  • We have utilized neural network (NN) studies to predict impact sensitivities of various types of explosive molecules. Two hundreds and thirty four explosive molecules have been taken from a single database, and thirty nine molecular descriptors were computed for each explosive molecule. Optimization of NN architecture has been carried out by examining seven different sets of molecular descriptors and varying the number of hidden neurons. For the optimized NN architecture, we have utilized 17 molecular descriptors which were composed of compositional and topological descriptors in an input layer, and 2 hidden neurons in a hidden layer.

  • Covalent functionalization of a $Zn_{12}O_{12}$ nano-cage with $CO_2$ molecule in terms of energetic, geometry, and electronic properties was investigated by density functional theory method. For chemisorption configurations, the adsorption energy of $CO_2$ on the $Zn_{12}O_{12}$ nano-cage for the first $CO_2$ was calculated -1.25 eV with a charge transfer of 1.00|e| from the nano-cage to the $CO_2$ molecule. The results show that $CO_2$ molecule was significantly detected by pristine $Zn_{12}O_{12}$ nano-cage, therefore the nano-cage can be used as $CO_2$ storage. Also, more efficient binding could not be achieved by increasing the $CO_2$ concentration. For Physisorption configurations, HOMO-LUMO gap of the configurations has not changed, while slight changes have been observed in the chemisorption configurations.

  • We present the results of molecular dynamics simulations for three different systems of bilayers of long-chain alkyl thiol [S(CH2)15CH3] molecules on an solid-solid interface using the extended collapsed atom model for the chain-molecule. It is found that there exist two possible transitions: a continuous transition characterized by a change in molecular interaction between sites of different chain molecules with increasing area per molecule and a sudden transition from an ordered lattice-like state to a liquid-like state due to the lack of interactions between sites of chain molecules on different surfaces with increasing distance between two solid surfaces. The third system displays a smooth change in probability distribution characterized by the increment of gauche structure in the near-tail part of the chain with increasing area per molecule. The analyses of energetic results and chain conformation results demonstrate the characteristic change of chain structure of each system.

  • Molecular structures and chemical properties of 1-aminoimidazole derivatives have been investigated at high levels of density functional theories. Heat of formation, density, explosive performances and impact sensitivities have been estimated at the global minimum of potential energy surface. As more nitro groups are introduced, the explosive performances of 1-aminoimidazole derivatives are enhanced, while the impact sensitivity becomes more sensitive. A two-dimensional plot between explosive performance and impact sensitivity has been utilized to comprehend the technical status of new explosive candidates. Based on locations in the two-dimensional plot, 1-aminodinitroimidzole isomers appears to have a potential to be good candidates for insensitive explosives, and 1-aminotrinitroimidazole may become a powerful explosive molecule whose behavior is quite close to HMX.

  • The nitramine explosives with $-NH_2$ and -F groups were optimized to obtain their molecular geometries and electronic structures at DFT-B3LYP/6-31+G(d) level. The theoretical molecular density (${\rho}$), heat of formation (HOF), detonation velocity ($D$) and detonation pressure ($P$), estimated using Kamlet-Jacobs equations, showed that the detonation properties of these compounds were excellent. Based on the frequencies scaled by 0.96 and the principle of statistic thermodynamics, the thermodynamic properties were evaluated, which were respectively related with the temperature. The simulation results reveal that 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocan-2-amine (molecule B1) performs similarly to the famous explosive HMX, and 2-fluoro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazinane (molecule C1) and 2-fluoro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane (molecule D1) outperform HMX. According to the quantitative standard of energetics and stability as an HEDC (high energy density compound), molecules C1 and D1 essentially satisfy this requirement. These results provide basic information for molecular design of novel high energetic density compounds.

