Improvement of Heat of Reaction of Jet Fuel Using Pore Structure Controlled Zeolite Catalyst (제올라이트계 촉매의 기공구조 조절을 통한 항공유의 흡열량 향상 연구)

  • In hypersonic aircraft, increase of aerodynamic heat and engine heat leads heat loads in airframe. It could lead structural change of aircraft's component and malfunctioning. Endothermic fuels are liquid hydrocarbon fuels which are able to absorb the heat load by undergoing endothermic reactions. In this study, exo-tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene was selected as a model endothermic fuel and experiments on endothermic properties were investigated with pore structure controlled zeolite catalyst using metal deposition. We secured the catalyst that had better endothermic performance than commercial catalyst. The object of this study is inspect catalyst properties which have effect on heat absorption improvement. Synthetic catalyst could be applied to system that use exo-THDCP as endothermic fuel instead of other commercial catalyst.

In this study, exo-tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene was selected as a model endothermic fuel and experiments were investigated in endothermic fuel cooling system with zeolite catalyst. Three shapes of catalysts have been manufactured and endothermic characteristics were recovered. Bineded catalyst showed higher heat absorption and conversion than other two zeolite catalysts. In product distribution, binded catalyst showed higher aromatics composition.

  • In a hypersonic vehicle to solve the heat problem generated during flight, a cooling technology is being developed which uses the endothermic effect that appears during the decomposition reaction of the mounted fuel. In this study, the decomposition reaction of n-dodecane fuel was performed using HZSM-5 as a catalyst, and the catalyst was coated on metal foam to maximize the endothermic effect of the catalytic decomposition reaction and suppress coke formation. The reactor was a stainless steel flow reactor with a outer diameter of 1.27 cm, and the reaction temperature was 550 ℃, the reaction pressure was 4 MPa, and the flow rate was 12 ml per minute. As a result of the catalytic decomposition reaction using a catalyst coated with HZSM-5 on the metal foam, the heat sink was 2887 kJ/kg as a maximum, the gas phase conversion rate was 34%, and the amount of coke produced on the metal foam decreased by about 56% as the catalyst was coated compared to the uncoated catalyst.

The heat loads could lead structural change of aircraft's component and malfunctioning. Endothermic fuels are liquid hydrocarbon fuels which are able to absorb the heat loads by undergoing endothermic reactions, such as thermal and catalytic cracking. In this study, methylcyclohexane was selected as a model endothermic fuel and experiments on endothermic properties were implemented. To improve heat of endothermic reaction, we applied zeolites and confirmed that HZSM-5 was the best catalyst for the catalytic performance. The objective is to investigate catalytic effects for heat sink improvement. The catalyst could be applied to system that use kerosene fuel as endothermic fuel.

A Study on the Optimization of Ni-ZSM-5 Endothermic Catalyst Preparation for Decomposition of n-Dodecane (n-dodecane 분해를 위한 Ni-ZSM-5 흡열촉매 제조 최적화 연구)

  • In order to solve problems caused by the heat load of hypersonic aircraft, this study examined the optimization of the Si/Al ratio of the catalyst and nickel ion exchange to improve the performance of the hydrocarbon decomposition reaction (endothermic reaction). It was confirmed that the catalysts prepared through Si/Al ratio optimization and nickel ion exchange showed about 10% improvement in heat absorption performance compared to thermal cracking at 4 MPa and 550 ℃. FT-IR and NH3-TPD analyses were found to identify factors affecting activity changes, and it was observed that the Si/Al ratio of the HZSM-5 catalyst was closely correlated with acid site development and catalytic activity. In addition, TGA and O2-TPO analyses were conducted to observe the carbon deposition inhibition properties of the nickel-added catalyst.

  • As hypersonic flight speeds and engines efficiencies increase, heat loads on an aircraft and it's engine increase. Because the temperature of the air flow is too high to cool the aircraft structure at hypersonic flight speeds, it is essential to use the aircraft fuel as the primary coolant. Endothermic fuels are liquid hydrocarbon aircraft fuels which are able to absorb the heat loads by undergoing endothermic reactions, such as thermal and catalytic cracking. The endothermic reactions are improved by catalysts which change the extent of reaction and product distribution. At high temperature, liquid hydrocarbons would lead to coke formation that can reduce the effectiveness of heat exchanger and cause rapid degradation of the catalyst, thus endothermic capacity of endothermic fuels is limited to the temperature at which coke doesn't form. In this study, the essential cooling technologies by applying endothermic fuels and the properties of the endothermic fuels are described.

  • This study was carried out to investigate fuel decomposition characteristics and coke formation according to types of endothermic fuels and methods of catalyst molding. Methylcyclohexane (MCH), n-dodecane, and exo-tetrahydrodipentadiene (exo-THDCP) were used as the endothermic fuels. As a catalyst, USY720 supported with platinum was used. It was manufactured by only using pressure to disk-type, or pelletized with a binder and a silica solution. The characteristics of the catalysts according to the molding method were analyzed by X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm, and ammonia temperature programmed desorption analysis. The reaction was carried out under conditions of high temperature and high pressure ($500^{\circ}C$, 50 bar) in which the fuel could exist in a supercritical state. The product was analyzed by gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer and the coke produced by the catalyst was analyzed by thermogravimetric analyzer. After the reaction, the composition of the products varied greatly depending on the structure of the fuel. In addition, the crystallinity and surface properties of the catalysts were not changed by the method of catalyst molding, but the changes of the acid sites and the pore characteristics were observed, which resulted in changes in the amount and composition of products and coke.

  • In this study, a test equipment which enables to feed endothermic fuel which is heated in the inside and outside environment of a high-speed vehicle and evaluate the heat exchangers' performance was designed and manufactured. For smooth operation of the test equipment, a test procedure that supplied endothermic fuel at high temperatures was established. The catalyst performance test was conducted based on the supply condition of the endothermic fuel and the amount of heat absorbed was analyzed. The validation of the test equipment was proved by comparing the results of catalytic reaction with the previous studies under similar reaction condition. This test equipment can be utilized in the endothermic reaction tests of catalyzed endothermic fuel under various conditions.
