The study concerning about the grid connection of the large-capacity energy storage system(ESS) is increasing. However, the transient study such as lightning or switching surge necessarily occurred at power system with ESS has been hardly performed. Therefore, this paper performs the analysis of lightning surge in distribution system with ESS using electromagnetic transient program(EMTP). The battery model in Matlab/Simulink is modeled by EMTP, which is the specialized software for power system transient study. Also, the bi-directional power electronics for interconnection of the battery and distribution system are modeled by EMTP. When the lightning is occurred at interconnection point of ESS, this paper simulates the existence of ESS and operation conditions of ESS and analyzes the surge in distribution system and ESS according to the various conditions.
The energy storage system consists of batteries, power conditioning system and energy management system. If ESS is installed and operated in the field, SAT(Site Acceptance Test) of ESS is being essentially required for the safety and performance of ESS. Furthermore, in order to more accurately and reliably validate the performance of the ESS in advanced countries, it has been required to perform not only performance testing by H/W equipments but also performance verification by S/W tool. Therefore, this paper proposes the modeling of portable test equipment in order to evaluate the performance and reliability of ESS by using the PSCAD/EMTDC S/W. And also, the prototype of 30[kW] scaled portable test equipments is implemented based on the S/W modeling. From the results of various simulations and testings such as power quality, LVRT and anti-islanding tests, it is confirmed that 30[kW] scaled portable test equipment is useful for SAT of ESS, because the simulation results of PSCAD/EMTDC are identical to them of 30[kW] test equipment at the same test conditions.
This paper proposes the hybrid UPS(Uninterruptible Power Supply) with ESS(Energy Storage System) function. The proposed hybrid UPS is operating in four states, which are normal state, battery state, ESS state, and bypass state. In case of peak load time or power shortage, the system is operating in ESS state in which the stored energy of the battery is used to manage the power effectively. The validity of proposed system are verified by simulations and experiments.
In recent years, ESS (Energy Storage System) has been widely used in various parts of a power system. Especially, due to its fast response time and high ramp rate, ESS is known to play an important role in regulating grid frequency and providing rotational inertia. As the number of installed and commercially operating ESSs increases, the reliability becomes an important issue. This paper introduces control schemes and presents its test method for grid-connected ESS for primary frequency regulation. The test method allows to verify the control operation in the individual operation mode and state. A validation of the method through actual ESS test in a electrical substation is presented in the case study section.
Due to the international environmental regulations and changes in policies, the demand for generators using the renewable energy is increasing. However, renewable energy generators with intermittent output characteristics such as solar and wind power generators, need the buffer facilities such as ESS during system operations. However, because of low price competitiveness in energy storage system, it is difficult to operate the renewable energy generator with ESS. Therefore, the government has recently proposed a policy to compensate the REC for renewable energy system with ESS. For all this, since the initial cost of the ESS is high, it is the most important to calculate and operate the optimal capacity of the ESS through an economic analysis. In this paper, we proposed the method of calculation the optimal capacity of ESS and analyzed economic feasibility of renewable energy system using the ESS according to depreciation in ESS price.
In this study, we propose an operations model to automate a home energy management system (HEMS) that utilizes an energy storage system (ESS) in consideration of consumer utility. Most previous studies focused on the system for the profits obtained from trading charged energy using large-scale ESS. By contrast, the present study focuses on constructing a home-level energy management system that considers consumer's utility over energy consumption. Depending on personal preference, some residential consumers may prefer consuming additional energy to earn increased profits through price arbitrage and vice versa. However, the current system could not yet reflect on this aspect. Thus, we develop an operations model for HEMS that could automatically control energy consumption while considering the level of consumer's preference and the economic benefits of using an ESS. The results of simulations using a dataset of the Korean market show that an operations policy of charging and discharging can be changed depending on consumer's utility. The impact of this policy is not ignorable. Moreover, the technical specifications of ESS, such as self-discharge rate and round-trip efficiency, can affect the operations policy and automation of HEMS.
