  • Using the two-dimensional Wulff plot, the equilibrium shape of a sapphire crystal was investigated as a function of surface energy anisotropy. Depending on the relative values of surface energy for various facet planes, the projected shape of equilibrium sapphire was determined to be rectangle, parallelogram, hexagon or octagon. The results are compared with the experimentally observed shapes of internal cavities of submicron range in sapphire single crystals.

  • Shallow fixed arches have a nonlinear primary equilibrium path with limit points and an unstable postbuckling equilibrium path, and they may also have bifurcation points at which equilibrium bifurcates from the nonlinear primary path to an unstable secondary equilibrium path. When a shallow fixed arch is subjected to a central step load, the load imparts kinetic energy to the arch and causes the arch to oscillate. When the load is sufficiently large, the oscillation of the arch may reach its unstable equilibrium path and the arch experiences an escaping-motion type of dynamic buckling. Nonlinear dynamic buckling of a two degree-of-freedom arch model is used to establish energy criteria for dynamic buckling of the conservative systems that have unstable primary and/or secondary equilibrium paths and then the energy criteria are applied to the dynamic buckling analysis of shallow fixed arches. The energy approach allows the dynamic buckling load to be determined without needing to solve the equations of motion.

  • We have calculated the energy of three distinct grain configurations, namely completely connected, partially connected and unconnected configurations, evolving during a spheroidization of polycrystalline thin film by extending a geometrical model due to Miller et al. to the case of spheroidization at both the surface and film-substrate interface. "Stabilitl" diagram defining a stable region of each grain configuration has been established in terms of the ratio of grain size to film thickness vs. equilibrium wetting or dihedral angles at various interface energy conditions. The occurrence of spheroidization at the film-substrate interface significantly enlarges the stable region of unconnected grain configuration thereby greatly facilitating the occurrence of agglomeration. Complete separation of grain boundary is increasingly difficult with a reduction of equilibrium wetting angle. The condition for the occurrence of agglomeration differs depending on the equilibrium wetting or dihedral angles. The agglomeration occurs, at low equilibrium angles, via partially connected configuration containing stable holes centered at grain boundary vertices, whereas it occurs directly via completely connected configuration at large equilibrium angles except for the case having small surface and/or film-substrate interface energy. The initiation condition of agglomeration is defined by the equilibrium boundary condition between the partially connected and unconnected configurations for the former case, whereas it can, for the latter case, largely deviate from the equilibrium boundary condition between the completely connected and unconnected configurations because of the presence of a finite energy barrier to overcome to reach the unconnected grain configuration.

  • The neutron induced nuclear cross section data for Ir-191 and Ir-193 were calculated and evaluated from unresolved resonance energy to 20MeV. The energy-dependent optical model potential parameters were determined based on the experimental data and applied up to 20MeV. A spherical optical model, a statistical model in an equilibrium energy region, and a multistep direct and multistep compound model in a pre-equilibrium energy region were used in the calculations. The direct capture model enhanced the fast neutron capture in the pre-equilibrium energy. The theoretically calculated cross sections were compared with the experimental data and the evaluated files. The calculations were found to be in good agreement with the experiment data. The evaluated cross section results were compiled with the ENDF-6 format. The fast energy results will be merged with the resonance parts to create a full evaluation library. The improvement of the neutron-induced cross section data will contribute to an increase in the efficiency of the production of Ir-192 as a radiation source.

  • Three methods of nozzle flow analysis, frozen-equilibrium, shifting-equilibrium and non-equilibrium approaches, were used to rocket nozzle flow, those were coupled with the methods of computational fluid dynamics code. For a design of high temperature rocket nozzle, chemical equilibrium analysis which shares the same numerical characteristics with frozen flow analysis can be an efficient design tool for predicting maximum thermodynamic performance of the nozzle. Frozen fluid analysis presents the minimum performance of the nozzle because of no consideration for the energy recovery. On the other hand, the case of chemical-equilibrium analysis is able to forecast the maximum performance of the nozzle due to consideration for the energy recovery that is produced for the fast reaction velocity compared with velocity of moving fluid. In this study, using the chemical equilibrium flow analysis code that is combined the modified frozen-equilibrium and the chemical-equilibrium. In order to understand the thermochemical characteristic components and the accompanying energy recovery, shifting-equilibrium flow analysis was carried out for the 30 $ton_f$-class KARI liquid rocket engine nozzle together with frozen flow. The performance evaluation based on the 30 $ton_f$-class KARI LRE nozzle flow analyses will provide an understanding of the thermochemical process in the nozzle and performances of nozzle.

  • The liquid solar air conditioning system is introduced as an alternative solution to control air condition and to save electrical energy consumption. The heat and mass transfer performances of dehumidifier/regenerator in liquid solar air conditioning system are influenced by air and desiccant condition. The application of this system, the thermal energy from the sun and inlet air are unable to control, but operation parameter of other components such as pump, fan and sensible cooling unit are able to control. The equilibrium point of heat and mass transfer are the liquid desiccant and inlet air conditions, where, the heat and mass are not transferred between the liquid desiccant and vapor air. By knowing equilibrium point of heat and mass transfer, the suitable optimal desiccant conditions for certain air condition are funded. This present experiment study is investigated the equilibrium point heat and mass transfer in various air and desiccant temperature. The benefit of equilibrium point heat and mass transfer will be helpful in choose and design proper component to optimize electrical energy consumption.

  • It is difficult to analytically derive the relationship among volumetric displacement, flowrate, torque, and rotation speed regarding an instantaneous position of gerotor hydraulic pumps/motors. This can be explained by the geometric shape of the rotors, which is highly complicated. Herein, an analytical method for the instantaneous torque, rotation speed, flowrate, and volumetric displacement of a pump/motor is proposed. The method is based on two physical concepts: energy conservation and torque equilibrium. The instantaneous torque of a pump/motor shaft is determined for the posture of rotors from the torque equilibrium. If the torque equilibrium is combined with the energy conservation between the hydraulic energy of the pump/motor and the mechanical input/output energy, the formula for determining the instantaneous volumetric displacement and flowrate is derived. The numerical values of the instantaneous volumetric displacement, torque, rotation speed, and flowrate are calculated via the MATLAB software programs, and they are illustrated for the case in which inner and outer rotors rotate with respect to fixed axes. The degrees of torque fluctuation, speed fluctuation, and flowrate fluctuation can be observed from their instantaneous values. The proposed formula may provide a better understanding of the design or analysis process of gerotor pumps/motors.

  • Gas hydrate is a special kind of inclusion compound that can be formed by capturing gas molecules to water lattice in high pressure and low temperature conditions. When referred to standard conditions, $1m^3$ solid hydrates contain up to $172Nm^3$ of methane gas, depending on the pressure and temperature of production. Such large volumes make natural gas hydrates can be used to store and transport natural gas. In this study, three-phase equilibrium conditions for forming methane hydrate were theoretically obtained in aqueous single electrolyte solution containing 3wt% NaCl. The results show that the predictions match the previous experimental values very well, and it was found that NaCl acts as an inhibitor.
