전자선형 가속기의 제작과 국제적 이용 현황 I

  • 한나라의 과학수준이 rocket기술이나 가속기의 출력 energy로서 운운 되었을 때가 있었는데 그때의 기속기는 원자핵 반응을 인공적으로 실험해 보는데 없어서는 안되는 것이기 때문이었다. 2차대전중 원자폭전의 출현을 보게 한 원자로의 발전은 대전후에는 평화적인 이용면에 따르는 응용 분야가 없는 고 energy의 소립자 연구라든지 isotope생산, 고분자화학 및 의료용등에는 대전중에 발전된 잔자기술의 이용으로 더 큰 가속기의 출현이 필요하였다. 특히 이 Electron Accelerator(이하 Linac라고 함)는 높은 고압과 큰 자석을 쓰지 않는 면에서 손쉽게 우리 신변에서 초고압 X선 이상의 효과로 쓸수있게해 주어서 그 이용면은 매우 다급해졌다. 여기서 우리나라의 입장에서 이러한 것을 살펴볼 때 첫째의 radar기술이 충분히 있으면서 이러한 것을 평화적 생산면에서 아직 활용하지 못하고 있으며 한편에서는 외국으로 부터 강력 동위원소를 도입하여 오고 있는데 Linac를 제작하여 여기서 이용하면 이러한 동위원소의 강도 이상의 것을 우리나라 기술로서 제작할 수 있다. 여기서 그 원리와 제작면에 있어서의 문제점 및 국제적인 이용 현황을 소개해 보겠다.

Neutron Generation from a 24 MV Medical Linac (24 MV 의료용 선형가속기의 중성자 발생에 관한 연구)

  • The energy spectra and dose calculations were performed for secondary neutrons from a 24 MV LINAC using MCNPX code (V2, 4, 0). The energy spectra for neutrons and photons emitted from the LINAC head, and absorbed dose to water were calculated in water phantom. The absorbed doses calculated with Monte Carlo were $0.66\~0.35$ mGy/photon Gy at the surface to d=5 cm, and calculated with interaction data was 0.52 mGy/photon Gy at the depth of electron equilibrium in water. We have shown that this work can be applied to dose estimation of neutrons from high energy LINAC through the comparison of our results with other results.

  • The 2.5GeV linac of the Pohang Light Source(PLS) is planed to be converted to a XFEL. The PAL XFEL requires a new 1.2-GeV linac that will be combined to the existing linac to increase a beam energy upto 3.7GeV. This stability is mainly determined by a low level RF drive system and klystron-modulators. The stability level of the modulator has to be improved 10 times better to meet the pulse stability of 0.02 %. The regulation methods such as traditional de-Qing and precision inverter charging technology are reviewed to find out suitable upgrade scheme of the modulators. In order to obtain electron beam of the consequently stability for XFEL linac, the pulse-to-pulse beam voltage regulation is less than +/-0.5%. To get the reliable stability of the modulator which is less than +/-0.2%, a charging section is improved in a modulator which has been operated with inverter power supply and de-Q'ing.

  • An electron gun system for a nanosecond pulse linac has been built and tested. The gun grid is driven with a grid pulser, which consists of an avalanche transistor pulser and parallel triode amplifier. The amplifier is installed in an end hole of the electron gun and provided for power amplification and polarity change of the output pulses of the avalanche transistor pulser. An output pulse of 200 V and 2 ns FWHM was obtained by using the grid pulser of can type transistors. Measurements with a test bench show that the electron gun can deliver 2ns pulse with with currents larger than 3A.

Calculation of Energy Spectra for 6 MeV Electron Beam of LINAC Using MCNPX (MCNPX를 이용한 선형가속기의 6 MeV 전자선에 대한 에너지분포 계산)

  • The electron energy spectra for 6 MeV electron beam were calculated using a MCNPX code. The head of the linear accelerator (ML6M; Mitsubishi, Japan) was modelled for this study. The energy spectrum of the initial electron beam was assumed to be Gaussian and the mean energy was determined by evaluating the measured and calculated values of $R_{50}$ and dose profiles in air. The energy distributions for electrons and photons at the interested points in the head of the linear accelerator were calculated by appling the Initial beam parameters. The effect of contaminant photons on depth dose curves were estimated by the photon energy spectra at the end of the applicator.