  • Two new high-nitrogen energetic compounds $ZTO{\cdot}2H_2O$ and $ZTO(phen){\cdot}H_2O$ have been synthesized (where ZTO = 4,4-azo-1,2,4-triazol-5-one and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline). The crystal structure, elemental analysis and IR spectroscopy are presented. Compound 1 $ZTO{\cdot}2H_2O$ crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system with space group Pnna and compound 2 $ZTO(phen){\cdot}H_2O$ in the triclinic crystal system with space group P-1. In $ZTO(phen){\cdot}H_2O$, there is intermolecular hydrogen bonds between the -NH group of ZTO molecule (as donor) and N atom of phen molecule (as acceptor). Thermal decomposition process is studied by applying the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermo thermogravimetric differential analysis (TG-DTG). The DSC curve shows that there is one exothermic peak in $ZTO{\cdot}2H_2O$ and $ZTO(phen){\cdot}H_2O$, respectively. The critical temperature of thermal explosion ($T_b$) for $ZTO{\cdot}2H_2O$ and $ZTO(phen){\cdot}H_2O$ is $282.21^{\circ}C$ and $195.94^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • The molecular structures of 2,6-diaza-1,3,5,7-tetraoxaspiro[3,3]heptane (1) and its dinitro derivative, 2,6-dinitro-2,6-diaza-1,3,5,7-tetraoxaspiro[3,3]heptane (2), were fully optimized without symmetry constraints at $HF/6-31G^*$ level of theory. A bisected conformation with respect to the ring is preferred with a $C_2$ symmetric structure. The density of each molecule in the crystalline state was estimated to 1.12 and 2.36 $g/cm^3$ using PM3/VSTO-3G calculations from the molecular volume. The heat of formation was calculated for two compounds at the CBS-4M level of theory. The detonation parameters were computed using the EXPLO5 software: D = 6282 m/s, $P_{C-J}$ = 127 kbar for compound 1, D = 7871 m/s, $P_{C-J}$ = 307 kbar for compound 2, and D = 6975 m/s, $P_{C-J}$ = 170 kbar for 60% compound 2 with 40% TNT. Specific impulse of compound 1 in aluminized formulation when used as monopropellants was very similar to that of the conventional ammonium perchlorate in the same formulation of aluminum.

  • Covalent functionalization of a $B_{12}N_{12}$ nano-cage with $CO_2$ molecule has been investigated using density functional theory in terms of energetic, geometric, and electronic property analyses. Results show that besides two physisorption configurations, $CO_2$ preferably tends to perform [2+2] addition on B-N bonds of the cluster which are shared between six-membered and four-membered rings, releasing energy of 14.99 kcal/mol for adsorption of the first $CO_2$ and of 15.45 kcal/mol for the second one (per each molecule). On the basis of calculated density of states, we have found that the electronic properties of the physisorbed $B_{12}N_{12}$ by $CO_2$ have not changed, while slight changes have been predicted in the functionalized cases. Present results might be helpful to provide an effective way to modify the $B_{12}N_{12}$ properties for further purifications and applications.

  • Through quantum chemical means, we inspect the energetics of the singlet oxygen formation with fluorescent proteins in their triplet excited states. By placing an oxygen molecule at varying distances, we discover that the energetic driving force for the singlet oxygen formation does not depend strongly on the chromophore $-O_2$ distance. We also observe that the chromophore vibrations contribute much to the energy gap modulation toward the surface crossing. Based on our computational results, we try to draw a series of rationalizations of different photostabilities of different fluorescent proteins. Most prominently, we argue that the chance of encountering a surface crossing point is higher with a protein with a lower photostability.

  • Ab initio and density functional theory methods have been employed to study all theoretically possible conformers of fluoroacetic acid. Molecular geometries and energetic of cis and trans monomers and cis dimers in gaseous phase have been obtained using HF, B3LYP and MP2 levels of theory, implementing 6-311++G(d,p) basis set. It was found that cis rotamers are more stable. In addition, it was found that in comparison with acetic acid the strength of hydrogen bonding in fluoroacetic acid decreased. The infrared spectrum frequencies and the vibrational frequency shifts are reported. Natural population and atom in molecule analysis performed to predict electrostatic interactions in the cyclic H-bonded complexes and charges. The proton transfer reaction is studied and activation energy is compared with acetic acid proton transfer reaction.
