In this paper, we analyze theoritically the propagation and radiation characteristics for elliptical corrugated waveguides. The solutions of wave equations in an elliptic cylinder system are obtained in terms of Mathieu functions of 1st and 2nd kind. The electromagnetic fields in the elliptical corrugated waveguide can be represented by series and products of angular and radial Mathieu functions. By using impedence matching at the boundary between the inner region and the slot region, characteristic equations are derived. Then the characteristic equation is solved for $HE_{11}$ mode which is dominant mode in the elliptical corrugated waveguide and the fields in the aperture is calculated. And the propagation pattern for the elliptical corrugated waveguides is calculated through the field equivalence principle.
This paper proposes a new segmentation method of human races from grey scale images with clutter using a racial template and elliptical structure of the human head. Face detection technique can be applied in many areas of image processing such as face recognition, composition and computer graphics. Until now, many researches about face detection have been conducted, and applications in more complicated conditions are increasing. The general case is more in a complicated background than in a simple one, and a image with not only one face. Research and development of face detection in such a general case are growing rapidly, and the necessity for that is increasing continuously. Sirohey proposed a face detection method using linearized elliptical equation. The method designed in this paper is improved to be applicable even in the more general cases like where the face is much smaller than the image size and with many faces in one image using template matching and elliptic fitting technique.

This investigation was carried out for the purpose of studying the turbulent flow and mixing characteristics after collision of two jets depending upon the cross angle variations. For effectuating this experimental study, a subsonic wind tunnel and a constant temperature type two channel hot-wire anemometer system have been utilized. The jets issuing from two nozzles have same Reynolds numbers and their cross angle was variable. After collision of two jets, the cross section of the mixing flow, mean and fluctuating velocities and Reynolds stresses have been measured, and analyzed comparing them with semi-empirical equations. It was found that the nondirectional contour of the cross section agreed well with an elliptic formula and the mean velocities along the centerline had a good similarity independent of cross angle variations. The distributions of U over bar-components measured in the Y direction have a good similarity and agree well with semi-empirical equations of Hinze and Gortler. The Reynolds stresses of u'v' over bar on the Y axis show a similar distributions and their agreement with the theoretical curve is remarkable but those of u'w' over bar measured along the Z axis are randomly scattered.

This paper deals with spacecraft intercept problem on non-coplanar elliptical obit considering J2 perturbation. This disturbance addressed in this work is a major factor changing the trajectory of a spacecraft orbiting the Earth. To resolve this issue, a real-time intercept method is proposed. This method is based on the optimization problem which consist of the equation of motion considering spherical earth and impulse, and the optimal solution numerically obtained is set as the direction of the thrust of the interceptor. The position error is resolved by iteratively solving the optimization problem and modifying the direction of thrust of interceptor. The proposed method in this paper is verified by using various numerical examples.

This study deals with jet impingement, which is extensively used in the process industries to achieve intense heating, cooling or drying rates and also widely employed as a test flow for turbulent models due to its complex flow configuration, on a flat plate by numerical methods. In this calculation, the finite volume method was employed to solve the Navier-stokes equation based on the non-orthogonal coordinate with non-staggered variable arrangement. To get a better understanding for the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics of the turbulent jet impingements, $k-{\varepsilon}-{\overline{v^{'2}}}$ turbulent model was adapted and compared with the experimental data and the result of standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model. Numerical calculations were carried out with various flow rates, nozzle to plate distances. In the case of the axisymmetric jet impingement on a flat plate, $k-{\varepsilon}-{\overline{v^{'2}}}$ turbulent model showed better agreement with the experimental data than the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model in the prediction of the mean velocity profiles, the turbulent velocity profiles. the turbulent shear stress and the heat transfer rate. The highest heat transfer rate can be obtained when the impingement occurs within the potential core..
In this study, the performance evaluation of a conventional wave resonator at the entrance of a port or a pier against secondary undulation has been performed using 2D hydrodynamic modeling within port. A wave resonator has been designed for the attenuation of the secondary undulation induced by the long-periodic waves. The controlled performance of the wave resonator has been numerically investigated for CGWAVE MODULE of finite-element model of SMS (Surface water Modeling System) based on the elliptic mild-slope wave equation. SMS was verified though the comparisons with analytical solution performed by Ippen and Goda (1963). Also, It was confirmed that a wave resonator of a rectangular model harbor is effective enough to control the secondary undulation when it compares variation of water level with the case of no resonance system. From the above results, amplification phenomenon induced by long-period waves transferred from 1900 sec to 2100 sec when it applied a wave resonator in Busan Gamcheon Port which is a deep-sea. And it was confirmed that a wave resonator of Pohang New Port attenuates largely long-period waves which are within the range of 300 sec induced by long-period motion of the moored ship.

