Energy-resolved neutron imaging is an effective way to investigate the internal structure and residual stress of materials. Different sample sizes have varying requirements for the detector's imaging field of view (FOV) and spatial resolution. Therefore, a dual-mode energy-resolved neutron imaging detector was developed, which mainly consisted of a neutron scintillator screen, a mirror, imaging lenses, and a time-stamping optical fast camera. This detector could operate in a large FOV mode or a high spatial resolution mode. To evaluate the performance of the detector, the neutron wavelength spectra and the multiple spatial resolution tests were conducted at CSNS. The results demonstrated that the detector accurately measured the neutron wavelength spectra selected by a bandwidth chopper. The best spatial resolution was about 20 ㎛ in high spatial resolution mode after event reconstruction, and a FOV of 45.0 mm × 45.0 mm was obtained in large FOV mode. The feasibility was validated to change the spatial resolution and FOV by replacing the scintillator screen and adjusting the lens magnification.
Gadolinium oxysulfide (GOS) is regarded as a novel scintillator for the realization of ultra-high spatial resolution in neutron imaging. Monte Carlo simulations of GOS scintillator show that the capability of its spatial resolution is towards the micron level. Through the time-of-flight method, the light output of a GOS scintillator was measured to be 217 photons per captured neutron, ~100 times lower than that of a ZnS/LiF:Ag scintillator. A detector prototype has been developed to evaluate the imaging solution with the GOS scintillator by neutron beam tests. The measured spatial resolution is ~36 ㎛ (28 line pairs/mm) at the modulation transfer function (MTF) of 10%, mainly limited by the low experimental collimation ratio of the beamline. The weak light output of the GOS scintillator requires an enormous increase in the neutron flux to reduce the exposure time for practical applications.

Energy detection based spectrum sensing compares the energy of a received signal from a primary user with a detection threshold and decides whether it is active or not in the frequency band of interest. Here the detection threshold depends on not only a target false alarm probability but also the level of the noise energy in the band. So, if the noise energy changes, the detection threshold must be adjusted accordingly to maintain the given false alarm probability. Most previous works on energy detection for spectrum sensing are based on the assumption that noise energy is known a priori. In this paper, we present a new energy detection scheme updating its detection threshold under the assumption that the noise is white, and analyze its detection performance. Analytic results show that the proposed scheme can maintain a target false alarm rate without regard to the noise energy level and its spectrum sensing performance gets better as the time bandwidth product of the signal used to estimate the noise energy increases.

The development of radiation detection systems mainly consist of two parts-radiation detector fabrication including material development, and its appropriate electronics development. For the core-technology incubation of a radiation detection system, radiation fabrication and an evaluation facility are scheduled to be founded at the RFT (Radiation Fusion Technology) Center at KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) by 2015. This facility is utilized for the development and incubation of bottleneck-technologies to accelerate the industrialization of a radiation detection system in the industrial, medical, and radiation security fields. This facility is also utilized for researchers to develop next-generation radiation detection instruments. In this paper, the establishment of core-technology development is introduced and its technological mission is addressed.
In this paper, we propose the modified SED (Subband Energy Detection) which can assign weights adapting to the receiving signal level for the broadband energy detection in the passive SONARs. SED which is one of the broadband processing mainly employed by passive SONARs to detect a target is more robust against interference like multi signals or a clutter than CED (Conventional Energy Detection), but it degrades detection performance to assign weights independent of extracted extrema level of the receiving signal. Therefore, in this paper, the weighting method which can efficiently assigns rewards or penalties adapting to extracted extrema level of the receiving signal is proposed. In order to evaluate the performance of proposed method, we conducted experiments by using simulation and real ocean acoustic signal which is acquired from Yellow Sea. From the experiments, our proposed method has shown better performance than conventional SED.

The objective of this study is to improve the accuracy of damage detection using natural frequency and modal strain energy. The following approaches are used to achieve the goal. First, modal strain energy is introduced and newly GA-based damage detection technique using natural frequency and modal strain energy is proposed. Next, to verify efficiency of the proposed technique, damage scenarios for free-free beams are designed and the vibration modal tests as damage cases are conducted. Finally, feasibility of proposed technique is verified in comparison with a GA-based damage detection technique using natural frequency and mode shape.

In spectrum sensing, an energy detector compares the energy of a received signal with a predetermined detection threshold and decides whether a primary user is active or not in a licensed frequency band. Here the detection threshold is related to the noise power level in the band. Most previous works on energy detection have assumed that the noise power is exactly known a priori. However, this assumption does not hold in practice since there may be some uncertainty about the noise power. So it is necessary to investigate its effects on the performance of energy detection for spectrum sensing. In this paper, we analyze the effects using the residue theorem for contour integral and present the associated numerical results.

Commercially used organic scintillation materials (1,4 di[2-(5phenyloxazolyl)] benzene) have low solubility in solvents and a wide emission energy range, which causes a decrease in detection efficiency. In this study, an organic liquid scintillator with improved detection efficiency was developed using 7-Diethylamino-4-methylcoumarin material to compensate for the disadvantages of existing organic scintillation detectors. And to evaluate the applicability of radiation measurement, the performance of a commercial plastic detector was compared. As a result of analyzing the 60Co detection characteristics by applying 7-Diethylamino-4-methylcoumarin as an alternative to 1,4 di[2-(5phenyloxazolyl)] benzene, the detection efficiency was improved around 2% compared with commercial scintillator when the 7-Diethylamino-4-methylcoumarin content was 0.04 wt%. Based on the results of this study, the possibility of improving detection efficiency through scintillator material modification was confirmed. In addition, since it is possible to discriminate nuclide through the spectrum correction algorithm, it will be possible to inspect and classify various decommissioning wastes generated during the decommissioning process.

Spectrum sensing, as a fundamental functionality of Cognitive Radio (CR), enables Secondary Users (SUs) to monitor the spectrum and detect spectrum holes that could be used. Recently, the security issues of Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs) have attracted increasing research attention. As one of the attacks against CRNs, a Primary User Emulation (PUE) attack compromises the spectrum sensing of CR, where an attacker monopolizes the spectrum holes by impersonating the Primary User (PU) to prevent SUs from accessing the idle frequency bands. Energy detection is often used to sense the spectrum in CRNs, but the presence of PUE attack has not been considered. This study examined the effect of PUE attack on the performance of energy detection-based spectrum sensing technique. In the proposed protocol, the stationary helper nodes (HNs) are deployed in multiple stages and distributed over the coverage area of the PUs to deliver spectrum status information to the next stage of HNs and to SUs. On the other hand, the first stage of HNs is also responsible for inferring the existence of the PU based on the energy detection technique. In addition, this system provides the detection threshold under the constraints imposed on the probabilities of a miss detection and false alarm.
