In the present research, dynamic analysis of functionally graded (FG) graphene-reinforced beams under thermal loading has been carried out based on finite element approach. The presented formulation is based on a higher order refined beam element accounting for shear deformations. The graphene-reinforced beam is exposed to transverse periodic mechanical loading. Graphene platelets have three types of dispersion within the structure including uniform-type, linear-type and nonlinear-type. Convergences and validation studies of derived results from finite element approach are also presented. This research shows that the resonance behavior of a nanocomposite beam can be controlled by the GPL content and dispersions. Therefore, it is showed that the dynamical deflections are notably influenced by GPL weight fractions, types of GPL distributions, temperature changes, elastic foundation and harmonic load excitation frequency.

The optimal type and discharging position of ocean outfall of wastewater have been determined by hydrodynamic modeling, near-field dilution modeling, and far-field dispersion modeling. Tide and tidal currents have been simulated by a finite element hydrodynamic model showing good agreements with field observations. Based on the hydrodynamic simulation results candidates of ocean outfall position were preliminary determined. Submerged single port and submerged multi-port diffuser were selected as discharging system alternatives and finally designed by considering tide, tidal currents and water depth. Initial dilution of wastewater discharged from the designed ports has been estimated by CORMIX system. A 2-dimensional random-walk dispersion model has been employed to simulate far-field dispersion of discharged wastewater.

In this study we propose a new photonic crystal fiber (PCF) design that simultaneously offers broadband single-mode operation, high birefringence, and large normal dispersion in the optical-communication wavelength regime. The waveguide is based on a hybrid square-lattice PCF (HS-PCF) that has circular air holes of two different diameters alternating in the cladding, plus a pure silica defect at the center. The optical properties of the guided modes are analyzed numerically by the finite-element method (FEM) with a perfectly matched layer as the boundary condition. The optimized HS-PCF has a dispersion coefficient of $-601.67\;ps\;nm^{-1}\;km^{-1}$ and a high birefringence of $1.025{\times}10^{-2}$ at $1.55{\mu}m$. In addition, over the S+C+L+U wavelength bands the proposed HS-PCF with ultraflat birefringence with a slope on the order of $10^{-5}$.

It has been shown that the vibrational response of a tire can be represented by a set of decaying waves, each associated with a particular cross-sectional shapes, in the region near the contact patch. Thus, it can be concluded that tires can be effectively modeled as lossy waveguides. It has also been shown that the sound radiation from tires is mainly from the region close to contact patch. The use of frequency-dependent spectral element matrix (or exact dynamic stiffness matrix) in structural dynamics is known to provide very accurate solutions, while reducing the number of degrees-of-freedom to resolve the computational and cost problems. Thus, in the present paper, the spectral element model is formulated for the axially moving Timoshenko beam under a uniform axial tension. The high accuracy of the present spectral element is then verified by comparing its solutions with the conventional finite element solutions and exact analytical solutions. The effects of the moving speed and axial tension on the vibration characteristics, the dispersion relation, and the stability of a moving Timoshenko beam are investigated, analytically and numerically.

A finite element method analysis framework is introduced for the free vibration analyses of functionally graded porous beam structures by employing two variables trigonometric shear deformation theory. Both Young's modulus and material density of the FGP beam element are simultaneously considered as grading through the thickness of the beam. The finite element approach is developed using a nonlocal strain gradient theory. The governing equations derived here are solved introducing a 3-nodes beam element. A comprehensive parametric study is carried out, with a particular focus on the effects of various structural parameters such as the dispersion patterns of GPL reinforcements and porosity, thickness ratio, boundary conditions, nonlocal scale parameter and strain gradient parameters. The results indicate that porosity distribution and GPL pattern have significant effects on the response of the nanocomposite beams.

An experimental study has been carried out using a rotating water channel in order to investigate the effect of surface roughness on the vertical dispersion of plume within boundary layer. Dispersion measurements of tracers released from two sources with different height at neutral conditions over various rough terrain ranging from rural to urban have been performed. Various values of roughness length were simulated by combining of 4 stream velocities and 3 roughness element conditions. Dispersion measurements have also been made for rough terrain where high buildings are locally concentrated. Values of $\sigma$z increase with roughness and this tendency appears to apply both cases of with and without locally concentrated high buildings. The comparisons of the Bowne's nomogram on $\sigma$2 vs x relationship and the measurements of $\sigma$2 with roughness show good accordance in $\sigma$2 distribution at stability D class over rural, suburban and urban terrain. For constant roughness length the $\sigma$2 values of plumes from lower source height are smaller than those of plumes from higher source at short downwind distance, but this relationship becomes reverse as distance increases. Crossing appears to be made before about 2km. The value of constant I in McMullen's equation $\sigma$2=exp [I+J(In x) + K(In x)2] appears to increase with roughness length, however, the relationships between other constants and roughness have been confirmed. The values of $\sigma$2 for various downwind distances, estimated by using an equation which is employed in ISC (Industrial Source Complex) dispersion model for areas where high buildings are locally assembled, are in accordance with measurements from water channel experiments.

The use of frequency-dependent dynamic stiffness matrix (or spectral element matrix) in structural dynamics may provide very accurate solutions, while it reduces the number of degrees-of-freedom to improve the computational efficiency and cost problems. Thus, this paper develops a spectral element model for the thin plates moving with constant speed under uniform in-plane tension. The concept of Kantorovich method is used in the frequency-domain to formulate the dynamic stiffness matrix. The present spectral element model is evaluated by comparing its solutions with the exact analytical solutions. The effects of moving speed and in-plane tension on the flexural wave dispersion characteristics and natural frequencies of the plate are numerically investigated.
This study was conducted to propose a reasonable requirement regulation of barrier system of rubble mound revetment offshore landfill for preventing contaminant leakage. The barrier is composed with bottom layer and side barrier. The bottom layer was assumed as impermeable clay layer and side barrier was composed with HDPE sheet (primary element) and mid-protection layer (supplementary element). Seepage-advection-dispersion numerical analysis has been conducted using SEEP/W and CTRAN/W programs under steady flow. As the results, the minimum required barrier regulations for hydraulic conductivity and thickness of the bottom layer were suggested. For side barrier, the extended length of HDPE sheet and the hydraulic conductivity of mid-protection layer were also suggested.
