Emotion Communication through MotionTypography Based on Movement Analysis (모션타이포그래피의 움직임을 통한 감성전달)

  • MotionTypography is crucial to effective emotional communication in digital society. In this paper, I study movements to represent emotion using motiontypography and approach two goals: First to define an emotional measure by means of emotion assesses by the public, Second to research image characteristics corresponding to movements. In this dissertation, we collect emotional words by literature and experimental surveys and extract representative emotional words using KJ method and clustering analysis. The results of research, the emotional axes selected for motiontypography represent 'calm to active' and 'soft to stiff', the viewers feel a specific emotional state from some movements of motiontypography. If, we investigate the relationship of motiontypographic visual elements with emotional words are achieved together, I think it will serve as a motiontypographic guideline that enables helping the public to easily produce motiontypography.

Effects of anger expression style and perceived emotional competence on school anger in adolescents (청소년의 분노표현 양식과 지각된 정서적 유능성이 학교분노에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of the present study is to examine effects of anger expression and perceived emotional competence on school anger in adolescents. The participants were 304 high school students (134 males, 170 females). They were administered the anger-related subscales (anger-out, anger-in, and anger control) of the Korean Version of the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI-K), the Korean Version of Trait Meta-Mood Scale (K-TMMS), and the Korean Version of School Anger Inventory(SAI-K). The results showed that school anger positively correlated with anger-out and anger-in, and negatively correlated with anger control and perceived emotional competence. Neither interaction effects of anger-out and perceived emotional competence nor interaction effects of anger-in and perceived emotional competence on school anger were significant. On the contrary, interaction effects of anger control and perceived emotional competence on school anger were significant. The results of post-hoc analysis revealed that the effect of anger control on school anger was significant in the case of high perceived emotional competence but not significant in the case of low perceived emotional competence. Based on these results, it was suggested that psychological programs designed to reduce school anger in adolescents need effective measures to enhance not only anger control skills but also perceived emotional competence.

How to Express Emotion: Role of Prosody and Voice Quality Parameters (감정 표현 방법: 운율과 음질의 역할)

  • In this paper, we examine the role of emotional acoustic cues including both prosody and voice quality parameters for the modification of a word sense. For the extraction of prosody parameters and voice quality parameters, we used 60 pieces of speech data spoken by six speakers with five different emotional states. We analyzed eight different emotional acoustic cues, and used a discriminant analysis technique in order to find the dominant sequence of acoustic cues. As a result, we found that anger has a close relation with intensity level and 2nd formant bandwidth range; joy has a relative relation with the position of 2nd and 3rd formant values and intensity level; sadness has a strong relation only with prosody cues such as intensity level and pitch level; and fear has a relation with pitch level and 2nd formant value with its bandwidth range. These findings can be used as the guideline for find-tuning an emotional spoken language generation system, because these distinct sequences of acoustic cues reveal the subtle characteristics of each emotional state.

Peer Conflict Internal State Talk, and Communicative Strategies in Pretend Play (상상놀이에서의 갈등, 내적 상태의 표현 및 의사소통 전략에 대한 연구)

  • This study investigated the relationship between conflict issues and resolution strategies in pretend play. Also, the relations among frequency of internal state terms, conflict resolution, and communicative strategies were examined. 704 and 5 year old preschoolers, each paired with self-chosen peer, were observed and videotaped during 20-minute play session. Findings revealed that conflict issues were associated with resolution strategies. Internal state language and communicative strategies were related with conflict resolutions in pretend play, which shared with socio-emotional ability.

Awareness of Information, Anxiety, Distress, and Perceived Value of Information in Patients undergoing Endoscopic Examination (내시경검사 대상자의 정보인지, 불안, 불편 및 정보의 가치)

