Among the children, those in Seoul had higher preference for salty taste than those in Kochang-gun(X2=8.32, p<0.05). Method: Data were collected by questionnaire from 465 5th and 6th grade elementary school children living in Daegu and North Kyungsang Province. Data were collected between December 1 and 20, 2003 and analyzed using the SPSS program with means, standard deviation, t-test, and Pearson's correlation coefficients. Results: The stress level was significantly higher in children who lived in the big city. The coping behavior score was not significantly different according to size of city, nor was there a difference in the health problems according to size of city. There was a positive correlation among stress level, coping behaviors and health problems. Conclusion: In general, the stress level was significantly different but coping behavior scores and health problem scores were not significantly different according to size of city. Also the elementary school children used more passive coping behavior than active coping behavior. Therefore, strategies to develop active coping behaviors for these children are needed.

Japanese children reported to eat Korean foods (2.9 points) more frequently than those of Korean children to eat Japanese foods (2.4 out of 5.0 points) (p<0.001). However, the Korean children reported to have more experience on given typical Japanese foods than Japanese children reported about Korean foods. Further studies are needed for the perception on traditional foods in Korean and Japanese children. The results of this study can be used as a basic data to succeed and develop traditional food cultures.

  • Elementary School is a special facility where sense of place plays critical role for the development of children. Children in special education call for special attention as they hold inferior status compared to the children in regular class especially under the inclusive education policy. Eight cases of special education class area are analyzed in terms of social space, personal space and favorite place which is known to be basic factor for the development. As a result outdoor space found to be designed inappropriate even when designed accessible to the special education class as it could not meet the developmental needs of children in special education. Special education class area inside the building is also found to be too exclusive to allow social mix with children in regular class disregarding the intention of inclusive education. Location of these class should be strategic as it is critical to be linked with regular classroom efficiently still allowing psychological buffer as the children in special education tend to form restorative space inside the special education classroom showing the possibility of creating sense of place there.

  • This study focuses on analyzing children's behavior from an integrated systemic perspective of the space and time and presenting a criterion and a guide of children-centered environmental color for intensifying their behavior affordance while considering functions of the space and color. Research was conducted as follows. Based on the spatial function and children's behavior, it figured out a prerequisite of educational environmental colors for behavior affordance. It extracted colors by dividing children's behavior affordance into 8elements considering a psychology of expectation and color function according to spatial and behavior affordance intensification elements. So 97school colors were selected for children's behavior affordance from abstracted colors by each element. Furthermore, it planned to suggest an environmental color guide for establishing elementary school's positive educational circumstances through enhancing behavior affordance, providing a potential to change a color environment at the educational space.

Subjects were 536 mothers 1st-5th graders in the elementary schools in the Seoul. Pearson's r, pearcentage(%), phi($\phi$/), Cronbach's $\alpha$/ ware conducted for the statistical analysis. The major findings were as follows. 1) The item pass rate(percentage) were ranged 16~98. 2) The discriminant coefficients($\phi$/) of the item were ranged 0.06~0.58. 3) The reliability coefficients of the scale were that the split-falf was 0.84, and Cronbach's $\alpha$/ was 0.88. Considering the length of the scale, these reliability estimates appear to be at an acceptable level 4) The factor analysis and the correlations between HOME and SES indices and children's school schievement to test construct validity were conducted to test construct validity. Eight factors were extracted from the factor analysis and coefficients(r) were ranged 0.16~0.45 and -0.08~0.37.
