  • The data delivery confirmation method of MIL-STD-188-220C, which is a tactical wireless mobile Ad-Hoc communication protocol, is that a source node requires the end-to-end ack from all destination nodes and the data-link ack from 1-hop neighboring destination nodes and relaying nodes, regardless of the hop distance from a source node to destination nodes. This method has the problem to degrade the whole communication network performance because of excessive data traffic due to the duplicate use of end-to-end ack and data-link ack, and the collision among end-to-end acks on the wireless network in the case of confirming a data delivery within an 1-hop distance. In order to solve this problem, this paper has proposed the method to perform the data delivery confirmation with the improvement of communication network performance through the data traffic reduction by achieving the reliable data delivery confirmation requiring the only data-link ack within an 1-hop distance. The effects of the proposed method are analyzed in the two aspects of the data delivery confirmation delay time and the data delivery confirmation success ratio.

  • In recent years, many applications in WSN have increasingly interested in data transfer reliability. In this paper, we propose a dynamic grouping transfer mechanism which maintains both reliability and energy efficiency in transmission from a source to a sink. The proposed scheme considers channel error of each node. Then it uses an end-to-end ACK transmission in a group and a hop-by-hop ACK transmission between groups. Consequently this mechanism minimize the cost of packet transfer along with enhancing the network lifetime and reliability.

  • In general, wireless MAC uses the ACK for reliability. Meanwhile, in wireless sensor network, data is delivered periodically and redundantly. In these situations, every ACK transmission causes the reliability flexible applications to waste some energy. IEEE 802.15.4 developed for energy efficiency has the option of using ACK or not, but there are no researches exploiting this peculiarity. In this paper, we proposed the selective unacknowledged transmission satisfying some requirements (e.g., end-to-end delivery) by removing the ACK when frames are delivered well and using the ACK when frames are delivered poorly. Also, we performed several evaluations exploiting the NS2 simulator.

  • TCP receivers deliver ACK packets to senders for reliable end-to-end transfer. When ACK packets are not transferred properly because of network congestion, the performance of TCP degrades. This paper proposes a reverse congestion warning mechanism and a congestion handling mechanism in heterogeneous networks with heavy background traffic in the backward direction. Help from TCP receivers or hardware such as routers and gateways other than the ACK packets themselves is not necessary. TCP senders compare the arrival intervals of ACK data passed from receivers and the difference in t imestamp values echoed by receivers. According to the simulation results using the NS-2 network simulator, the proposed scheme shows a performance elevation of 20% greater than Reno, 150% greater than New Reno, and 450% greater than Westwood, respectively, under heterogeneous networks and that the error rate of the radio link is 1% when the backward network is congested.

  • As the multimedia application traffic takes more portion in the internet traffic, it is necessary to control the network congestion through the congestion control protocol. In addition, the QoS-enabled networks such as DiffServ become an indispensable technology when running the multimedia applications. However, the previously proposed end-to-end congestion control algorithms take the round trip time to react the network congestion. Thus, as the RTT becomes larger, the reaction against the congestion gets delayed further, while the network congestion gets worse. In addition the performance of end-to-end congestion control algorithm is degraded if the QoS-enabled network runs the congestion control mechanism in the network level without any coordination between them. In this paper, we propose the early rate adaptation protocol for the DiffServ network which effectively linke the congestion control algorithm at the host and the congestion mechanism in the network together. By taking advantage of early congestion notification from the network it is possible to react the network congestion more quickly and effectively.

  • In this paper, we improve the performance of bidirectional TCP connection over end-to-end network that uses transfer rate-based flow and congestion control. The sharing of a common buffer by TCP packets and acknowledgement has been known to result in an effect called ack compression, where acks of a connection arrive at the source bunched together, resulting in unfairness and degraded throughput. The degradation in throughput due to bidirectional traffic can be significant. For example, even in the simple case of symmetrical connections with adequate window size, the connection efficiency is improved about 20% for three levels of background traffic 2.5Mbps, 5.0Mbps and 7.5Mbps. Otherwise, the throughput of jitter is reduced about 50% because round trip delay time is smaller between source node and destination node. Also, we show that throughput curve is improved with connection rate algorithm which is proposed for TCP congestion avoidance as a function of aggressiveness threshold for three levels of background traffic 2.5Mbps, 5Mbps and 7.5Mbps.

  • Current end-to-end congestion control depends only on the information of end points (using three duplicate ACK packets) and generally responds slowly to the network congestion. This mechanism can't avoid TCP global synchronization in which TCP congestion window size is fluctuated during congestion period. Furthermore, if RTT(Round Trip Time) is increased, three duplicate ACK packets are not correct congestion signals because congestion might already disappear and the host may send more packets until it receives three duplicate ACK packets. Recently there are increasing interests in solving end-to-end congestion control using AQM(Active Queue Management) to improve the performance of TCP protocols. AQM is a variation of RED-based congestion control. In this paper, we first evaluate the effectiveness of the current AQM schemes such as RED, CHOKe, ARED, FRED and SRED, over traffic with different rates and over traffic with mixed responsive and non-responsive flows, respectively. In particular, CHOKe mechanism shows greater unfairness, especially when more unresponsive flows exist in a shared link. We then propose a new AQM scheme using CHOKe mechanism, called DQC(Double Queue CHOKe), which uses two FIFO queues before applying CHOKe mechanism to adaptive congestion control. Simulation shows that it works well in protecting congestion-sensitive flows from congestion-causing flows and exhibits better performances than other AQM schemes. Also we use partial state information, proposed in LRURED, to improve our mechanism.

  • Many applications in Wireless Sensor Networks require collecting all data without loss from nodes. End-to-End data retransmission, which is used in the Internet for reliable transport, becomes very inefficient in Wireless Sensor Networks, since wireless communication, and constrained resources pose new challenges. We look at factors affecting reliability, and search for efficient combinations of the possible options. This paper proposes an efficient Overhearing based reliable transfer protocol in Wireless Sensor Networks by introducing Selective and implicit Acknowledgement. Finally, it is clarified that the proposed scheme is efficient for reliable data transfer in WSN.

ACC (Active congestion control) is a variation of TCP-based congestion control with queue management In addition traffic modifications nay begin at the congested router (active router) so that ACC will respond more quickly to congestion than TCP variants. The advantage of this method is that the host uses the information provided by the active routers as well as the end points in order to relieve congestion and improve throughput. In this paper, we model enhanced ACC, provide its algorithm which control the congestion by using information in core networks and communications between active routers, and finally demonstrate enhanced performance by simulation.
