ECONOMIC ASSESSMENT OF THE SOLAR-ENERGY SYSTEM USING LIFE CYCLE COST ANALYSIS

  • As the use of new and renewable energy is one of the ways by which the exhaustion of fossil fuels and the other existing environmental problems can be addressed, a policy of spreading information regarding it and of conducting R&D related to it is currently being implemented in advanced countries. In the construction field, the concept of "green building" was born, and the application of this concept has increased, with the end in view of achieving energy savings, resource savings, and recycling, and of conserving the natural environment. In this context, the government of Korea amended the "Law on the Development, Use, and Promotion of New and Recycled Energy" in 2004, which contains 11 provisions related to new and renewable energy and their sources, including solar and geothermal energy as well as sunlight, water, rainfall, and organisms. Since solar-energy should be used instead of fossil fuels by converting sunlight directly into electricity, many researches on this subject are in progress. There are few researches, however, employing the economic approach to the subject. Thus, in this study, an economic assessment of the solar-energy system was conducted using both life cycle cost (LCC) analysis and sensitivity analysis. The results of the LCC analysis show that the solar-energy system will become economically better than the fossil fuel system after 16 years, although the initial construction cost of the solar-energy system is higher than that of the fossil fuel system. The results of this study are expected to be used in selecting an eco-friendly and economical solar-energy system when the construction of a green building is planned.

  • Due to the building energy consumption of total energy consumption of Korea takes over 24%, economizing building energy and using renewable energy resources is being required. To suggest the prototype of zero energy house of country house, the passive systems and active systems are applicated and simulated. In case of wall insulation system is applicated, the heating load of building is reduced. Also, clear triple pair glazing system reduced 2.1% of heating load of building. The amount of reducing heating load by infiltration is depending on the Heating system. In this model, the 0.3ACH made 14.6% saving on heating load from base infiltration 0.82ACH. The solar thermal system of active system could save 80% of DHW and PV system supplies electric power more than average consumption of year. Through the optimum process, the end use of zero energy house of country house is 36kWh/m2.yr and total energy consumption is reduced about 74.2%.

  • Nowadays the concern about development and diffusion strategies of new & renewable energy and its technologies is getting higher globally as Kyoto Protocol has taken effect this year and oil has been rising in price tremendously. Developed countries have already commenced the study and research for this problem and are looking for various solutions. In this paper, environment of new & renewable energy in Korea is analyzed and estimated using the learning curve, which has been powerfully used for analyses of end-use equipments' characteristics in existing studies, as a pre-study for proposing appropriate strategies and feasible methods. The sample study shows how prices of facilities affect on the penetration of new & renewable energy.

Reaction of Gae-Phase Atomic Hydrogen with Chemisorbed Hydrogen Atoms on an Iron Surface

  • The reaction of gas-phase atomic hydrogen with hydrogen atoms chemisorbed on Fe(110) surface is studied by use of classical trajectory procedures. Flow of energy between the reaction zone and bulk solid phase has been treated in the generalized Langevin equation approach. A London-Eyring-Polanyi-Sato energy surface is used for the reaction zone interaction. Most reactive events are found to occur in strong single-impact collisions on a subpicosecond scale via the Eley-Rideal mechanism. The extent of reaction is large and a major fraction of the available energy goes into the vibrational excitation of H2, exhibiting a vibrational population inversion. Dissipation of reaction energy to the heat bath can be adequately described using a seven-atom chain with the chain end bound to the rest of solid. The extent of reaction is not sensitive to the variation of surface temperature in the range of Ts=0-300 K in the fixed gas temperature, but it shows a minimum near 1000 K over the Tg=300-2500 K.

  • In this study, we proposed the necessity of reusing the battery industry after domestic use, preparing legal arrangements by step for recycling, clarifying responsible materials by processing stage, and establishing infrastructure and screening diagnostic rating system. The purpose of this study is to establish a life cycle integrated management system for electric vehicle batteries and to find suitable ways for improving the lifespan of electric vehicle batteries, reuse, and recycling in stages to avoid other environmental pollution problems due to batteries after using electric vehicles used to reduce environmental pollution due to climate change.

