In this paper, Annual flux variations in the Boseong Tall Tower (BTT) from 2016 to 2020 were analyzed using data from three levels (2.5 m, 60 m, and 300 m). BTT was installed in Boseong-gun, Jeollanam-do in February 2014 and continued to conduct energy exchange observations such as CO2, sensible heat, and latent heat using the eddy covariance method until March 2023. The BTT was located in a very flat and uniform paddy field, and flux observations were conducted at four levels: 2.5 m, 60 m, 140 m, and 300 m above ground. Surface energy balance was confirmed from observed data of net radiation flux, soil heat flux, sensible heat flux, and latent heat flux. Additionally, 2.5 m height surface fluxes, which are most influenced by agricultural land, were compared with data from Local Data Assimilation and Prediction System (LDAPS) of the Korea Meteorological Administration to evaluate the accuracy of LDAPS flux data. The correlation coefficient between LDAPS flux data and observed values was 0.95 or higher. Excluding summer latent heat flux data, there was a general tendency for LDAPS data to be higher than observed values. The footprint areas estimated below 60 m height mainly covered agricultural land, and flux observations at 2.5 m and 60 m heights showed typical agricultural characteristics. In contrast, the footprint estimated at 300 m height did not show agricultural characteristics, indicating that observations at this height encompassed a wide range, including mountains, sea, and roads. The analysis results of long-term flux observations can contribute to understanding the energy and carbon dioxide fluxes in agricultural fields. Furthermore, these results can be utilized as essential data for validating and improving numerical models related to such fluxes.
Radiation energy budget was analyzed using observation data from the Weather Information Service Engine (WISE) energy flux tower on the Seoul metropolitan area. Among observation data from the 13 energy flux towers, we used meteorological variables, radiation data (upward and downward short wave, upward and downward long wave, net short wave, net long wave and net radiation), albedo and emissivity for 15 months from July 2016 to September 2017. Although Gajwa (205) and Ttuksumm (216) sites located in urban, the albedo was relatively high due to the surround environment by glass wall buildings and the Han river around the sites. And Bucheon (209) site located in the suburb represented generally low emissivity. As a result, the albedo decreased and the emissivity increased in the city center. In the Seoul metropolitan area, the net radiation energy is $73.9W/m^2$ that the radiation budget of the surface is absorbed into the atmosphere. According to WISE observation data, it can be seen that observation at each sites are influenced by the surrounding environment.
The performances of the Seoul National University Urban Canopy Model (SNUUCM) under different meteorological conditions (clear, cloudy, and rainy conditions) in summertime are compared using observation dataset obtained at an urban site. The daily-averaged net radiation, sensible heat flux, and storage heat flux are largest in clear days and smallest in rainy days, but the daily-averaged latent heat flux is similar among clear, cloudy, and rainy days. That is, the ratio of latent heat flux to net radiation increases in order of clear, cloudy, and rainy conditions. In general, the performance of the SNUUCM is better in clear days than in cloudy or rainy days. However, the performance in simulating sensible heat flux in clear days is as poor as that in rainy days. For all the meteorological conditions, the performance in simulating latent heat flux is worst among the performances in simulating net radiation, sensible heat flux, and latent heat flux. The normalized mean error for latent heat flux is largest in rainy days in which the relative importance of latent heat flux in the surface energy balance becomes greatest among the three conditions. This study suggests that improvements to the parameterization of processes that are related to latent heat flux are particularly needed.
Heat energy exchange is very important processes in the coastal wetland ecosystems. We observed and analyzed the net radiation flux, the sensible heat flux, the latent heat flux and the soil heat flux, which are balanced in the heat energy balance, over a reclaimed land covered with reeds at Goheung, Jeonllanamdo where is horizontally plane. The atmospheric turbulence had been measured in order to estimate the heat transfer during 5 intensive observation periods (IOPs). It was considered that the soil consists of water, fine particles, and vegetation canopy that changes color and density according to the season. We examined the characteristics of the heat flux and the vegetation effect on the air temperature control. It was noted that the heat was transported mainly by latent heat flux in the summer season and the vegetation canopy decreased the daily temperature range due to the heat storage. The air temperature was lower at the IOPs site than near urban area. This showed that the coastal wetland covered with the vegetation control the thermal environment.
The Quantitative estimations of the stratification - destratification(SD) phenomena in Deukryang Bay, Korea have been carried out based on the data of wind speed, heat flux through the sea surface and tidal current amplitude. To find out the main factors causing SD, wv introduce the rate of energy balance of the surface heat flux, tidal and wind stirring proposed by Simpson and Hunter(1974). The calculated potential energy of three terms are compared, from which the energy of wind stirring effect was one order smaller than the heat flux and the tidal stirring. Using the results, we complement time integration of the potential energy with the several s values of 0.010~0.014 at interval 0.001 and with wind speeds of 1.5 and 2.0 times larger than observation values at land. It shows that the variation of SD phenomena in the bay mainly depended on tidal stirring and sea surface heating in summer if there is no exceptionally strong wind event like Typhoon. The stratification become to be foamed from about 5 July although the stratification a little decreases during the second spring tidal period of middle of July.
