This study applied upgrades to the processes of a 10 MW wet amine $CO_2$ capture pilot plant and conducted performance evaluation. The 10 MW $CO_2$ Capture Pilot Plant is a facility that applies 1/50 of the combustion flue gas produced from a 500 MW coal-fired power plant, and is capable of capturing up to 200 tons of $CO_2$. This study aimed to quantitatively measure efficiency improvements of post-combustion $CO_2$ capture facilities resulting from process upgrades to propose reliable data for the first time in Korea. The key components of the process upgrades involve absorber intercooling, lean/rich amine exchanger efficiency improvements, reboiler steam TVR (Thermal Vapor Recompression), and lean amine MVR (Mechanical Vapor Recompression). The components were sequentially applied to test the energy reduction effect of each component. In addition, the performance evaluation was conducted with the absorber $CO_2$ removal efficiency maintained at the performance evaluation standard value proposed by the IEA-GHG ($CO_2$ removal rate: 90%). The absorbent used in the study was the highly efficient KoSol-5 that was developed by KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation). From the performance evaluation results, it was found that the steam consumption (regeneration energy) for the regeneration of the absorbent decreased by $0.38GJ/tonCO_2$ after applying the process upgrades: from $2.93GJ/ton\;CO_2$ to $2.55GJ/tonCO_2$. This study confirmed the excellent performance of the post-combustion wet $CO_2$ capture process developed by KEPCO Research Institute (KEPRI) within KEPCO, and the process upgrades validated in this study are expected to substantially reduce $CO_2$ capture costs when applied in demonstration $CO_2$ capture plants.
The neutron induced nuclear data for Eu-153, Gd-155 and Cd-157 are calculated and evaluated in the high energy region. The evaluation procedure for deformed nuclei is setup by using Ecis-Empire codes. The energy dependent optical model potential parameters are searched based on the recent experimental data and applied up to 20 MeV. Optical model, full featured Hauser-Feshbach model and multistep direct and multistep compound model are used in the calculation. The direct-semidirect capture model and the direct coupled-channels contribution to discrete levels are introduced to improve the capture and inelastic scattering cross sections. The theoretically calculated cross sections are compared with the experimental data and the evaluated files. The model-calculated total and capture cross sections are in good agreement with the reference experimental data. The evaluated cross section results are compiled to ENDF-6 format and are expected to improve the ENDF/B-Vl.
For mechanical load testing of wind turbines, capture matrix is constructed for various range of wind speeds according to the international standard IEC 61400-13. The conventional method wastes considerable amount of data by its invalid data policy -segment data into 10 minutes then remove invalid ones. Previously, we have suggested an alternative way to save the total amount of data to build a capture matrix, but the efficient selection of data has been still under question. The paper introduces optimization algorithms to construct capture matrix with less data. Heuristic algorithm (simple stacking and lowest frequency first), population method (particle swarm optimization) and Q-Learning accompanied with epsilon-greedy exploration are compared. All algorithms show better performance than the conventional way, where the distribution of enhancement was quite diverse. Among the algorithms, the best performance was achieved by heuristic method (lowest frequency first), and similarly by particle swarm optimization: Approximately 28% of data reduction in average and more than 40% in maximum. On the other hand, unexpectedly, the worst performance was achieved by Q-Learning, which was a promising candidate at the beginning. This study is helpful for not only wind turbine evaluation particularly the viewpoint of cost, but also understanding nature of wind speed data.
How effectively a wind farm captures high market prices can greatly influence a wind farm's viability. This research identifies and creates an understanding of the effects that result in various capture prices (average revenue earned per unit of generation) that can be seen among different wind farms, in the current and future competitive SMP (System Marginal Price) market in South Korea. Through the use of a neural network to simulate changes in SMP caused by increased renewables, based on the Korea Institute of Energy Research's extensive wind resource database for South Korea, the variances in current and future capture prices are modelled and analyzed for both onshore and offshore wind power generation. Simulation results shows a spread in capture price of 5.5% for the year 2035 that depends on both a locations wind characteristics and the generations' correlation with other wind power generation. Wind characteristics include the generations' correlation with SMP price, diurnal profile shape, and capacity factor. The wind revenue cannibalization effect reduces the capture price obtained by wind power generation that is located close to a substantial amount of other wind power generation. In onshore locations wind characteristics can differ significantly/ Hence it is recommended that possible wind development sites have suitable diurnal profiles that effectively capture high SMP prices. Also, as increasing wind power capacity becomes installed in South Korea, it is recommended that wind power generation be located in regions far from the expected wind power generation 'hotspots' in the future. Hence, a suitable site along the east mountain ridges of South Korea is predicted to be extremely effective in attaining high SMP capture prices. Attention to these factors will increase the revenues obtained by wind power generation in a competitive electricity market.
Prompt gamma ray from the natural Indium sample was measured by using an assembly of BGO($Bi_4Ge_3O_{12}$) scintillation detectors in the neutron energy region from 1 to 300 eV. The assembly was composed of pieces of BGO. The spectrometer was composed geometrically as total energy absorption detector. 46-MeV electron linear accelerator which is located at Research Reactor Institute, Kyoto University used for neutron sources from photonuclear reaction. The measurement of the neutron capture resonances was performed to below neutron energy 1 keV, because of strong X-ray effect from photonuclear reaction in Ta target and short distance from the target to an assembly of detector. The distance of neutron flight path is $12.7{\pm}0.02m$. The large neutron capture resonances were measured from 1 to 400 eV. The energy in the capture resonance was compared with the evaluated values. The large resonances were seen in the present measurement. General agreement can be seen between the present measurement and the previous evaluated data in relevant energy region. In the present study, we measured the continues resonance structure above 1 keV neutron energy region. 91.49 eV new neutron capture resonance was found in present measurement.

