The purpose of this research is to quantify the compliance of on-road emission from a light duty diesel vehicle, based on a comparison to emission regulation standard. $NO_x$, CO and THC emissions were measured using a portable device on a selected real-world driving route with a length of approximately 22 km. On-road measurements were repeated by 10 times on a same route to reflect variability in traffic conditions. A test route was divided into 22 road links with length of 1 km to analyze emission results with higher spatial resolution. The average emissions of $NO_x$, CO and THC over total travel distance, which is approximately 220 km, were quantified to be in compliance with emission regulation standards. Under higher spatial resolution, $NO_x$ concentration exceeded a standard in 92 links out of 220 links. The extended time in stop period and the stop-and-go driving cycle were identified as two important reasons for increased $NO_x$ emissions in observed cases. Heavy traffics showed higher $NO_x$ emissions than free flow. These results indicate that the real-world vehicle emissions might exceed the compliance level associate with traffic conditions. Another interesting observation of this research is that the on-road emission characteristics can be independent to the average speed of road links with higher spatial resolution. Variability in on-road emission might not be fully described by solely relying on an average speed, because variability in traffic conditions and road conditions can influence on real-world vehicle emissions.
Growing international concern about environmental issues in recent years has led to new proposals for strengthening exhaust emission standards and fuel economy requirements throughout the world. The low emission vehicle(LEV) standards drawn up by the California Air Resources Board(CARB) in the U.S.A are noticeably stringent To cope with this regulation, a reduction of HC emission is the most important challenge for the automotive industry because HC emission levels are severer than any other components emission levels. In this paper, the apparatus for visulalizing the wall film flow in a intake manifold and the spark plug with optical fiber for detecting the signal from diffusion flame are developed to mal,e the HC formation mechanism clear. High speed camera system is also used to elucidate the correlation wall film flow and the diffusion flame. Using these methods, the effect of fuel injection systems such as injection direction, spray angle, atomised injection on HC emission levels is investigated. Consequently, the optimal fuel injection conditions for minimizing the wall film flow and reducing the HC emission are found through this research.
Hydrocarbons which are the main sources of VOCs from motor vehicles are emitted not only from the engine exhaust gas but also from evaporation of the fuel in storage and supplying systems. Evaporative emissions from gasoline fuel systems could be classified by diurnal, hotsoak and running loss. Diurnal loss test procedures are different as countries. Korea introduced new evaporative regulation in 2009 with 24hour VT-shed test procedure and relaxed emission standards. The estimations on different test procedures in this study show that the new Korean regulation get a little more severe than before and the 2 day diurnal loss test of U.S. is the most severe. So the test procedures as well as the stronger standards should be considered in the next evaporative emission regulation to reduce VOCs from motor vehicles. The important parameters to affect evaporative emissions are air and fuel temperature and fuel vapor pressure. Diurnal loss increases exponentially as rising air temperature and vapor pressure. The effects of vapor pressure on running loss are different as the capacities of canisters. Tests with simulating real temperature and driving conditions show that hydrocarbons in evaporative emissions could be more than those in exhaust gas in summer season because of the higher air temperature.
This study analyzed the regulations concerning odor management or control in Korea, Japan, and developed countries such as USA and Germany. The Korean restriction standards and measurement methods for offensive odor substances are very similar to the Japanese standards and methods promulgated in 1976. Japan promulgated the odor control act and the specific measurement methods of the offensive odor substances in 1973. In Japan, currently, the local governments can establish their own odor restriction areas and proclaim their own standards suitable for their situations. Also, Japan has more strict regulations and more offensive odor substances to be monitored than Korea. The restriction standards of odor in German is quite similar to the permissible limits and standards of air pollutants at emission sources in Korea. Many states in USA are adopting their own restriction standards and measurement methods, e.q., the ambient air pollution standards, organic functionstest methods by dilation, and establishment and addition of air pollution control equipment at emission sources. Finally, this study analyzed the problems of the regulations, standards, and measurement methods concerning the Korean offensive odor management. Since the direct organic fuctions measurement(DOFMM) method is depending upon the personal sensitives of odor substances, the measurement odor value can be equivocal. That is, the odor measurement value by an examines can differ from that by the other examines. Also, there can be conflicts with the measured odor values depending upon the applied measurement methods, e.q., the DOFMM, the dilation method, and the instrumental analysis method.
