  • The existing conjugated blue emitting material polymer which has been used for the two-wavelength method white-emission has good stability and low operating voltage as merits, but the imbalanced carrier transport has been indicated as problem area. We have introduced a novel blue emitting material having perylene moiety unit with hole transporting ability and blue emitting property and triazine moiety unit with electron transporting ability into the same host chain. We have synthesized N-[p-(perylen-3-y1)pheny1]methacry1 amide (PPMA) monomer and [N-(2,4-dipheny1-1,3,5-triazine)pheny1 methacry1 amide] (DTPM) monomer having blue light-emitting unit and electron transport unit, respectively by three steps. A novel non-conjugated blue emitting material Poly[N -[p(perylene-3-y1) pheny1] methacry1 amide-co-N-[P-(4,6-dipheny1-1,3,5-triazine-2-y1]pheny1]methacry1 amide] (PPPMA-co-DTPM) copolymer having electron transporting unit was synthesized by the solution polymerization of PPMA and DTPM monomers with an AIBN initiator and showed high yield of $75{\%}$. It was very soluble in common organic solvents, and the fabrication of the thin film using a spin coating method was very simple. The PPPMA exhibited a good thermal stability.

  • We synthesized new materials of $Zn(HPB)_2$ and Ir-complexes as blue or red emitting material. We fabricated white Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED) by using $Zn(HPB)_2$ for the blue emitting layer, Ir-complexes for the red emitting layer and $Alq_3$ for the green emitting layer. We fabricated white OLED by using double emitting layers of $Zn(HPB)_2$:Ir-complexes and $Alq_3$. The doping rate of Ir-complexes was varied, such as 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, and 0.8%, respectively. When the doping rate of $Zn(HPB)_2$:Ir-complexes was 0.6%, white emission was achieved. The Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of the white emission was (0.322, 0.312).

  • We have investigated the photolithographic patterning method of light emitting polymer film for polymer light emitting diodes (PLED). Blue light emitting polymers based on polyfluorene, which can be cured photochemically to yield an insoluble form, have been synthesized using Ni(0) mediated Yamamoto polymerization. The relationship between patterning property and several variables such as the intensity of the exposed UV light, the concentrations of additives, has been studied by using optical microscope analysis, UV/visible spectroscopy, and photoluminescence. We have successfully fabricated PLEDs composed of the patterned emissive layer and their electroluminescence property has been also investigated. In this presentation, the detailed photolithographic patterning method and its application for polymer light emitting display will be discussed.

  • Organic light-emitting materials in marine macrophytes from various coastal environments were identified. Twentyeight species from the solvent fractions were examined and identified as candidates for bioorganic light-emitting materials using photoluminescence (PL) spectra and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. We selected 16 solvent fractions from a total of 1,221 prepared from Ishige okamurae, Sargassum confusum, Grateloupia elliptica, Chondracanthus intermedius, Porphyra yezoensis, Meristotheca papulosa, Gelidium amansii, and Scytosiphon lomentaria. The maximum light-emitting PL spectra appeared at various colors, mainly between blue and green, based on chromaticity coordinates, from solvent fractions of M. papulosa, G. amansii, G. elliptica, P. yezoensis, S. lomentaria, I. okamurae, and C. intermedius. These results will contribute to the development of novel organic light-emitting materials.

  • Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) using microcavity effect have attracted great attention because they can reduce the width of emission spectra from organic materials, and enhance brightness from the same material. We demonstrate the simulation results of the radiation properties from top-emitting organic light-emitting diodes (TE-OLEDs) with microcavity structures based on the general electromagnetic theory. Organic materials such as N,N'-di (naphthalene-1-yl)-N,N'-diphenylbenzidine (NPB) as a hole transport layer and tris (8-hydroxyquinoline) ($Alq_3$) as emitting and electron transporting layer are used to form the OLEDs. The organic materials were sandwiched between anode such as Ni or Au and cathode such as Al, Ag, or Al:Ag. The devices were characterized with electroluminescence phenomenon. We confirmed that the simulation results are consistent with experimental results.

