  • A magnetic cataclysmic variable has a rotating magnetic white dwarf which accretes matter from its late type companion. Kim & Beuermann (1995) presented a phenomenological model of the accretion from its surrounding structure e.g., a disk into the magnetosphere of the white dwarf, and presented results for the spin modulated X-ray spectrum and light curves. Using this model, we calculate the optical continuum and line emission which result from reprocessing of X-rays in the accretion stream within the magnetosphere. Penning (1985) suggested the observed spin-modulated radial-velocity variations might result from reprocession of X-rays in the disk. We, however, find the radiation can be originated from the magnetosphere accretion stream. We use the same geometrical model to calculate the optical and the X-ray behaviour. The results from the two wavelength bands are internally consistent. We conclude that this approach will increase the diagnostic accuracies of the results.

  • Due to its efficient red emission, $Eu^{3+}$ ion has been doped in various host materials. $GdCa_4B_3O_{10}:Eu^{3+}$ phosphor for red emission has been prepared by solid state reaction. Photoluminescence properties for the phosphor under UV and VUV excitation were investigated. The $GdCa_4B_3O_{10}:Eu^{3+}$ phosphor under both excitation conditions shows typical red emission spectrum centered at 611 nm with several weak peaks due to energy transfer from $^5D_O\;to\;^7F_J(J=1,2,3,4)$ of $Eu^{3+}$ ion. On the other hand, the activator content exhibiting the concentration quenching under UV and VUV irradiation is 10 mole% and 2.5 mole%, respectively.

  • Two novel antenna complexes of $Eu^{III}$ with 1-naphthoic acid (NA) as primary ligand and two aromatic N-donor ligands namely N-hexyl-N-(pyridin-2-yl) pyridin-2-amine (1) and 4-((dipyridin-2-ylamino)methyl)benzoic acid (2) have been synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. The room-temperature (298 K) photoluminescence spectrum of $Eu^{III}$ complexes composed of typical line like emissions, assigned to transitions between the first excited state $^5D_0$ to the $^7F_J$ (J = 0-4), resulting in red emission along with the residual emission from the 1-naphthoic acid moiety in the blue region. The determined CIE color coordinate value for the complex 2 is (x = 0.36, y = 0.34), which is in white region.

  • We investigated photoluminescence characteristics of ZnO nano needle-like rods grown on a c-plane $AL_2O_3$ substrate by the hot wall epitaxy method. The nano-rods were vertically well aligned along the ZnO c-axis. The diameters of the ZnO nano-rods ranged from 20 nm to 30 nm and their lengths were between 600 and 700 nm. In the photoluminescence spectrum at 10 K, the exciton emission bound to the neutral donor dominated while defect related emission was weakly observed. With a further increase of temperature, the free exciton emission appeared and eventually became dominant at room temperature.

  • The object of the present work is the natural frequency analysis of subambient pressure tri-pad and pico sliders. Head/disk interaction during start/stop and constant speed were detected by using the acoustic emission (AE) test system. The frequency spectrum analysis is performed using the AE signal obtained during the head/disk interaction. The FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) analysis of the AE signals is used to understand the interaction between the AE signal and the state of contact. Natural frequency analysis was performed using the Ansys program. The results indicate acceptable accordance of finite element calculation results with the experimental results.

  • Research during the past several years has established the effectiveness of acoustic emission (AE)-based sensing methodologies for machine condition analysis and process. AE has been proposed and evaluated for a variety of sensing tasks as well as for use as a technique for quantitative studies of manufacturing process. STD11 has been known as difficult-to-cut materials. For this study, the micro-grooving machine was developed. The experiments were performed using diamond blade and CBN blade f3r machining STD11. Evaluating the machining conditions, frequency spectrum analysis of acoustic emission (AE) signals according to each conditions were applied.

  • The photoluminescence of calixarene crystals has been studied as functions of temperature, time, and concentration. The vibronic bands shift to longer wavelength and become significantly sharper as temperature decreases. The experimental results r eveal that the structural transformation occur during the annealing process. Time-resolved spectra of calixarene at 12 K are monitored. Spectral features, which demonstrate characteristic of energy transfer processes, are not observed. The depopulation of excited state density is mainly controlled by unimolecular decay process dominating other decay processes. The lifetime was found to be 2.6 $\pm$ 0.1 ns. For the case of calixarene mixed with naphthalene, the fluorescence spectrum shows that the band centered at 340 nm lies 2840 $cm^{-1}$ below the relatively broad 310 nm band found for calixarene crystals. The spectra also exhibit that the emission intensity increases with increasing calixarene concentration. The results are evident that the calixarene emission is quenched by the naphthalene. Phosphorescence of calixarene mixed with naphthalene crystals is observed to determine whether the emission is due to naphthalene. The phosphorescence peaks were compared with the ground-state vibrational frequencies of naphthalene and found to be in good agreement. The results indicate that inter-molecular energy transfer occurs between calixarene and naphthalene.

  • Amorphous fluorocarbon (a-C:F) is of interest for low dielectric interlayer material, but in this work we applied this material to FED field emitter. N-doped a-C:F films were deposited by inductively coupled plasma chemical vapor deposition (ICPCVD). The Raman spectra were measured to study the film structure and inter-band optical absorption coefficients were measured using Perkin-Elmer UV-VIS-IR spectrophotometer and optical band gap was obtained using Tauc's plot. XPS spectrum and AFM image were investigated to study bond structure and surface morphology. Current-electric field(I-E) characteristic of the film was measured for the characterization of electron emission properties. The optimum doping concentration was found to be [N2]/[CF4]=9% in the gas phase. The turn-on field and the emission current density at $[N_2]/[CF_4]$=9% were found to be 7.34V/$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 16 $\mu\textrm{A}/\textrm{cm}^2$ at 12.8V/$\mu\textrm{m}$, respectively.

  • We report on preparation of $CaBaSiS_4:Eu^{2+}$ material by an advanced chemical solution method and fluorescent properties of the new material. The emission spectrum of $CaBaSiS_4:Eu^{2+}$ has the main peak centered at 598 nm, with the corresponding excitation maximum at around 420 nm. The strongest emission intensity of this material approached 96% compared to one of the best commercially available YAG:$Ce^{3+}$ phosphor.

  • The high quality and a nearly stoichometric growth of $Cd_{1-y} Zn_y$/Te(y=0.04) epilayers have been successfully grown on GaAs substrate by hot wall epitaxy (HWE) by optimizing the growth condition including the preheating treatment and Cd reservoir temperature. The relationship between quality and thickness was examined and best value of FWHM from X-ray rocking curve of 121 arcsec are obtained. Also, emission peaks related to the recombination of free excitons such as the ground state and the first excited state were observed in the PL spectrum at 4.2K. The ($A^0$, X) emission related to Cd vacancy and deep level emission was not measured. These results indicated that the grown CZT/GaAs epilayer was high qualify and purity.