This study was designed to investigate the emission characteristics of unregulated pollutants (Aldehyde, VOCs, PAHs) as well as regulated pollutants (CO, HC, NOx and PM) from diesel medium-duty trucks. The emission characteristics of unregulated and regulated pollutants were assessed based on regulation standards (EURO 4 and EURO 5) and intake weight (2.5 ton and 5 ton). The results show that unregulated and regulated pollutants remained almost unchanged at higher speeds but decreased at below 23.5 km/h. Reduction in unregulated and regulated pollutants was noticeable in vehicles of recent regulation standards and light intake weight. The analysis of aldehyde using UPLC showed that formaldehyde and acetaldehyde of aldehyde were most dominant. The GC/MS analysis showed that benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene of VOCs was over 80% followed by toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene and benzene. In addition, the analysis of PAHs using GC/TOF-MS indicated that bi- and tricyclic aromatic ring of aromatic compounds was 73% and 53% at 2.5 ton and 5 ton vehicles, respectively. The results of this study will be contributed to establish HAPs inventory.
Climate change is one of the biggest dangers facing all living creatures in the earth. It has been understood that emissions of greenhouse gases from human activity is the cause of climate change. Cars are responsible for around 12% of total EU emissions of CO2, the main greenhouse gas. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC or FCCC) is an international environmental treaty adopted at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) on 9 May, 1992, which entered into force on 21 March 1994. The European Commission first adopted a Community Strategy to reduce CO2 emissions from cars in 1995. On 19 December 2007, the European Commission proposed "Proposal for Setting emission performance standards for new passenger cars to reduce CO2 emissions", which was adopted on 23 April 2009 as "Regulation (EC) No 443/2009". Prior to submitting the Proposal, the European Commission performed impact assessment and prepared impact assessment report which was reviewed by the Impact Assessment Board. The objective of this Regulation is to set emission performance standards for new passenger cars registered in the Community, which forms part of the Community's integrated approach to reducing CO2 emissions from light-duty vehicles while ensuring the proper functioning of the internal market. In the event that a manufacturer fails to meet its target, it will be required to pay an excess emissions premium in respect of each calendar year from 2012 onwards. On 11 March 2014, Regulation (EC) No 333/2014 amending Regulation (EC) No 443/2009 was adopted. Regulation (EC) No 333/2014 amends Regulation (EC) No 443/2009 to implement the modalities of meeting the 95g CO2/km target for new passenger cars to be reached in 2020. As industry benefits from indications of the regulatory regime that would apply beyond 2020, the Regulation includes a further review to take place by, at the latest, 31 December 2014.
Looming global environmental pollution problems around the world movement to minimize the environmental pollution is actively taking place. International Maritime Organization (IMO) a significant portion of the marine pollution by exhaust gases emitted from vessel considered, and accordingly developed around the ship and ship-related environmental regulations, emission standards are going to strengthen gradually, the development of environmentally friendly vessels and equipment is proceeding actively.
Modern diesel vehicle has to comply with the EURO IV, V regulation with low level of particulate matter and smoke emission Moreover, emission standards of each countries are becoming stringent in advanced countries such as USA and Europe. Because Bio-diesel is similar to diesel fuel, it is essential to judge the environmental and health effects deriving from the use of Bio-diesel in diesel engine. The deterioration characteristics of emission in accordance with aging vehicles must be regulated for Bio-diesel. Therefore, under 1200 driving hours, 220,000km driving distance condition and full load, the deterioration characteristics of emission were estimated. We could reduce sulfur contents of fuel, particulate matter and smoke emission by using Bio-diesel and conform the influence of engine performance, emission, and fuel consumption by Bio-diesel deterioration
Air pollutant emissions from airplane engines are estimated about 2 to 4 % of mobile source of USA and European countries which is not a large portion of current air pollution. But the passengers and airfreights are continuously increasing 5 to 7% annually and potential demands of air transportation services come to present, it could effect air pollutant emissions of USA will increase within 15 years. In case of our country, there has been continuous increase of air transportation service due to considerable economic growth in recent years and increase of air pollutant emissions of major international airports has followed. Rapid increase of air transportation due to launching of Inchon International Airport could effect air pollution dominantly. By this circumstance environmental specialist as well as mass communication raised necessity of air pollutant emission regulation from airplane engines. It is estimated that air pollutant emissions from airplane engines in our country is 2.7% of automobile sources, 10,809 ton, which is the same level as USA and European countries. It is increased by 12,2% compared to air pollutant emissions during 1996 and it will be increased more than a half of current air pollutant emission within 15 years due to our country's economic condition. Therefore implementation of airplane engine emissions regulation as well as test standards and accumulation of technology about characteristics of airplane engine emission and reduction method are needed. And continuous estimation of air pollutant emission from airplane engines and monitoring of increment as well as development of countermeasures by long term are necessary.
