  • In the process of the probabilistic-based design on the coastal structures, the probability density function (pdf) of tidal elevation data is assumed as the normal distribution function. The pdf shape of tidal elevation data, however, is better-fitted to the double-peak normal distribution function and the equivalent mean and standard deviation (SD) estimation process based on the equivalent normal distribution is required. The equivalent mean and SD (equivalent parameters) are different with the mean and SD (normal parameters) estimated in the condition that the pdf of tidal elevation is normal distribution. In this study, the difference, i.e., estimation error, between equivalent parameters and normal parameters is compared and analysed. The difference is increased as the tidal elevation and its range are increased. The mean and SD differences in the condition of the tidal elevation is ${\pm}400cm$ are above 100 cm and about 80~100 cm, respectively, in Incheon station. Whereas, the mean and SD differences in the condition of the tidal elevation is ${\pm}60cm$ are very small values in the range of 2~4 cm, in Pohang station.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of hydraulic behavior of the natural channel flow according to the temporal classification mode, and thus propose the hydraulic analysis method for future channel design. For analysis, the temporal flow characteristics of the channel section was divided into the steady flow and the unsteady flow. For hydraulic analysis, the HEC-RAS model, which is a one-dimensional numerical analysis model, and the SMS-RAM2 model, which is a two-dimensional model, were used and the factors used for analysis of hydraulic characteristics were flood elevation and flow rate. The flow state was analyzed on the basis of the one-dimensional steady flow and unsteady flow for review. In the unsteady flow analysis the flow rate changed by $(-)0.16%{\sim}(+)0.26%$, and the flood elevation varied by $(-)0.35%{\sim}(+)0.51%$ as compared to the values in the steady flow analysis. Given these results, in the one-dimensional flow analysis based on the unsteady flow the flood elevation and flow rate were greater than when the analysis was done on the basis of the steady flow. The flow state was analyzed on the basis of the two-dimensional steady flow and unsteady flow. In the unsteady flow analysis the flow rate varied by $(-)0.16%{\sim}(+)1.08%$, and the flood elevation changed by $(-)0.24%{\sim}(+)0.41%$ as compared to the values in the steady flow analysis. Given these analysis results, in the two dimensional flow analysis based on the unsteady flow, the flood elevation and flow rate were greater than when the analysis was done on the basis of the steady flow.

  • During preliminary design of a RC building located in a seismic area, having quick but reliable analytical measurement of interstory drifts and storey stiffnesses might be helpful in order to check the fulfillment of damage limit state and stiffness regularity in elevation required by seismic design codes. This paper presents two approximate methods, strongly interrelated each other, and addressed to achieve each of these two purposes for frame buildings. A brief description of some already existing methods addressed to the same aims is included to compare the main differences in terms of general approaches and assumptions. Both new approximate methods are then applied to 9 'ideal' frames and 2 'real' buildings designed according to the Italian seismic code. The results are compared with the 'exact' values obtained by the code-based standard calculation, performed via FEM models, showing a satisfactory range of accuracy. Compared with those by the other methods from literature, they indicate the proposed procedures lead to a better approximation of the objective structural parameters, especially for those buildings designed according to the modern 'capacity design' philosophy.

  • In this paper, it is represented that equations for design of linear interferometer antenna when the 3 dB beamwidth is only region of interest. Using the equations, relationships between angle measurement ambiguity and element antenna spacings are described. And then, operating frequency, angle measurement accuracy, beamwidth, correct measurement probability are calculated for five antennas interferometer to measure azimuth and elevation angle. The interferometer antenna was designed and fabricated using the calculated parameters. The angle measurement accuracy were $0.01^{\circ}$ and $0.016^{\circ}$ for azimuth and elevation axes with 99 % probability of doing measurements correctly which means that ambiguous solution did not occur more than 1 % of the time. These results validated the equations and design procedures.

  • In this study, an optimization routine with genetic algorithms is coupled for the selection of free variables for the production of a control signal for the motion of wave board in the numerical wave tank. An excitation function for the controlling of the wave board is formulated on basis of amplitude modulation for the generation of nonlinear wave packets. The found variables by the optimization serve for the determination of wave board motion both with the computation and with the experiment. The breaking criterion of the water waves is implemented as boundary condition for the optimization procedure. With the analysis of the time registration on the local position in the wave tank the optimization routine is accomplished until the given design wave with defined surface elevation is found. Water surface elevation and associated fields of velocity and pressure are numerically computed.

  • Though a reactive distillation column reduces energy requirement and gives easy separation of azeotropic mixture to result in wide practical applications in field, its design is difficult. On the other hand, a commercial design software used largely in chemical process design and performance evaluation can solve the problem, but the addition of reaction into the tray is not simple. In this study the addition is implemented to make the process simulation available, and it is utilized in the design of a TAME process to find the following design guidelines. The addition of reactive trays gives more composition elevation than the composition decrease from the reduction of the trays, and the increase of non-reactive trays does not improve product quality. The elevation of reboiler heat duty lowers the product quality by the reduction of residence time in reactive tray and conversion.

  • Urban Storm Sewer Optimal Design Model(USSOD) was developed to compute pipe capacity, pipe slope, crown elevation, excavation depth, risk and return cost in the condition of design discharge. Rational formula is adopted for design discharge and Manning's formula is used for pipe capacity. Discrete differential dynamic programming(DDDP) technique which is a kind of dynamic programming (DP) is used for optimization and first order second moment approximation method and uncertainty analysis is also for developing model. USSOD is applied to hypothetical drainage basin to test and verify. After testing the model, it is also applied to Ulsan drainage basin which was developed by Korea Land Cooperation(KOLAND). Comparing the design results of USSOD with those of KOLAND, discharge capacity 0.35 $m^3/sec$, the crown elevation is 0.77m higher and return cost is $9\%$ less than design results of KOLAND, which verify the improvement of USSOD. Layout design model using GIS and optimization including detention or retention effect are needed in the future study.

  • For expression of isogram in mobile GIS environments, the client needs to receive the value data with the topographical map from a server. At this point, a client can't get the entire raw data because of the mobile characteristics. The approach to get representative points and to make isogram by interpolation methods, has some problems. The approach requires huge computing overhead at the client and doesn't guarantee the correctness of the isogram. In this paper, a data structure, algorithm and implementation results for efficient transmission of contour information to a client which is constructed from a elevation information at a server, are proposed.
