  • The attenuation of waves transmitted through non-conservative joints that are shown in many paractical structures, is affected by the impedance and the orientation of the joint. In this paper, the joints between plate structures are assumed to be modeled as linear spring-dashpot systems and the transmission and reflection of vibration energy in the medium to high frequency ranges are investigated. The calculated power transmission and reflection coefficients are applied to the PFA method for the prediction of energy density and intensity in structures.

  • The transmission loss coefficient is very important acoustic property in parallel with absorption and acoustic impedance categorizing the acoustical materials, which can control the acoustical problems. At the same time, the transmission loss coefficient is a key parameter to choose the optimum material for the analysis of acoustical characteristics of material using SEA(Statistical Energy Analysis). • Energy scavenging is a technique that converts ambient energy, for example, vibration and light, to electrical energy in order to supply power to low power electronic devices such as ubiquitous sensors. In this paper, we propose an optimal operation condition of power delivery circuit and design strategy for energy scavenging system in which the generated power is order of microwatt and, consequently, efficient handling of power is critical. We also propose that high data transmission rate is more realistic optimal design objective rather than high energy efficiency. It is shown that disconnection of load from the storage capacitor right after data transmission reduces energy wasting and that optimal value of storage capacitor can be determined at this condition. The feasibility of our propose is proved by experiments and we believe that the proposed design strategy will promote the application of piezoelectric micropower generator to the ubiquitous sensor networks.

  • This paper presents a case study to investigate the monthly calculation method of ISO 13790 applied for a office building. The energy performance analysis according to improvement of insulation and air permeability of windows in K office buildings is investigated by means of building energy efficiency rating tool ($ECO_2-OD$). The K building energy system is tested experimently by the measurement of PMV(predicted mean vote) for the control of indoor thermal environment and heat transmission coefficient of windows and interior walls respectively, before and after the example K office building is remodeled passively. Therefore, Internet based energy assessment program of energy efficiency rating of office building can be applied as a program for the annual energy requirement and for evaluation of energy savings from the experimental and simulation results.

  • Energy harvesting has emerged as a powerful technology for complementing current battery-powered communication systems in order to extend their lifetime. In this paper a general framework is introduced for the optimization of communication systems in which the transmitter is able to harvest energy from its environment. Assuming that the energy arrival process is known non-causally at the transmitter, the structure of the optimal transmission scheme, which maximizes the amount of transmitted data by a given deadline, is identified. Our framework includes models with continuous energy arrival as well as battery constraints. A battery that suffers from energy leakage is studied further, and the optimal transmission scheme is characterized for a constant leakage rate.

  • X-MAC reduces transmission delay and energy consumption by using a short preamble instead of the existing long preamble. To solve the problem of X-MAC, this paper proposes a new MAC protocol called Express-MAC. The wireless sensor network is mainly used for the purpose of gathering event data or situation information. Especially, the transmission pattern of the sensor network with the purpose of event detection such as intrusion detection is very intermittent as well as successively occurring when a single event takes place in most cases. By reflecting sensor network's key transmission patterns as above, EX-MAC has used multi-hub path's path reservation system and awake section's transmission time reservation method in data transmission when the first event takes place. The awake time reservation in transmission path has improved successive data transmission's end-to-end delay, and it has also increased efficiency in terms of energy consumption by reducing the preamble length of data transmission and reception node.

  • Underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSN) need stable efficient data transmission methods because of environmental characteristics such as limited energy resource, limited communication bandwidth, variable propagation delay and so on. In this paper, we explain an enhanced hybrid transmission method that uses a hexagon tessellation with an ideal cell size in a two-dimensional underwater wireless sensor network model (2D) that consists of fixed position sensors on the bottom of the ocean. We also propose an energy efficient sensing and communication coverage method for effective data transmission in a three-dimensional underwater wireless sensor network model (3D) that equips anchored sensors on the bottom of the ocean. Our simulation results show that proposed methods are more energy efficient than the existing methods for each model.

  • Cluster based wireless sensor networks have a characteristic that the cluster heads collect and aggregate data from sensor nodes and send data to sink node. In addition, between the adjacent sensor nodes deployed in the same area is characterized to the similar sensing data. In this paper, we propose a transmission algorithm for improving the energy efficiency using these two features in the cluster-based wireless sensor networks. Adjacent neighboring nodes form a pair and the two nodes sense data on shifts for one round. Additionally, two cluster heads are selected in a cluster and one of them alternately collects data from nodes and transmits data to the sink. This paper describes a transmission rounding method and a transmission frame for increasing energy efficiency and compared with conventional methods. We perform computer simulations to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, and show better performance in terms of energy efficiency as compared with the LEACH algorithm.

  • This study proposes a new empirical model to effectively predict the excavation performance of a shield tunnel boring machine (TBM). The TBM performance is affected by the geological and geotechnical characteristics as well as the machine parameters of TBM. Field penetration index (FPI) is correlated with rock mass parameters to analyze the effective geotechnical parameters influencing the TBM performance. The result shows that RMR has a more dominant impact on the TBM performance than UCS and RQD. RMR also shows a significant relationship with the specific energy, which is defined as the energy required for excavating the unit volume of rock. Therefore, the specific energy can be used as an indicator of the mechanical efficiency of TBM. Based on these relationships with RMR, this study suggests an empirical performance prediction model to predict FPI, which can be derived from the correlation between the specific energy and RMR.
