentrated on residential and office buildings and the performance predictions were made only in the design phase. This study verifies the zero-energy performance in the operational phase by acquiring and analyzing data after the completion of an exhibition building. This building was a retention building, in which a renewable energy system using a passive house building envelope, solar photovoltaic power generation panels, as well as fuel cells were adopted to minimize the maintenance cost for future energy-zero operations. In addition, the energy performance of the building was predicted through prior simulations, and this was compared with actual measured values to evaluate the energy performance of the actual operational records quantitatively. The energy independence rate during the measurement period of the target building was 123% and the carbon reduction due to the energy production on the site was 408.07 tons. The carbon reduction exceeded the carbon emission (331.5 tons), which verified the carbon zero and zero-energy performances.
A large portion of the energy cost of a building is cooling and heating to maintain a comfortable indoor environment. Air conditioning is now one of the important parts in the building design, as increase in energy consumption and pollutant emission in energy conversion process. In this study, elements that affects the energy consumption of model building are identified and the perfomance analysis of the alternative a Low Energy Cooling Systems considering characteristics of model building and energy saving performance is analyzed. In this study, elements that affect the energy consumption of office building are identified and energy saving performance of the alternative air conditioning system is analyzed. As a result, applied to earn and suggest basic data for energy saving measures. In this study, EnergyPlus simulation program was used to evaluate the energy load when alternative Low Energy Cooling Systems are applied to the model building. The reliability of simulation program is verified by comparing actual energy load from operation data of building management office and predicted energy load using simulation program. For Low Energy Cooling System application which considers the purpose and characteristics of the building, reasonable and energy-saving air conditioning method obtained by analyzing energy consumption elements for each expected air conditioning methods is used to deduct result of this study.
With the increased awareness of energy consumption as well as the environmental impact of building operations, architects, designers and planners are required to place more consideration on sustainability and energy performance of the building. To ensure most of those considerations are reflected in the building performance, critical design decisions should be made by key stakeholders early during the design development stage. The application of BIM during building energy simulations has profoundly improved the energy analysis process and thus this approach has gained momentum. However, despite rapid advances in BIM-based processes, the question still remains how ordinary building stakeholders can perform energy performance analysis, which has previously been conducted predominantly by professionals, to maximize energy efficient building performance. To address this issue, we identified two leading building performance analysis software programs, Energy Plus and IES (IES ), and compared their effectiveness and suitability as BIM-based energy simulation tools. To facilitate this study, we examined a case study on Building Performance Model (BPM) of a single story building with one door, multiple windows on each wall, a slab and a roof. We focused particularly on building energy performance by differing building orientation and window sizes and compared how effectively these two software programs analyzed the performance. We also looked at typical decision-making processes implementing building energy simulation program during the early design stages in the U.S. Finally, conclusions were drawn as to how to conduct BIM-based building energy performance evaluations more efficiently. Suggestions for further avenues of research are also made.

In this research TPS (Train Performance Simulation) blocks are designed using Simulink and applied to generate speed profiles for energy-efficient train operation. With a train operation mode of maximum powering, coasting, and maximum breaking, a breaking point is calculated from forward-backward running profiles. Then, GA (Genetic Algorithm) is used to solve a running time constraint, and a coasting point is produced from the searching process of GA. With the breaking point and the coasting point a speed profile is plotted. Train performance under a speed limit and gradient variations is simulated and resultant speed profiles are analyzed.