  • Increasing energy costs have caused profitability problems for paper suppliers. Therefore unprofitable lines are being closed down. The actions aiming for improved profits are focused either on cost savings or on increasing the capacity of the remaining machines. The runnability of a paper machine and its total efficiency have a significant effect on energy consumption. Producing one ton of waste paper consumes at least as much energy as producing the same amount of sellable end product. New automation solutions enable significant cost-effective improvements to the total efficiency of a line without large investment projects. The measures focus on minimizing changes, interruptions, interruption recovery times and grade change times. Newest actuators, online quality measurements and wet end analysators create an improvement potential, which can be optimally implemented with the latest machine direction control solutions, based on model predictive control concepts. Equally, drying management is significant to the energy consumption. The newest control strategies optimize the use of various drying actuators for different situations; either by responding to changes as efficiently as possible or by using only the cheapest energy sources in stable situations. An even steam supply, which is vital for paper machines, is achieved with control for the power plant steam network. This makes possible to avoid the delays upon starting the paper machine and assure an even steam supply for the drying section and the actuators. This document describes means which have brought significant energy and raw material savings for paper machines. Metso Automation has provided efficiency improvement packages, which are usually based on optimized control of dry weight and drying in all running conditions. The solutions are based on performance analysis, on which the estimations for improvement potential and the necessary actions are based on. Typically benefits on an annual level have been from hundreds of thousands of euros to over one million euro. For example, variations in dry weight have been decreased more than 50%. The results are presented with a few examples. Additionally, the analysis models, adjustment solutions and the changes in running methods with which the results were achieved, are presented.

Abstract The energy evaluation for the Rod field test to be at the basic sources and will be able to calculate the trusted information are measured from the tip.

Study on the effect of reducing consumption of domestic electric power by managing model energy mileage system in Busan (부산시 에너지마일리지제 시범운영을 통한 가정용 전력 소비절감 효과분석)

  • To promote citizen's involvement in the GHG(Green House Gas) reduction policy, Busan city administration adopted an pilot energy incentive system called 'energy mileage'. The energy mileage system was designed to make energy end-users motivated to reduce domestic electricity use by providing financial rewards. Through the course of the pilot period, 5,3330 householders volunteerly participated the pilot system. About 66% of the participants managed to make energy saving against the same period of the previous year while 38.8% achieved the targeted reduction rate(i.e. over 10%) and received the equivalent rewards.

Semi analytical solutions for flexural-torsional buckling of thin-walled cantilever beams with doubly symmetric cross-sections

  • An unbraced cantilever beam subjected to loads which cause bending about the major axis may buckle in a flexuraltorsional mode by deflecting laterally and twisting. For the efficient design of these structures, design engineers require a simple accurate equation for the elastic flexural-torsional buckling load. Existing solutions for the flexural-torsional buckling of cantilever beams have mainly been derived by numerical methods which are tedious to implement. In this research, an attempt is made to derive a theoretical equation by the energy method using different buckled shapes. However, the results of a finite element flexural-torsional buckling analysis reveal that the buckled shapes for the lateral deflection and twist rotation are different for cantilever beams. In particular, the buckled shape for the twist rotation also varies with the section size. In light of these findings, the finite element flexural-torsional buckling analysis was then used to derive simple accurate equations for the elastic buckling load and moment for cantilever beams subjected to end point load, uniformly distributed load and end moment. The results are compared with previous research and it was found that the equations derived in this study are accurate and simple to use.

Application of analytic hierarchy process technique for selecting a hydrothermal energy site (수열에너지 입지 선정을 위한 계층화분석법의 적용)

  • In this study, an evaluation system that can be used to evaluate the feasibility of developing and supplying hydrothermal energy for the operation of large-scale complex facilities was developed. To this end, this study derived factors to be considered when selecting a location for the use of hydrothermal energy using raw water from multi-purpose dams and regional water supply systems through literature survey and expert interviews. The evaluation indicators derived from this study are divided into four sectors: hydrothermal energy utilization factors, location factors, planning factors, and disaster safety factors, and are composed of 10 mid-level indicators and 34 detailed planning indicators. The relative importance of all factors was derived using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique, and the developed evaluation indicators and relative importance were applied to four multi-purpose dam regions in the country. As a result, it was found that in the development and use of hydrothermal energy utilizing regional raw water supply line the urban planning conditions of the supply site can have a greater impact on the location selection results than the hydrothermal energy development itself. Due to the characteristics of the evaluation indicators developed in this study and their nature as comprehensive indicators, it is believed that the results should be applied to determine the overall adequacy of site selection in the early stages of hydrothermal energy development. In the future, it is believed that it will be necessary to analyze the problems in supplying and operating hydrothermal energy using raw water from multi-purpose dams and regional water resources. Based on the analysis the evaluation system developed in this study is expected to be improved and supplemented.