In this paper, an impulsive rendezvous problem by using minimum energy of spacecraft in different orbits is addressed. In particular, the orbits considered in this paper are the general orbits including the elliptic orbit, while most of the orbits considered in the literature have been restricted within co-planar or circular orbits. The constraints for solving this optimization problem are the Kepler's equation formulated with the universal variable, and the final position and velocity of two spacecraft. Also, the Lagrange coefficients, sometimes called as f and g solution, are used to describe the orbit transfer. The proposed method technique is demonstrated through numerical simulation by considering the minimum energy, and both the minimum energy and the wait time, respectively. Finally, it is also verified by comparing with the Hohmann transfer known as the minimum energy trajectory. Although a closed-form solution cannot be obtained, it shows that the suggested technique can provide a new insight to solve various orbital transfer problems.
Offshore structures are exposed to low- and high-frequency responses due to environmental loads, and fatigue damage models are used to calculate the fatigue damage from these. In this study, we tried to optimize the main parameters used in fatigue damage calculation to derive a new fatigue damage model. A total of 162 bi-modal spectra using the elliptic equation were defined to describe the response of offshore structures. To calculate the fatigue damage from the spectra, time series were generated from the spectra using the inverse Fourier transform, and the rain-flow counting method was applied. The considered optimization variables were the size of the frequency increments, ratio of the time increment, and number of repetitions of the time series. In order to obtain optimized values, the fatigue damage was calculated using the parameter values proposed in previous work, and the fatigue damage was calculated by increasing or decreasing the proposed values. The results were compared, and the error rate was checked. Based on the test results, new values were found for the size of the frequency increment and number of time series iterations. As a validation, the fatigue damage of an actual tension spectrum found using the new proposed values and fatigue damage found using the previously proposed method were compared. In conclusion, we propose a new optimized calculation process that is faster and more accurate than the existed method.
Many studies reveal that during destructive earthquakes, most of the structures enter the inelastic phase. The amount of hysteretic energy in a structure is considered as an important criterion in structure design and an important indicator for the degree of its damage or vulnerability. The hysteretic energy value wasted after the structure yields is the most important component of the energy equation that affects the structures system damage thereof. Controlling this value of energy leads to controlling the structure behavior. Here, for the first time, the hysteretic behavior and energy dissipation capacity are assessed at presence of elliptical braced resisting frames (ELBRFs), through an experimental study and numerical analysis of FEM. The ELBRFs are of lateral load systems, when located in the middle bay of the frame and connected properly to the beams and columns, in addition to improving the structural behavior, do not have the problem of architectural space in the bracing systems. The energy dissipation capacity is assessed in four frames of small single-story single-bay ELBRFs at ½ scale with different accessories, and compared with SMRF and X-bracing systems. The frames are analyzed through a nonlinear FEM and a quasi-static cyclic loading. The performance features here consist of hysteresis behavior, plasticity factor, energy dissipation, resistance and stiffness variation, shear strength and Von-Mises stress distribution. The test results indicate that the good behavior of the elliptical bracing resisting frame improves strength, stiffness, ductility and dissipated energy capacity in a significant manner.
Numerical analysis using 3D finite element program (PLAXIS 3D) evaluated the interaction of soil - pile structure under dynamic surface loading. The dynamic p-y curve of the 1-g shaking table experiment by numerical analysis was calculated, and the parametric studies were presented by considering the pile-soil condition, the pile tip condition, and the loading condition. The frequency of 1.4 Hz is almost equal to the natural frequency of the pile - soil system. The p and y values of resonance phenomenon are significantly different from the results of other frequencies. The results can be summarized by a third order polynomial function representing the trend line in the p-y curve. In the case of a single pile, the shape of the dominant curve was found to be an ellipse by mathematical proof. The elliptic equation can be used for the dynamic design or analysis of soil-pile system.
