Effects of Surface Termination on Directional Emission from Photonic Crystal Waveguides

  • We numerically investigate by the finite-difference time-domain method the effects of surface termination on directional emission exiting a photonic crystal waveguide. The directed power and far-field beam profile for the original proposal [E. Moreno et al., Phys. Rev. B 69, 121402 (2004)] and its enhancement [S. K. Morrison et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 86, 081110 (2005)] are computed for different values of some important parameters. We find another surface termination condition with a positive surface displacement in the structure of the original proposal which has a negative surface displacement. Our surface termination is more effective than the original structure, and nearly as effective as the termination for the enhancement, for directional emission. Besides, our termination is simpler than that for the enhancement. We confirm the effectiveness of directional emission from our termination in its far-field beam profile, radiation intensity distribution, and additionally the wave-vector space representation by the Fourier analysis.

  • The effect of $Y^{3+}$ addition to $SrTiO_3:Pr^{3+}$ on the photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence was studied. We discovered that light emitting levels of $Pr^{3+}$ vary by addition of $Y^{3+}$. In $(Sr_{1-x}Y_x)TiO_3:Pr^{3+}$, both the green and red emission are discovered while the red emission prevails in $Sr(Ti_{1-x}Y_x)O_3:Pr^{3+}$ . $Sr(Ti_{1-x}Y_x)O_3:Pr^{3+}$ shows enhancement of red emission by two kinds of enhancement process.

  • Field emission characteristics of carbon nanotubes(CNTs) on four kinds of metallic substrates have been investigated under the irradiation of a laser. The field emission measurement reveals that after laser irradiation the current was increased and new humps at the field emission current was found. The current enhancement was thought to have occurred due to the fact that the electrical contact between CNTs and metals was improved due to the irradiation of the laser.

Generation Rescheduling Based on Energy Margin Sensitivity for Transient Stability Enhancement

  • This paper presents a generation rescheduling method for the enhancement of transient stability in power systems. The priority and the candidate generators for rescheduling are calculated by using the energy margin sensitivity. The generation rescheduling formulates the Lagrangian function with the fuel cost and emission such as NOx and SOx from power plants. The generation rescheduling searches for the solution that minimizes the Lagrangian function by using the Newton’s approach. While the Pareto optimum in the fuel cost and emission minimization has a drawback of finding a number of non-dominated solutions, the proposed approach can explore the non-inferior solutions of the multiobjective optimization problem more efficiently. The method proposed is applied to a 4-machine 6-bus system to demonstrate its effectiveness.

  • The effects of change in the component of bonding materials in carbon nanotube cathode (CNT-cathode) on field enhancement and field emission characteristics were investigated. The field enhancement factor$\beta$ was dependent on the electrical conductivity of the bonding materials. The use of frit glass as a bonding material showed a higher field enhancement factor and better field emission characteristics than an Ag paste. The reason for why the frit glass showed better field emission characteristics can be summarized as follows. First, a frit glass improves the real aspect ratio of CNTs compared to an Ag paste. Second, the number of CNTs in CNT-cathodes is considerably reduced because the CNTs were extensively oxidized during $390^{\circ}C$ heat treatment in air atmosphere in the case of Ag paste.

  • By applying a critical field treatment instead of the conventional surface treatments such as soft rubber roller, ion beam irradiation, adhesive taping, and laser irradiation, electron emission properties of screen-printed carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were enhanced and investigated based on the emission current-voltage characteristics through scanning electron microscopy. After nanotube emitters were activated at the applied electric-field of 2.5 V/um, the electron emission current density with good uniform emission sites reached the value of 2.13 mA/$cm^2$ , which is 400 times higher than that of the untreated sample, and the turn-on voltage decreased markedly from 700 to 460 V. In addition, enhancement of the alignment of CNTs to the vertical direction was observed.

  • 미세먼지 감축에 대한 사회적 요구 증가와 강화되는 대기오염물질 배출허용기준을 충족시키기 위해 구조적 제약조건을 갖는 500 MW급 석탄화력발전소 탈황설비의 성능개선 방안을 제시하였다. 탈황설비 흡수탑을 통과하는 배기가스가 선회하도록 내부 설비를 개조하여 난류를 형성시켜 물질전달효율을 증가시키고 반응 면적 및 시간을 증가시킴으로써 황산화물 저감 및 먼지 포집 능력을 향상시킬 수 있었다. 개선결과 황산화물 제거효율은 91.61%에서 98.43%로 향상되었고 먼지 제거성능은 77.4%에서 87.08%로 향상되었다. 배출농도는 황산화물 7.85 ppm, 먼지 4.67 mg/㎥이 배출되어 2023년의 대기오염물질 배출허용기준인 황산화물 25 ppm, 먼지 5 mg/㎥을 만족하는 수준이다. 본 연구의 성능 개선 방식은 유사한 제약조건을 갖는 다른 석탄화력발전소에도 효과적으로 적용될 수 있으리라 기대된다.

부상된 수소난류확산화염에서 동축공기의 음향가진에 의한 NOx 저감 (NOx Reduction by Acoustic Excitation on Coaxial Air Stream in Lifted Turbulent Hydrogen Non-Premixed Flame)

  • The effects of acoustic excitation of coaxial air on mixing enhancement and reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) emission were investigated. A compression driver was attached to the coaxial air supply tube to impose excitation. Measurements of NOx emission with frequency sweeping were performed to observe the trend of NOx emission according to the fuel and air flow conditions and to inquire about the effective excitation frequency for reducing NOx. Then, Schlieren photographs were taken to visualize the flow field and to study the effect of excitation. In addition, phase-locked particle image velocimetry (PIV) was performed to acquire velocity field for each case and to investigate the effect of vortices more clearly. Direct photographs and OH chemiluminescence photographs were taken to study the variation of flame length and reaction zone. It was found that acoustic forcing frequencies close to the resonance frequencies of coaxial air supply tube could reduce NOx emission. This NOx reduction was influenced by mixing enhancement due to large-scale vortices formed by fluctuation of coaxial air jet velocity.

Properties of Surface Modes Used for Directional Emission from Photonic Crystal Waveguides

  • Directional emission of light exiting a photonic crystal waveguide by a coherent action of radiative surface modes was recently demonstrated, and subsequently the substantial enhancement of the directional emission was achieved by engineering the surface and adjusting relevant parameters. Here we present the analysis of surface modes causing the enhanced emission by the plane wave expansion method and the finite-difference time-domain method. In particular, surface band structures are calculated for nonradiative and radiative surface modes, respectively, and intensity profiles of some representative modes for nonradiative and radiative cases are given.
