  • Inclusive design is increasingly gaining attention, as some people find using products difficult after becoming physically impaired, despite daily use. However, making inclusive products is a challenge for designers or companies, as a lack of knowledge and tools stems their low involvement in it. Developing inclusive design tools is thus needed. This study developed criteria to assess upper extremity capabilities corresponding to specific daily activities. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 58 physiatrists and orthopedists. Non-parametric statistics were employed and medians were adopted as representative scores in the assessment criteria based on normality and reliability test results, non-normal data, and strong reliability of respondents in ranking. Consequently, an assessment tool was developed with 14 criteria (divided into range of motion and strength) and capability scores between 0 and 100, which discerned the moderately impaired from the severely disabled and fully capable. Since the doctors agreed to adopt the criteria but assign numeric values, especially for mild impairments, their capability assessment perception was likely influenced by dichotomy. To compensate for these deficits, qualitative or ergonomic approaches are considered simultaneously.

  • The present study explores two relationships: first, between number of payment and payment option preference, and second, total sum and payment option preference, with pain of payment as a mediator variable. The analyses revealed that consumers who feel higher pain of payment preferred the pennies-a-day pricing to the aggregate pricing when the per-payment price is low. Consumers who experience higher pain of payment prefer to pay in small frequent installments because they feel the small per-payment price can be comparable to daily expense. Consumers who experienced higher pain of payment preferred aggregate pricing to pennies-a-day pricing when the per-payment price was high. When the per-payment price is high, it is no longer comparable to daily expense, thus leading to greater pain of payment among consumers. The study discusses the implications for mechanism of pain of payment on payment option preference.

  • This study examined effects of gender and empathic emotional expression of an anthropomorphic interface agent on users. assessment of the agent. In addition, it examined effects of gender and emotional expression regardless of whether visual fidelity of the agent. In Study 1, The agents were manipulated by photographs of human face. The agent expressed empathic emotion by making an other-oriented emotional response congruent with another's perceived welfare. Subjects participated in a task with the agent and then they assessed the agent by rating interpersonal assessment scale. The result reported their preference to the female agent. In addition, they tended to make positive assessment to the agent of opposite gender. In the study 2, gender and expressed emotion of the agent with low fidelity was manipulated. Subjects participated in a task with the agent and then they assessed the agent by rating the same interpersonal assessment scale as study 1. The result reported their preference to the female agent. In addition, they preferred the agent expressing empathic emotion to the agent expressing self-oriented emotion or no emotion. Though the agent had low visual fidelity, its gender and expressed empathic emotion could make a significant effect on users' assessment.

  • Exploring on two major questions: 'Why do we feel more love for certain objects?' and 'How can design use this knowledge to realize design sustainability?', this article presents an alternative way of approaching the problem of design sustainability from the perspective that our relationships with design objects are of an extended mode of social relations. Recent discussions on design sustainability have transformed the notion of the problem by seeing it as a problem of our basic perception of design objects and our relationships with them. In this light, I propose that design sustainability could not be achieved solely by approaching from a mechanistic perspective, but by re-framing the way we see and relate things around us and by supporting our changes and actions to move forward a more sustainable notion of our relationships with the objects. As a way to realize design sustainability, I propose that design should involve story-making quality that supports our initiatives to build more affectional relations with objects by seeing the objects as entities of communication that tell stories of us, thus reflect our identities and meanings of our lives. Proceeding on the exploration of the subject, I present some of conceptual outlines in forms of an image diary, an interplay-able furniture unit, and a performance instruction that suggest a way for a special story-making process and thus a stronger emotional tie with the objects.

  • In order to concludes that human being is in the making, not a being already perfectly made, this paper goes through four steps. The first step raises a question that human being is only a being of reason. The Kant's assertion that human being has a moral capacity of 'good will' seems to be distorted portrait of human being. The second step calls into a question that human being can obey universal moral laws. Any universal moral law can't be obeyed by moral agent, because he can't exclude his external situations which are ceaselessly changing. Nevertheless imperatives of reason which require to obey the universal moral laws seems to be a 'unfortunate legacy' to human being. The third step demonstrates that imperatives of reason are originated from dualism which have dichotomize "mind vs. body" as "internal capacity vs. external situation". According to dualism, imperatives of reason require internal capacity to exclude emotions or desires which are sensitive to external influences. The fourth step discusses that interacting of inner and outer is to be necessary for human being. Then, reason is to be really in one glove with emotions which are beginning form externals, otherwise reason can't stop being powerless to any external situation. Concludingly any human being is to be processing to a new being, not situating any extreme antagonism of "reason vs. emotion". Because of emotional human animal, not a perfect god, humans being is in the ceaseless process into the making a new self.

  • As the necessity of humanistic education has recently been socially emphasized, aptitude and character test has been conducted in the stage of training instructors to focus on making them equipped with proper ability of humanistic education. Especially, considering characteristics of students in specialized high schools with stronger negative concept of ego along with higher proportion of students looking for job in early ages compared to regular high schools, instructors in specialized high schools need to pay more attention on humanistic education of students compared to those in regular high schools. Therefore, this study has developed social emotion learning (SEL) of preliminary teachers in specialized high schools and analyzed the influence of developed programs on characters in teaching positions of preliminary instructors in specialized high schools. In this study, ADDIE model has been used developing SEL programs, and developed programs were comprised of total six sessions. Social emotion learning has been performed on 27 preliminary teachers in experiment group, and regular academic education courses were given on 30 preliminary teachers in control group. At this time, as for class contents, 'self-recognition' has been dealt with in the first and second sessions followed by 'self-management' in the second and third sessions, 'adjustment in relationship' in the fourth session, 'responsible decision making' in the fifth session, and 'personal relationship' in the sixth session. Classes have been conducted for 90 minutes in average. Since intentional sampling method has been used in this study, difference of pre-scores between groups might influence on the difference on post-scores. Therefore, ANCOVA that adjusted the pre-scores to be consistent has been utilized. As a result, there was a significant difference on the post-scores in characters in teaching positions between experiment group and control group.

  • The reasons of traffic accidents can be classified into the vehicle, road environment and human factors. In development of vehicle and road technologies, the human factor is the most important. The emotion research recently carried out showed that emotions play an important role in human judgment and decision making. They are also expected to partly determine driving behavior. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of drivers' emotions on their driving behavior. The results of this study showed that positive emotions do not affect driving behavior. As for negative emotions, however, safe driving(SD) and comfort driving(CD) factors have a negative correlation, and violence driving(VD) and regulation violation(RO) factors have a positive correlation. This study is significant as a basic study for establishing and determining a policy for reducing traffic accidents and for educating drivers.