  • Highly efficient blue and white phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PHOLEDs) with an exciton-confining structure were investigated in this study. Effective charge confinement was achieved by stacking two emitting layers with different charge-transporting properties, and blue PHOLEDs with a maximum luminance efficiency of 47.9 lm/W were developed by using iridium(III) bis(4,6-(difluorophenyl) pyridinato-N,C2')picolinate (FIrpic) as an electrophosphorescent dopant. Moreover, when the optimized green and red emitting layers were sandwiched between the two stacked blue emitting layers, white PHOLEDs (WOLEDs) with peak external and luminance efficiencies of 19.0% coupling technique.and 54.0 lm/W, respectively, were obtained without the use of any out-coupling technique.

  • Clinically applicable light emitting diode (LED) has been widely investigated because of relatively low heat generation, low cytotoxicity, and non-invasiveness compared to other therapeutic methods. Therefore, we investigated the therapeutic effects of several wavelengths of light emitting diode against human cervical cancer cells and analyzed the individual inhibitory effect for the cancer cell proliferation. In the experiment, prepared HeLa cells were exposed by red, green and blue light-emitting diode for 10 minutes each. Relatively short-wavelength light-emitting diode (blue) showed stronger therapeutic effects than relatively long-wavelength light-emitting diodes.

  • We reported that the evidence of oxygen doping to copper-phthalocyanine (CuPc) by $O_2$-plasma treatment to Au electrode of inverted top emitting organic light emitting diodes (ITOLEDs). The operation voltage of OLEDs at 150 mA/$cm^2$ decreased from 16.1 to 10.3 V as oxygen atoms indiffued to CuPc layer using $O_2$-plasma. Synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy results showed that a new bond of Cu-O appeared and the energy difference between the highest occupied molecular orbital and $E_F$ is lowered by 0.20 eV after plasma treatment. Thus the hole injection barrier was lowered, reducing the turn-on voltage and increasing the quantum efficiency of OLEDs.

  • We report on characteristics of specially designed inductively-coupled-plasma chemical vapor deposition (ICP-CVD) system for top-emitting organic light emitting diodes (TOLEDs). Using high-density plasma on the order of $10^{11}$ electrons/$cm^3$ generated by linear-type antennas connected in parallel and specially designed substrate cooling system, a 100 nm-thick transparent $SiN_{x}$ passivation layer was deposited on thin Mg-Ag cathode layer at substrate temperature below $50\;^{\circ}C$ without a noticeable plasma damage. In addition, substrate-mask chucking system equipped with a mechanical mask aligner enabled us to pattern the $SiN_x$ passivation layer without conventional lithography processes. Even at low substrate temperature, a $SiN_x$ passivation layer prepared by ICP-CVD shows a good moisture resistance and transparency of $5{\times}10^{-3}g/m^2/day$ and 92 %, respectively. This indicates that the ICP-CVD system is a promising methode to substitute conventional plasma enhanced CVD (PECVD) in thin film passivation process.

  • The white-light-emitting organic LED with two-wavelength was fabricated using blue emitting material(DPVBi) and a series of orange color fluorescent dye(Rubrene) by vacuum evaporation processes. The basic structure of white-light-emitting OLED was ITO/NPB(150$\AA$)/DPVBi(150$\AA$)/Alq$_3$:Rubrene(150$\AA$)/BCP(100$\AA$)/Alq$_3$(150$\AA$)/Al(600$\AA$). The changes of the CIE coordiante strongly depended on the doping concentration of Rubrene and the thickness of NPB layer. We obtained the white-light-emitting OLED close to the pure white color light and the CIE coordinate of the device was (0.315, 0.330) at applied voltage of 13V when the doping concentration of Rubrene was 0.5wt% and the thickness of NPB layer is 200$\AA$. At a current of 100mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$, the quantum efficiency was 0.35%.