  • Purpose: A descriptive study was conducted to identify awareness of information, emotional distress, behavioral distress, and perceived value of information in clients who were scheduled for endoscopic examinations, and to determine correlations between the variables. Method: Participants were 87 clients who were scheduled for endoscopic examinations; gastroscopy, bronchoscopy, and colonoscopy. The questionnaires were collected from September to December, 2002 by a trained nurse. Self reports, interviews, and observations were used. Data were analyzed with frequencies, percentages, means, Pearson correlation coefficients, ANOVA, and Scheffe post test using the SPSS/PC 9.0. Result: The score for awareness of information was 17.46, state anxiety was 47.26, emotional distress during exam was 2.90, behavioral distress was 11.18, and perceived value of information was 4.21, Clients aged above 60 showed significantly lower awareness of information than other groups. Clients undergoing broncoscopy reported significantly higher emotional distress during the ekam than subjects for colonoscopy. Clients undergoing gastroscopy showed significantly higher behavioral distress than any of the others. There were no relationships between awareness of information and anxiety, but, a significant positive relationship was found between anxiety and emotional distress during exam, between emotional distress and behavioral distress, and between awareness of information and perceived value of information. Conclusion: Awareness of information by the clients through provision of an educational booklet was low, and clients showed moderate level of state anxiety. Research studies are needed to compare providing information with other interventions for comfortable progress of endoscopic examinations. Especially specific strategies should be established for elderly clients to facilitate awareness of information.

A Study on Robust Speech Emotion Feature Extraction Under the Mobile Communication Environment (이동통신 환경에서 강인한 음성 감성특징 추출에 대한 연구)

  • In this paper, we propose an emotion recognition system that can discriminate human emotional state into neutral or anger from the speech captured by a cellular-phone in real time. In general. the speech through the mobile network contains environment noise and network noise, thus it can causes serious System performance degradation due to the distortion in emotional features of the query speech. In order to minimize the effect of these noise and so improve the system performance, we adopt a simple MA (Moving Average) filter which has relatively simple structure and low computational complexity, to alleviate the distortion in the emotional feature vector. Then a SFS (Sequential Forward Selection) feature optimization method is implemented to further improve and stabilize the system performance. Two pattern recognition method such as k-NN and SVM is compared for emotional state classification. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method provides very stable and successful emotional classification performance such as 86.5%. so that it will be very useful in application areas such as customer call-center.

  • This paper proposes a novel touch interface for recognizing user's touch pattern and understanding emotional information by eliciting natural user interaction. To classify physical touches, we represent the similarity between touches by analyzing touches based on its dictionary meaning and design the algorithm to recognize various touch patterns in real time. Finally we suggest the methodology to estimate user's emotional state based on touch.

Study on the Motion Acting in a Game Character Animation (게임캐릭터애니메이션 동작연기연구)

  • This study aims to develop the game character to encompass more complicated motions, an upgrade from simple actions, to demonstrate different emotional state. The character takes a medium role in describing various situations by applying the motion of pantomimist and making a connection to the 3D character action. Motion acting is an upgraded version of the basic motion to show various emotional phases such as joy, anger, sorrow and pleasure. Moreover, it delivers clear messages through emotional acting in opposition to symbolic language and provides various perspectives of motion acting.

IDENTIFYING EMOTIONAL ELEMENTS OF APARTMENT NOISE (공동주택 소음에 대한 감성 평가)

  • The purpose of this study was to extract emotional dimensions from Korean adjectives relating to apartment noise. Noise-related 296 Korean adjectives were extracted from a dictionary and three evaluators selected 96 adjectives from those by removing very similar ones in meaning. Two types of 96 7-point scales were conducted to college students for evaluation, whether each adjective describes apartment noise appropriately. From this evaluation, 28 adjectives having above 4.5 points were selected. Again, 8 different types of 7-point scales on 378 adjective pairs(28 x 27/2) were administrated to separate college students to evaluate the degree of similarity between 28 adjectives. Based upon this evaluation, 14 adjectives were finally selected and scores on similarity sere analyzed through two different statistical analyses (Multi-dimensional scale and Cluster analysis). The results showed that three dimensions (displeasure, sensitivity and perceived loudness) exist in peoples' emotional response state to apartment noise. The previous studies have treated annoyance and sensitivity as separate measures to noise. However, this study showed that these two factors were on the same emotional dimension labeled as 'sensitivity' In addition, new dimension, labeled as 'displeasure', was found.

  • The emotion recognition is one of the most significant interface technologies which make the high level of human-machine communication possible. The central nervous system stimulated by emotional stimuli affects the autonomous nervous system like a heart, blood vessel, endocrine organs, and so on. Therefore bio-signals like HRV, ECG and EEG can reflect one' emotional state. This study investigates the correlation between emotional states and bio-signals to realize the emotion recognition. This study also covers classification of human emotional states, selection of the effective bio-signal and signal processing. The experimental results presented in this paper show possibility of the emotion recognition.