  • The neutron capture cross section of $^{99}Tc$ has been measured relative to the $^{10}B(n,\gamma)$ standard cross section by the neutron time-of-flight(TOF) method in the energy range of 0.007 eV to 47 keV using a 46-MeV electron linear accelerator(linac) at the Research Reactor. Institute, Kyoto University(KURRI). In order to experimentally prove the result obtained, the supplementary cross section measurement has been made from 0.3 eV to 1 keV using the Kyoto University Lead stowing-down spectrometer (KULS) coupling to the linac. The relative measurement by the TOF method has been normalized to the reference value(20.01 b) at 0.0253 eV and the KULS measurement to that by the TOF method. The existing experimental data and the evaluated capture cross sections in ENDF/B-VI, JENDL-3.2, and JEF-2.2 have been compared with the current measurements by the linac TOF and the KULS experiments.

KLYSTRON-MODULATOR SYSTEM PERFORMANCES FOR PLS 2-GeV LINAC (포항 20억 전자볼트 선형가속기 클라이스트론-모듈레이터 시스템의 성능)

  • The PLS 2-GeV linac employs 11 units of high-power pulsed klystrons(80MW) as the main RF sources. The matching modulators of 200 MW(400kV, 500 A) can provide a flat-top pulse width of 4.4 ${\mu}s$ with a maximum pulse repetition rate of 120 Hz at the full power level. For a good stability of electron beams, the pulse-to-pulse flat-top voltage variation of a modulator requires less than 0.5%. In order to achieve this goal, we stabilized high voltage charging power supplies within 1% by a phase controlled SCR voltage regulator. In addition, we employed ac/dc feedback together with a resistive De-Q'ing system to achieve far less than 0.5% variation of the PFN charging voltage. This paper presents the main feature of the klystron-modulator system and the characteristics of the pulsed high-power RF system performance during the beam injection operation for the Pohang Light Source commissioning.

Ultrastructural study of mouse ovary under X-ray irradiation (방사선 조사선량에 따른 생쥐 난소의 미세구조적 연구)

  • This study investigated the structural changes of folliculus ovarii according to the dose of the X-rays when mice were exposed to X-rays from 6MeV LINAC. The minute structural changes of folliculus ovarii were observed through an electron microscope with high magnification. Nuclei and protoplasm of granular cells in growing folliculus ovarii abruptly underwent minute structural changes according to the increase of dose of X-rays. Cell residue, by-product of cell decease, neutrophil and macrophage around follicular antrum were observed. The minute structural changes in granular cells showed typical characteristics of apoptosis: the increase of electronic density due to nuclear condensation, fragmentation of nuclei, and atrophy of protoplasm. Necrosis of cells was identified, but it was not so remarkable. Macrophage scattered with apoptotic bodies.

  • Free electron lasers (FELs) are promising sources of coherent radiation that can provide users with radiations having a wide-range frequency-tunability and good spectral characteristics for basic science and industrial applications. Especially in Terahertz or X-ray ranges of spectrum, FELs can generate much stronger radiations than conventional light sources. In this paper, we introduce the working principles and key technologies of FELs, the status and the prospects of FEL developments.

Design and optimization of thermal neutron activation device based on 5 MeV electron linear accelerator

  • The optimized design of a Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) system, including Delayed Gamma NAA (DGNAA) and Prompt Gamma NAA (PGNAA), has been proposed in this research based on Mevex Linac with 5 MeV electron energy and 50 kW power as a neutron source. Based on the MCNPX 2.6 simulation, the optimized configuration contains; tungsten as an electron-photon converter, BeO as a photoneutron target, BeD2 and plexiglass as moderators, and graphite as a reflector and collimator, as well as lead as a gamma shield. The obtained thermal neutron flux at the beam port is equal to 2.06 × 109 (# /cm2.s). In addition, using the optimized neutron beam, the detection limit has been calculated for some elements such as H-1, B-10, Na-23, Al-27, and Ti-48. The HPGe Coaxial detector has been used to measure gamma rays emitted by nuclides in the sample. By the results, the proposed system can be an appropriate solution to measure the concentration and toxicity of elements in different samples such as food, soil, and plant samples.
