  • The key to the long-term preservation of electronic records is the long-term retention of the bitstream that contains the original functional attributes and appearances of the electronic records that were originally created and utilized. Considering economic and technical aspects, most of the major domestic and foreign archives have adopted a migration strategy that allows conversion to a new format depending on the stability and reliability of the format containing the original bitstream. However, as the type of electronic records varies and its scope continuously expands, several problems arise if a single migration strategy is observed. Therefore, the applicability of the emulation strategy is examined in this paper to reproduce the system and application environment where electronic records are created and utilized. As such, electronic records can be maintained without any changes in the bitstream by utilizing cloud computing technology.

  • As the system complexity increases, it is important to develop high-level verification techniques for fast and efficient design verifications. In this research, fast verification techniques for hardware and software co-design systems have been developed by using logic emulation and algorithm-level simulation. For faster and superior functional verification, we partition the system being designed into hardware and software parts, and implement the divided parts by using interface modules. We also propose several hardware design techniques for efficient hardware emulation. Experimental results, obtained by using a Reed-Solomon decoder system, show that our new verification methodology is more than 12,000 times faster than a commercial simulation tool for the modified Euclid's algorithm block and the overall verification time is reduced by more than 50%.

  • Hybrid fuzzing which combines fuzzing and concolic execution, has proved its ability to achieve higher code coverage and therefore find more bugs. However, current hybrid fuzzers usually suffer from inefficiency and poor scalability when applied to complex, real-world program testing. We observed that the performance bottleneck is the inefficient cooperation between the fuzzer and concolic executor and the slow symbolic emulation. In this paper, we propose a novel solution named EPfuzzer to improve hybrid fuzzing. EPfuzzer implements two key ideas: 1) only the hardest-to-reach branch will be prioritized for concolic execution to avoid generating uninteresting inputs; and 2) only input bytes relevant to the target branch to be flipped will be symbolized to reduce the overhead of the symbolic emulation. With these optimizations, EPfuzzer can be efficiently targeted to the hardest-to-reach branch. We evaluated EPfuzzer with three sets of programs: five real-world applications and two popular benchmarks (LAVA-M and the Google Fuzzer Test Suite). The evaluation results showed that EPfuzzer was much more efficient and scalable than the state-of-the-art concolic execution engine (QSYM). EPfuzzer was able to find more bugs and achieve better code coverage. In addition, we discovered seven previously unknown security bugs in five real-world programs and reported them to the vendors.

  • Ethernet passive optical networks (EPONs) are an emerging access network technology which has a point-to-multipoint topology. EPONs operate point-to-multipoint in the OLT-ONU direction, and point-to-point in the ONU-OLT direction. To support point-to-point emulation and shared LAM emulation, EPONs use multi-point control protocol (MPCP). The MPCP uses logical link identification (LLID) field for frame tagging and filtering between the OLT and ONUs. In this paper, I propose logical-group identification (LGID) for logical link-based multicasting or VLAN services in EPONs. Using LGID with new frame tagging and filtering rules, EPONs support differentiated multimedia broadcasting or multicasting services. Additionally, EPONs can support logical link-based VLAN services that divides ONUs into several subsets.

  • Despite the convenience brought by the advances in web and Internet technology, users are increasingly being exposed to the danger of various types of cyber attacks. In particular, recent studies have shown that today's cyber attacks usually occur on the web via malware distribution and the stealing of personal information. A drive-by download is a kind of web-based attack for malware distribution. Researchers have proposed various methods for detecting a drive-by download attack effectively. However, existing methods have limitations against recent evasion techniques, including JavaScript obfuscation, hiding, and dynamic code evaluation. In this paper, we propose an emulation-based malicious webpage detection method. Based on our study on the limitations of the existing methods and the state-of-the-art evasion techniques, we will introduce four features that can detect malware distribution networks and we applied them to the proposed method. Our performance evaluation using a URL scan engine provided by VirusTotal shows that the proposed method detects malicious webpages more precisely than existing solutions.
