  • Distribution of underground organs of perennial weeds in soil and ecological control measure were evaluated. Tubers of Cypers serotinus and Sagittaria pygmaea were mostly presented in a shallow depth of 0 to 5cm, however, Potamogeton distinctus's bulbs and Eleocharis kuroguwai's tubers were distributed in the soil at 10 to 20cm. A 20cm autumn plowing was, to some extent, effective to reduce Potamogeton distinctus. The herbicide, avirosan at 3kg/10a alone, was extremely effective in controlling Potamogeton distinctus.

  • To investigate the flora of wetland at Mt. II-Kwang, the helophyte of the mountain was examined. The flora observed was classified into 2 phyla, 15 families, 27 genera, and 34 species. Representative species at the wetland were Drosera rotundifolia, Utricularia racemosa, Utricularia bifida, Eriocaulon miquelianum, and Eleocharis attenuata var. laeviseta. In the lower part of the wetland, water was abundant and soil surface layer was thin, and Eriocaulon miquelianum-Carex canescens-Drosera rotundifolia, community were developed. On the other hand, in the upper part of the wetland, water was not abundant and soil surface layer was thick, and Agrostis clavata-Phragmiles japonica community were community were developed. Utricularia bifida and Utricularia yakusimensis were growing abundantly at this wetland, but Utricularia racemasa was few in number and narrow in the distribution area. Eriocaulon miquelianum, a Korean endemic plant, was observed, and Habenaria linearifolia, Spiranthes amoena, and Epipactis thunbergii, the CITES plant, were observed at this wetland. Insectivorous plant such as Drosera rotundifolia, Utricularia racemosa, Utricularia bifida, and Utricularia yakusimensis were also observed.

  • In the Sumeunmulbaengdui Wetland Protected Area of Jeju Island, there exists a unique pond, a so-called 'Ohmi', which is likely to be an oasis supporting the wildlife and escaped-livestock. We exquisitely described the diversity and distribution of plant community of the Ohmi. Despite its small area, six syntaxa were identified: Sphagnum community of peat bog type, Nymphoides coreana community of the floating-leaf limnetic vegetation, Scirpus triangulatus community and Schoenoplectus hotarui community of the littoral zone vegetation, and Deinostema violacea-Eleocharis congesta community and Eriocaulon atrum-miquelianum community of the ephemeral vegetation. A zonal distribution of plant communities along the water depth was recognized. The Sphagnum islets regarded as a typical component of peat bog, in Korea were first described at the center of the Ohmi. We conclude that the Ohmi is a primeval keystone habitat of the Sumeunmulbaengdui intermediate moor with a less oligotrophic ombrotrophic environment.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the agronomic traits, comparison of weed characteristics and possibility of gene flow in 'vitamin A enforced GM rice' and the donor plant, 'Nagdong'. The GM rice was not significantly different agronomic traits compared to the donor plant, Nagdong. Weed population changes were investigated in the cultivation of the GM rice and the donor plant, Nagdong. Dominant weed species and their dry matter did not show the difference between GM rice and the donor plant, Nagdong in macro-GM crop field. Dominant weed species with the GM rice and the donor plant, Nagdong were Monochoria vaginalis, followed by Eleocharis kuroguwai, Echinochloa crus-galli and Lindernia procumbens. The detection of gene from the GM rice was done using PCR, gene flow can't be detected by weed species. Results of this study on the agronomic traits, weed characteristics and possibility of gene flow has elucidated that GM rice might not be different from the donor plant, Nagdong.

  • A weed population has been mainly analyzed through vegetative analysis method in ecology. However, this method is difficult to understand a detailed feature of weed dominance in terms of region and a particular weed species. Since GIS(Geographic Information System) tool has been introduced, this constraint was able to be solved. GIS analysis for the nationwide weed survey data in 1981 revealed that most predominant weed was Monochoria vaginalis and this species predominated mostly in a western part of Chungnam, a part of Kyunggi, a northern and southern part of Kyungbuk province of Korea. Eleocharis kuroguwai which was the most predominant weed species in 1992 was occurred at southern part of Kyunggi, central and western parts of Chungnam, and southern western part of Chumnam at the GIS analysis. GIS analysis was proven to give much more detailed information than vegetative analysis of weed population and this means that a data analysis by GIS would be used for operating a high effective control strategy against target weed species and site.