Energy storage systems (ESS) can be used to provide frequency regulation services in a power system to replace traditional frequency regulation power plants. Battery ESS, in particular, can provide "fast-responding frequency regulation," wherein the facility can respond immediately and accurately to the frequency regulation signal sent by the system operator. This paper presents the development and the trial run results of a frequency regulation control system that uses large-scale ESS for use in a large power system. The control system was developed initially for the 4 MW ESS demonstration facility in Jocheon Jeju Island, and was further developed for use in the 28 MW ESS facility at the Seo-Anseong substation and the 24 MW ESS facility at the Shin-Yongin substation to provide frequency regulation services within mainland Korea. The ESS facility in Seo-Anseong substation responds to a sudden drop in frequency via governor-free control, while the ESS facility in Shin-Yongin responds via automatic generator control (AGC).
Recently, the mass production of Energy storage system (ESS) is actively perform around world. Energy storage system is a technique that stores power to energy storage device to supply energy into grid and load at peak-load. Therefore, the efficient energy management is available by using ESS system. The life of Lithium-ion battery is varied corresponding to the power usage, especially selected depth of discharge (DOD). The lifetime of battery is the one of the most issue of the ESS system because of its stability and reliability. Therefore, lifetime management of battery and power converter of ESS module is required. In this paper, the battery lifetime management method estimating residual power and lifetime of lithium ion battery of ESS system is proposed. Also, total avenue prediction of ESS system is simulated considering the total lifetime of battery.
To test the effectiveness of using an energy storage system for frequency regulation, the Energy New Business Laboratory at KEPCO Research Institute installed a 4 MW energy storage system (ESS) demonstration facility at the Jocheon Substation on Jeju Island. And after the successful completion of demonstration operations, a total of 52 MW ESS for frequency regulation was installed in Seo-Anseong (28 MW, governor-free control) and in Shin-Yongin (24 MW, automatic generation control). The control system used in these two sites was based on the control system developed for the 4 MW ESS demonstration facility. KEPCO recently finished the construction of 184 MW ESS for frequency regulation in 8 locations, (e.g. Shin-Gimjae substation, Shin-Gaeryong substation, etc.) and they are currently being tested for automatic operation. KEPCO plans to construct additional ESS facilities (up to a total of about 500 MW for frequency regulation by 2017), thus, various operational tests would first have to be conducted. The high-speed characteristic of ESS can negatively impact the power system in case the 500 MW ESS is not properly operated. At this stage we need to verify how effectively the 500 MW ESS can regulate frequency. In this paper, the effect of using ESS for frequency regulation on the power system of Korea was studied. Simulations were conducted to determine the effect of using a 524 MW ESS for frequency regulation. Models of the power grid and the ESS were developed to verify the performance of the operation system and its control system. When a high capacity power plant is tripped, a 24 MW ESS supplies power automatically and 4 units of 125MW ESS supply power manually. This study only focuses on transient state analysis. It was verified that 500 MW ESS can regulate system frequency faster and more effectively than conventional power plants. Also, it was verified that time-delayed high speed operations of multiple ESS facilities do not negatively impact power system operations. It is recommended that further testing be conducted for a fleet of multiple ESSs with different capacities distributed over multiple substations (e.g. 16, 24, 28, and 48 MW ESS distributed across 20 substations) because each ESS measures frequency individually. The operation of one ESS facility will differ from the other ESSs within the fleet, and may negatively impact the performance of the others. The following are also recommended: (a) studies wherein all ESSs should be operated in automatic mode; (b) studies on the improvement of individual ESS control; and (c) studies on the reapportionment of all ESS energies within the fleet.
The investment in solar and wind generation is rapidly increasing with government's renewable expansion policy and Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS). Since the large penetration of solar and wind generation increases the variability and uncertainty of supply and demand balance in power system, the government is pursuing the policy of supplying energy storage system (ESS) linked to renewable energy. ESS contributes to the ease of transmission and distribution grid by shifting PV generation from daytime to evening hours. Recently, the declining market price of REC as ESS incentive, policies to cut down incentives and limited ESS storage due to fire events lead to the aggravation of long-term profitability, thus working as a barrier of ESS spreading. In this study, the factors affecting the profit of ESS are analyzed and brief indicators are derived. Based on the indicators, the profit changes are analyzed considering the variation of REC market price and REC incentive weights. Based on the profit change with respect to the increase of ESS capacity, economical ESS installation capacity is suggested.
