Fast Enhancement Layer Encoding Method using CU Depth Correlation between Adjacent Layers for SHVC

  • This paper proposes a fast enhancement layer coding method to reduce computational complexity for Scalable HEVC (SHVC) which is based on High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). The proposed method decreases encoding time by simplifying Rate Distortion Optimization (RDO)for enhancement layers (EL). The simplification is achieved by restricting CU depths based on the correlation of coding unit (CU) depths between adjacent layers and scalability (spatial or quality) of EL. Comparing with the performance of SHM 1.0 software encoder, the proposed method reduces the encoding time by up to 31.5%.

  • In wireless ad-hoc network, knowing the available bandwidth of the time varying channel is imperative for live video streaming applications. This is because the available bandwidth is varying all the time and strictly limited against the large data size of video streaming. Additionally, adapting the encoding rate to the suitable bit-rate for the network, where an overlarge encoding rate induces congestion loss and playback delay, decreases the loss and delay. While some effective rate controlling methods have been proposed and simulated well like VTP (Video Transport Protocol) [1], implementing to cooperate with the encoder and tuning the parameters are still challenging works. In this paper, we show our result of the implementation experiment of VTP based encoding rate controlling method and then introduce some techniques of our parameter tuning for a video streaming application over wireless environment.

  • JPEG2000 achieves a target bit rate by selecting the bitstream for adequate coding passes after encoding full passes in Tier-1 coder. Tier-1 encoding is complicated and time-consuming process. In this paper, we propose a new rate control technique that chooses the necessary passes without the full passes coding of Tier-1 by using previous image information for volumetric image. The simulation result shows that the proposed technique reduces encoding time of coding passes up to 81.5%.

  • International standard specification, H.264/SVC improved from H.264/AVC, is set up so as to promote free use of huge multimedia data in various channel environments.;H.264/AVC is a international standard speicification for video compression, adopted and commercialized as standard for DMB broadcasting by JVT of ISO/IEC MPEG and ITU-T VCEG. SVC standard uses 'intra/inter prediction' in AVC as well as 'inter-layer intra prediction', 'inter-layer motion prediction' and 'inter-layer residual prediction' to improve efficiency of encoding. Among prediction technologies, 'inter-layer intra prediction' is to use co-located block of up sampled sublevels as a prediction signal. At this time, application of interpolation is one of the most important factors to determine encoding efficiency. SVC's currently using poly-phase FIR filter of 4-tap and 2-tap respectively to luma components. This paper is written for the purpose of analyzing encoding performance according to the interpolation. For this purpose, we applied poly-phase FIR filter of '2-tap', '4-tap' and '6-tap' respectively to luma components and then measured bit-rate, PNSR and running time of interpolation filter. We're expecting that the analysis results of this paper will be utilized for effective application of interpolation filter. SVC standard uses 'intra/inter prediction' in AVC as well as 'inter-layer intra prediction', 'inter-layer motion prediction' and 'inter-layer residual prediction' to improve efficiency of encoding.

Compression of Normal Vectors using Octree Encoding (옥트리 인코딩을 이용한 법선 벡터의 압축)

  • Three-dimensional mesh models have been widely used in various applications such as simulations, animations, and e-catalogs. In such applications the normal vectors of mesh models are used mainly for shading and take up the major portion of data size and transmission time paper over networks. Therefore a variety of techniques have been developed to compress them efficiently. In this paper, we propose the MOEC (Modified Octree Encoding Compression) algorithm, which allow multi lever compression ratios for 3D mesh models. In the algorithm, a modified octree has nodes representing their own positions and supporting a depth of the tree so that the normal vectors are compressed up to levels where the shading is visually indistinguishable. This approach provides efficient in compressing normals with multi-level ratios, without additional encoding when changing in compression ratio is required.

  • For fast MRI, the number of phase encoding steps has to be reduced. However, the reconstructed image is aliased if the phase encoding steps don't satisfy Nyquist sampling theory. SENSE is used in order to eliminate the aliasing effect as well as to reduce imaging time. SENSE is a linear algebraic technique applied to the multiple receiver data.   • In this paper, we present the method of skipping the quantization for fast video encoding. Based on the theoretical analyzes for the integer transform and quantization in H.264 video coder, we can derive a sufficient threshold under which each quantized coefficient becomes zero. In addition, in order to reduce the complexity of the fast video encoding, complexity is improved, leading to improvement of total encoding time saving for given threshold. The simulation results show the capability of the proposed algorithm.

  • H.264 is the prominent video coding standard in various applications such as real-time streaming and digital multimedia broadcasting, since it provides enhanced compression performance, error resilience tools, and network adaptation. Compression efficiency of H.264 has been improved, however, it requires more computing and memory access than traditional methods. In this paper we proposed adaptive intra fast algorithm for real-time video surveillance system reducing the encoding complexity of H264/A VC. For this aim, temporal interrelationship between macroblock in the previous and the current frame is used to decide the encoding mode of macroblock fast. As a result, though video quality was deteriorated a little, less than 0.04dB, and bit rate was somewhat increased in suggested method, however, proposed method improved encoding time significantly and, in particular, encoding time of an image with little changes of neighboring background such as surveillance video was more shortened than traditional methods.

  • To implement a cloud game service platform supporting multiple users and devices based on real-time streaming, there are many technical needs, including game screen and sound capturing, audio/video encoding in real time created by a high-performance server-generated game screen, and real-time streaming to client devices, such as low-cost PCs, smart devices, and set-top boxes. We therefore present a game service platform for the running and management of the game screen, as well as running the sound on the server, in which the captured and encoded game screen and sound separately provide client devices through real-time streaming. The proposed platform offers Web-based services that allow game play on smaller end devices without requiring the games to be installed locally.

Fast Modified Zerotree Algorithm (고속 수정 제로트리 알고리즘)

  • In this paper, we propose a fast and efficient method that improves the performance of embedded zerotree wavelet(EZW) algorithm introduced by Sharipo. In the EZW algorithm, two bits are allocated for a symbol, but it is inefficient for compression and the zerotree coding wastes much time at encoding. In this paper, in order to increase the efficiency of compression, it will be allocated a variable bit for a symbol at each subband. To reduce the encoding time, we use a backscan method and lifting scheme instead of filter bank in wavelet transform. Experimental result are shown that the algorithm suggested in this paper has a better performance about 0.3∼1.5㏈ PSNR while the encoding time was speeded up more than 2-10 times compared with the EZW algorithm.