  • The paper was reviewed the research results on weed dynamics and effective control methods in direct-seeded rice crop. Direct seeding method resulted in drastic increment of weed growth compared to transplanting method and also changed in troublesome weed flora. Two to three fold more weeds were harvested at the direct seeded rice and weed flora of dominant species shifted toward $C_4$type grass weeds. Some of the important troublesome weeds in direct seeded rice were Echinochloa crus-galle, Oryza saliva ssp spontanea, Leptochloa chinensis. Setaria viridus. Digitaria adsendens, Sesbania exaltata, Aeschynomene indica, Algae, etc. Yield loss due to weed competiton was about 40-60% for water-seeded and about 70-100% for dry-seeded rice while these for transplanted rice were about 25-35% for mechanical transplanting and about 10-20% for manual transplanting, respectively. Integrated weed management concept was neede to approach weed control effectively. Several cultural technologies were very effective to suppress the weed growth. These were tillage operation, water management, seeding date and seeding rate. Crop residues of barley, rice, wheat, oat and italian ryegrass were also effectivly suppressed the paddy weeds particularly to Potamogeton distiuctus, a perennial broadleaf weed. A pathogen of Epicoccosorus nematosporus identified from Eleocharis kuroguwai was an excellent potential bioagent to control the most troublesome perennial sedge weed of E. Kuroguwai without arising any detrimental effect. The herbicidal efficacy of this pathogen was as high as bentazon herbicide. Plant growth regulator of paclobutrazol (pp-333) was another possible alternative to reduce the herbicide use. In current, herbicide exhibited the most conspicuous results to control weeds in direct-seeded rice even though the application technologies were not fully established. Recommendations for herbicide application were suggested for in both water-and dry-seeded rice in USA, Japan and Korea, respectively. To make better and comprehensive recommendations further studies on weed ecology and herbicide development were emphasized.

  • Emergence and growth of Potamogeton distinctus, Eleocharis kuroguwai, and Sagittaria pygmaea were examined at soil temperatures of 12, 15, 18, 22, 26, and $30^{\circ}C$ and 3 planting depth conditions. Optimum soil temperatures for emergence were 15-$22^{\circ}C$ 22-$26^{\circ}C$, and 18-$26^{\circ}C$ for P. distinctus, E. kurogueai, and S. pygmaea, respectively. Emergence was delayed and growth became poor in three species as planting depths were increased and this trend was more significant in E. kuroguwai.

  • A new paddy field herbicide, metazosulfuron granule is an herbicide for controlling annual and perennial weeds occurring in machinery transplanting paddy field. It is recommended to apply $30kg\;ha^{-1}$ 15 days after transplanting. As a result of preliminary tests, it could control seven annual species such as Echinochloa crus-galli, Bidens tripartita, Ludwigia prostrata, Monochoria vaginalis var. plantaginea, etc. and four perennial species including Cyperus serotinus, Sagittaria trifolia, Eleocharis kuroguwai, and Scirpus juncoides. Monochoria vaginalis var. plantaginea, S. trifolia and S. juncoides resistant to sulfonylurea- herbicides were also controlled. Because application timing of the herbicide is wide, it is very efficient to control the spraying timing by users. Phytotoxicity of rice cultivars was not observed, and the impact on the environment is very limited.

  • In greenhouse studies, control efficacy of water chestnut (Eleocharis Kuroguwai) by Epicoccosorus nematosporus was affected by temperature and dew condition. The appressoria were formed abundantly in the range of 20~28$^{\circ}C$. When stem segments o(30 cm long) of the water chestnut were inoculated with the conidial suspension of E. nematorporus, the mean conidial number attacted amounted to 2,545 conidia. Out of 2545 conidia attacted to the stem pieces, 1,733 (68%) conidia formed appressoria. When these stem pieces were treated for 24 hr at 28$^{\circ}C$ under dew condition, 183,1 (7.2%) lesions were formed 10 days after incubation. The time necessary for the death of the plants was about 24 days. Appressoria were formed at 15~35$^{\circ}C$, but decreased rapidly in their numbers at the temperature lower than 1$0^{\circ}C$ or at 35$^{\circ}C$. The appressoria formation seemed to be depended on the dew duration, which was effective to the lesion formation and plant mortality. Under dew duration of 16~24 hr with temperature range of $25^{\circ}C$ to 3$0^{\circ}C$, the weed control was increased up to 93.9%. There were no differences between the first and second or third dew treatments. A delay of 2 or 3 days in dew treatment did not increase the mortality of plants. For the use of E. nematosporus as a mycoherbicide of water chestnut, a conidial suspension should be applied when dew conditions are kept for 12 hr after inoculation.

  • Weed communities in the dry-direct seeded rice(Oryza sativa L.), soybean(Glycine max(L.) Merr.), and dry-direct seeded rice-soybean rotation system from the transplanted rice field were investigated in order to identify a change in weed species by paddy-upland rotation. Echinochloa species was the most dominant species in the dry-direct seeded rice and their great increase was observed in the continued practices of dry-direct seeded rice. Echinochloa spp., Chenopodium ficifolium, and Digitaria spp. were identified as the major weeds in soybean cultivation in paddy field. Practice of soybean rotation in the dry-seeded rice reduced weed occurrence, particularly at the soybean after 2-yr continued dry-direct seeded rice and at dry-direct seeded rice culture after 2-yr continued dry-direct seeded rice and at dry-direct seeded rice culture after 2-yr soybean compared to the continued cultures of rice or soybean. In addition, cultivation of dry-direct seeded rice or soybean culture in the paddy rice field seemed to be helpful for suppression of perennial weeds(Eleocharis kuroguwai, Cyperus serotinus, Scirpus juncoides) and aquatic weeds(Monochoria vaginalis, Sagittaria spp. Potamogeton distinctus).