Performance of absorbent for post-combustion $CO_2$ capture was measured and discussed. Fully saturated fresh absorbent (P2-15F) and absorbents sampled from absorption and regeneration reactor of continuous $CO_2$ capture process, P2-15A, P2-15R, respectively, were used as representative absorbents. Small scale fluidized bed reactor (0.05 m I.D., 0.8 m high) which can measure exhaust gas concentration and weight change simultaneously was used to analyze regeneration characteristics for those absorbents. Exhausted moles of $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ were measured with increasing temperature. $H_2O/CO$ ratio and working capacity were determined and discussed to confirm reason of reactivity decay after continuous operation. Moreover, possibility of side reaction was checked based on the $H_2O/CO_2$ mole ratio. Finally, suitable regeneration temperature range was confirmed based on the trend of working capacity with temperature.
The hydraulic power-take-off mechanism (HPTO) is one of the most popular methods in wave energy converters (WECs). However, the conventional HPTO with only one direction motion has a number of drawbacks that limit its power capture capability. This paper proposes an adjustable moving angle wave energy converter (AMAWEC) and investigates the effect of the moving angle on the performance of the wave energy converter to find the optimal moving angle in order to increase the power capture capability as well as energy efficiency. A mathematical model of components from a floating buoy to a hydraulic motor was modeled. A small scale WEC test rig was fabricated to verify the power capture capability and efficiency of the proposed system through experiments.

Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation can severely weaken the accuracy of ranging and localization in wireless location systems. NLOS bias mitigation techniques have recently been proposed to relieve the NLOS effects, but positively rely on the capability to accurately distinguish between LOS and NLOS propagation scenarios. This paper proposes an energy-capture-based NLOS identification method for LDR-UWB systems, based on the analysis of the characteristics of the channel impulse response (CIR). With this proposed energy capture method, the probability of successfully identifying NLOS is much improved than the existing methods, such as the kurtosis method, the strongest path compare method, etc. This NLOS identification method can be employed in adaptive modulation scheme to decrease bit error ratio (BER) level for certain signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The BER performance with the adaptive modulation can be significantly enhanced by selecting proper modulation method with the knowledge of channel information from the proposed NLOS identification method.
In recent years, the usage of fossil fuels has caused problems of climate change and global warming. Because the combustion of fossil fuels is related to the production of greenhouse gases ($CO_2$, $CH_4$, etc.), new technology in the field of combustion is needed in order to handle the crisis of climate change and the global warming. As one of the efforts to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, the concept of regenerative oxy-fuel combustion for energy efficiency and carbon capture was suggested, In the current study, the development of an industrial regenerative oxy-fuel combustion furnace was introduced, which has been being performed at Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER).

Gadolinium neutron capture therapy (Gd-NCT) is a precision radiation therapy that kills cancer cells using the neutron capture reaction that occurs when 157Gd hits thermal neutrons. 157Gd has the highest thermal neutron capture cross section of 254,000 barns among stable isotopes in the periodic table. Another stable isotope, 155Gd, also has a high thermal neutron trapping area (~ 60,700 barns), so gadolinium that exists in nature can be used as a Gd-NCT drug. Gd-NCT is a mixed kinetic energy of low-energy and high-energy ionizing particles, which can be uniformly distributed throughout the tumor tissue, thereby solving the disadvantage of heterogeneous dose distribution in tumor tissue. The Gd complexes of small-sized molecule are widely used as contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in clinical practice. Therefore, these compounds can be used not only for diagnosis but also therapy when considering the concept of Gd-NCT. This multifunctional trial can look forward to new medical advance into NCT clinical practices. In this review, we introduce gadolinium compounds suitable for Gd-NCT and describe the necessity of image guided Gd-NCT.