Understanding of the exchange between the water and energy which is happening between the surface and atmosphere is the basic of studying water resources. To study these, lots of researches using Noah Land Surface Model(LSM) are in progress. Noah LSM is based on energy and water balance equation and simulates various hydrological factors. There are diverse researches with Noah LSM are ongoing in overseas, on the other hand not enough study has been done. Especially there is almost no study using uncoupled Noah LSM in Korea. In this study we used data from Korea Flux Tower in Haenam(HFK) and Gwangneung(GDK) as forcing data to simulate the model and compared its result of net radiation, sensible heat flux and latent heat flux with the observation data to assess the applicability of Noah LSM in Korea. Regression coefficients of the comparison results of Noah LSM and observation show good agreement with the value of 0.83~0.99 at Haenam and 0.64~0.99 at Gwangneung which means Noah LSM can be trusted.
Geosynchronous electron flux dropouts are most likely due to fast drift loss of the particles to the magnetopause (or equivalently, the "magnetopause shadowing effect"). A possible effect related to the drift loss is the radial diffusion of PSD due to gradient of PSD set by the drift loss effect at an outer L region. This possibly implies that the drift loss can affect the flux levels even inside the trapping boundary. We recently investigated the details of such diffusion process by solving the diffusion equation with a set of initial and boundary conditions set by the drift loss. Motivated by the simulation work, we have examined observationally the energy spectrum and pitch angle distribution near trapping boundary during the geosynchronous flux dropouts. For this work, we have first identified a list of geosynchronous flux dropout events for 2007-2010 from GOES satellite electron measurements and solar wind pressures observed by ACE satellite. We have then used the electron data from the Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) spacecraft measurements to investigate the particle fluxes. The five THEMIS spacecraft sufficiently cover the inner magnetospheric regions near the equatorial plane and thus provide us with data of much higher spatial resolution. In this paper, we report the results of our investigations on the energy spectrum and pitch angle distribution near trapping boundary during the geosynchronous flux dropout events and discuss implications on the effects of the drift loss on the flux levels at inner L regions.
The outgoing longwave radiation (Rlu) for estimation of evapotranspiration is essential to understand energy balance of earth. However, the ground measurement based Rlu has a limitation that the observation can just stand for the exact site, not for an area. In this study, remote sensing technique is adopted to compensate the limitation of ground observation using the geostationary satellite. We calculated Rlu using Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS). We validated Rlu from COMS with Cheongmicheon (CFK) and Sulmacheon (SMK) flux tower observations controlled by Hydrological Survey Center. The results showed that Rlu from COMS represented reasonable correlation with ground based measurement. Based on the results in this study, COMS will be able to be used for estimation of evapotranspiration.
To seek an atmospheric heating mechanism operating on the Sun we investigated a heating source generated by a downflow, both of which may arise in a magnetic loop dynamically formed on the Sun via flux emergence. Since an observation shows that the illumination of evolving magnetic loops under the dynamic formation occurs sporadically and intermittently, we performed a magnetohydrodynamic simulation of flux emergence to obtain a high-cadence simulated data, where temperature enhancement was identified at the footpoint of an evolving magnetic loop. Unlike a rigid magnetic loop with a confined flow in it, the evolving loop in a low plasma β atmosphere is subjected to local compression by the magnetic field surrounding the loop, which drives a strong supersonic downflow generating an effective footpoint heating source in it. This may introduce an energy conversion system to the magnetized atmosphere of the Sun, in which the free magnetic energy causing the compression via Lorentz force is converted to the flow energy, and eventually reduced to the thermal energy. Dynamic and thermodynamic states involved in the system are explained.

Korean regional network of tower flux sites, KoFlux, has been initiated to better understand $CO_2$, water and energy exchange between ecosystems and the atmosphere, and to contribute to regional, continental, and global observation networks such as FLUXNET and CEOP. Due to heterogeneous surface characteristics, most of KoFlux towers are located in non-ideal sites. In order to quantify carbon and energy exchange and to scale them up from plot scales to a region scale, applications of various methods combining measurement and modeling are needed. In an attempt to infer regional-scale flux, four methods (i.e., tower flux, convective boundary layer (CBL) budget method, MM5 mesoscale model, and NCAR/NCEP reanalysis data) were employed to estimate sensible heat flux representing different surface areas. Our preliminary results showed that (1) sensible heat flux from the tower in Haenam farmland revealed heterogeneous surface characteristics of the site; (2) sensible heat flux from CBL method was sensitive to the estimation of advection; and (3) MM5 mesoscale model produced regional fluxes that were comparable to tower fluxes. In view of the spatial heterogeneity of the site and inherent differences in spatial scale between the methods, however, the spatial representativeness of tower flux need to be quantified based on footprint climatology, geographic information system, and the patch scale analysis of satellite images of the study site.
