  • We have succeeded in synthesizing vertically aligned thin multi-walled carbon nanotubes (VA thin-MWCNTs) by a catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CCVD) method onto Fe/Al thin film deposited on a Si wafers using an optimum amount of hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) additive. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images revealed that the as-synthesized CNT arrays were vertically well-oriented perpendicular to the substrate with relatively uniform length. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) observations indicated that the as-grown CNTs were nearly catalyst-free thin-MWCNTs with small outer diameters of less than 10nm. The average wall number is about 5. We suggested a possible growth mechanism of the VA thin-MWCNT arrays. The VA thin-MWCNTs showed a low turn-on electric field of about $1.1\;V/{\mu}m$ at a current density of $0.1\;{\mu}A/cm^2$ and a high emission current density about $2.5\;mA/cm^2$ at a bias field of $2.7\;V/{\mu}m$. Moreover, the VA thin-MWCNTs presented better field emission stability without degradation over 20 hours (h) at the emission current density of about $1\;mA/cm^2$.

  • To improve the performance of organic thin film transistor, we investigated the properties of gate insulator's surface according to the leakage current by I-V measurement. The surface was treated by the dilute n-octadecyltrichlorosilane solution. The alkyl group of n-octadecyltrichlorosilane induced the electron tunneling and the electron tunneling current caused the breakdown at high electric field, consequently shifting the breakdown voltage. The 0.5% sample with an electron-rich group was found to have a large leakage current and a low barrier height because of the effect of an energy barrier lowered by, thermionic current, which is called the Schottky contact. The surface properties of the insulator were analyzed by I-V measurement using the effect of Poole-Frankel emission.

  • We have investigated current-voltage-luminance characteristics of organic light-emitting diodes based on TPD/Alq$_3$organics depending on the application of forward-backward bias voltage. Luminance-voltage characteristics and luminous efficiency were measured at the same time when the current-voltage characteristics were measured. We have observed that the current-voltage characteristics shows a reversible current maxima at low voltage, which is possibly not related to the emission from Alq$_3$. Current-voltage-luminance characteristics imply that the conduction luminance mechanism at low voltage is different from that of high voltage one.

  • In this study, we will describe a new design of carbon nanotubes tip. Single-walled carbon nanotubes produced using high-pressure CO over Fe particles (HiPCO) at CNI, Houston, TX used in this study. These tips were manufactured by employing a drawing technique using glass puller. Field electron microscopies with tips (cathode) to screen (Anode) separation of ~10 mm was used to characterize the electron emitters. The system was evacuated down to base pressure of (${\sim}10^{-8}$ mbar) when baked at up to (${\sim}200^{\circ}C$) over night. An electron field emission patterns, as well as current versus voltage characteristics and Fowler-Nordheim plots, are discussed.

  • Carbon nanofibers could be selectively formed at the groove area of the MgO substrate using microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition system. Iridium metal was used as a catalyst layer for the formation of the carbon nanofibers. The growth direction of the carbon nanofibers was vertical to the substrate surface. The selectively grown iridium-catalyzed carbon nanofibers show around $1.8V/{\mu}m$ turn-on voltage and $1.0\;mA/cm^2$ field emission current density at $2.65\;V/{\mu}m$ in the field emission measurement.

  • An ultra-sharp tungsten electrode for field emission was manufactured by using an electrochemical etching method, and its beam characteristics were investigated. KOH and NaOH were the electrolytes used in this research, and the taper length of the tip varied form 150 $\mu\textrm{m}$ to 250 $\mu\textrm{m}$ according to the applied voltage and the concentration of the electrolyte. The electron-beam stability was measured to be within 5% for a total emission current of 5 ${\mu}\textrm{A}$ during 4 hours of operation, and the Ignition voltages were found to be ∼300 V. The tip radius was experimentally found to be 250${\AA}$ from a linear fitting of Fowler-Nordheim plots, which was in remarkably good agreement with that of the image size from scanning ion-microscopy.

  • Photoemission is a process in which photons are converted into free electrons. Photocathodes are the typical materials for the process. They emit electrons when a light is irradiated upon. The traditional method of manufacturing photocathodes is complicated, requires specialized equipment, and is limited very small sized samples. $Cs_3Sb$ photocathode was formed on a substrate in $N_2$ atmospheric conditions. The photocathode formation was a gas phase reaction with the substrate. Vacuum devices were made to test electron emission characteristics of the formed photocathode. Visible light of wavelength 475 nm was used for the primary light source. The results showed high current density and long term stability of the photoelectron emission.

  • A Nano-tip as a cold field emitter for inducing a field emission current has manufactured in many ways. In the paper, the electrochemical etching method is used. Thus, in order to optimize the final shape as the field emitter, the reliable fabrication system for electrochemical etching was constructed. In addition, the effective parameters such as applied voltage, submerged length, meniscus height, electrolyte concentration and environmental condition(vibration, humidity, cut-off time) have investigated in detail. By controlling the parameters, reliable tungsten tip for field emitter was fabricated. And the fabricated tungsten tip was evaluated optically. Finally, the very sharp apex of the tungsten tip was observed with scanning electron microscope.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish the flame structure and NOx emission characteristics of the swirl flow coaxial diffusion combustion in the model gas turbine combustor. The mean temperature, ion currents and NOx emission measurement technique showed the effect of equivalence ratio into flame length and flame stability. As a result of this study, NOx emission was increased by increasing the equivalence ratio, and the peak value of the NOx was appeared near the flame front.

  • This paper presents the principle and fabrication of a novel micro mass spectrometer and emission test of hot electron for ionization. A micro mass spectrometer consists of a micro ion source and a micro ion separator. The micro ion source consists of a hot filament and grid electrodes. Electrons emitted from a hot filament are to ionize some sample molecules. The ions are accelerated to an ion detector by an electric field. Mass can be analyzed by using the time of fight depending on the mass-to-charge ratio. The current of hot electron emission from the hot filament is measured for various input voltages.
