  • This paper presents a design optimization for meridional profile and blade angle ${\theta}$ of a centrifugal compressor with DOE (design of experiments) and RSM (response surface method). Control points of the $3^{rd}$ order Bezier curve are used for design parameters and specific overall efficiency is used as object function. The response surface function shows good agreement with the 3D computational results. Three different optimized designs are proposed and compared with reference design at design point and off-design point. Contours of relative Mach number, static entropy, and total pressure are analyzed for improvement of performance by optimization. Off-design performance analysis is conducted by total pressure and efficiency.

  • The surface modification of microfibriled cellulose (MFC) was carried out through the hydrolysis-condensation reaction using (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APS) and 3-glycidyloxypropyltriethoxysilane (GPS) and then the modified cellulose was compounded with bio-degradable poly(lactic acid) (PLA). Also, pristine MFC was compounded with PLA as a control groups. The confirmation of surface modification for the pristine MFC was characterized by FT-IR and SEM/EDX. The thermal and mechanical properties of the PLA/MFC composites depended on the content of MFC and the type of silane coupling agents. From the thermal, morphological and mechanical behaviors of the PLA/MFC composites, it was found that GPS-MFC was more successful to improve the interface adhesion between PLA matrix and the surface of MFC than that of APS-MFC.

  • Drying process in the cylindrical thin film layer of sludge with the thickness less than a few millimeters has been investigated. Thin film drying is specially designed and used to dry the viscous materials like sewage sludge. The thin film layer of sludge is dried on the metallic cylindrical surface through which thermal energy is supplied to the layer during drying. The wall temperature is assumed to be constant during drying in the present study for the simplification. In order to solve the equations, the mass transfer rate on the drying surface should be determined. The mass flux of evaporated water vapor on the surface is estimated with the formulation given in the literature. The effect of some physical parameters on drying has been examined to figure out the drying characteristics of the sludge layer.

  • PCM has the ability to change their state, these materials absorb energy during the heating process as a body contact and release energy during a reverse cooling process as phase change take place. Using the thermal energy storage of PCM which has a melting point 15 to $35^{circ}C$ is one of the most effective ideas for utilization in textile finish. In this study, microencapsulated PCM(MCPCM) were synthesized by sol-gel method using the octadecane(or nonadecane) as PCM and the silica as microcapsule materials. To develop smart temperature adaptable textile, coating process was applied to textile substrate using a composition included MCPCM.

  • Volumetric capacity metrics at cryogenic condition are critical for technological and commercial development. It must be calculated and reported in a uniform and consistent manner to allow comparisons among different materials. In this paper, we propose a simple and universal protocol for the determination of volumetric capacity of sorbent materials at cryogenic condition. Usually, the sample container volume containing porous sample at RT can be directly determined by a helium expansion test. At cryogenic temperatures, however, this direct helium expansion test results in inaccurate values of the sample container volume for microporous materials due to a significant helium adsorption, resulting significant errors in hydrogen uptake. For reducing this container volume error, therefore, we introduced and applied the indirect method such as 'volume correction using a non-porous material', showing a reliable cold volume correction.

  • The initial crack often occurs on the bonded interface and it is the general cause of the interface fracture. It is very significant to establish the measurement method of interfacial crack by applying the ultrasonic technology into the interface of bonded dissimilar materials. In this paper, the interfacial crack length was measured by ultrasonic attenuation coefficient in the Al/Epoxy bonded dissimilar materials of double-cantilever beam(DCB). The energy release rate, G, was obtained by the experimental and Ripling's equation measurement of compliance. The experimental results represent that the relation between interfacial crack length for the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient and energy release rate is increased proportionally. From the experimental results, a measurement method of the interfacial crack length by the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient was proposed and discussed.

  • Ethylene glycol-based Cu nanofluids were prepared by pulsed wire evaporation (PWE) method. The structural properties of Cu nanoparticles were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The average diameter and Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) surface area of Cu nanoparticles were about 100 nm and $7.46\;m^2/g$, respectively. The thermal conductivity and viscosity of copper nanofluid were measured as functions of Cu concentration and temperature. As the volume fraction of Cu nanoparticles increased, both the enhanced ratios of thermal conductivity and viscosity of Cu nanofluids increased. As the temperature increased, the enhanced ratio of thermal conductivity increased, but that ratio of viscosity decreased.

  • An Ag/Ni bi-layer sheet was fabricated by the combination of powder metallurgy, diffusion bonding, cold rolling and texture annealing processes. After heat treating the cold rolled thin Ag/Ni bi-layer sheet at $900^{\circ}C$ for 4h, the excellent cube texture was developed on nickel surface. Qualitative chemical analysis using EPMA showed that inter diffusions of Ni and Ag in Ag/Ni bi-layer composite were negligible. It showed that Ag can be used as a chemical barrier for Ni and vice versa.

  • A Ni/Ag/Stainless steel 310S(SS310S) multi-layer sheet has been fabricated by a combination of vacuum brazing, cold rolling and texture annealing processes. After heat-treating the thin Ni/Ag/SS310S multi-layer sheet at $900^{\circ}C$ for 2h, development of (100)<001>cube texture on Ni surface was revealed by (111) pole figure. Quantitative chemical analysis was made by EPMA for the cross-section of the Ni/Ag/SS310S multi-layer sheet. EPMA results showed that Ag diffusion into the Ni layer, which may suppress the cube texture development, was negligible. A small amount of Cr atoms were detected in the Ni layer. It showed that Ag can be used as a chemical barrier of alloying element atoms in Ni layer for the Ni/Ag/SS310S multi-layer sheet and a strong cube texture was developed for the Ni layer in the Ni/Ag/SS310S multi-layer sheet.
