  • The helium liquefier was installed for 7.5 T superconducting wiggler, which is a source of synchrotron radiation, in Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL) in 1995. It is MODEL 1410 fabricated by LINDE (old PSI America) of which capacity is about 17 liter per hour in normal mode and 47 liter per hour with liquid nitrogen pre-cooling. In addition to SC wiggler, we are anticipating that some devices related to electron accelerator are to be upgraded with superconducting application in order to improve the quality of photon beam.

  • A new computer simulation method for film growth, the kinetic Monte Carlo simulation in combination with the results obtained from molecular dynamics simulation for the transient process induced by deposited atoms, was developed. The behavior of energetic atom in Au/Au(100) thin film deposition was investigated by the method. The atomistic mechanism of energetic atom deposition that led to the smoothness enhancement and the relationship between the role of transient process and film growth mechanism were discussed. We found that energetic atoms cannot affect the film growth mode in layer-by-layer at high temperature. However, at temperature of film growth in 3-dimensional mode and in quasi-two-dimensional mode, energetic atoms can enhance the smoothness of film surface. The enhancement of smoothness is caused by the transient mobility of energetic atoms and the suppression for the formation of 3-dimensional islands.

  • In this study, we carried out transient radiation test for identify failure situation by a transient radiation effect on operational amplifier devices. This experiments were carried out using a 60 MeV electron beam pulse of the LINAC(Linear Accelerator) facility in the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory. In this test, we has found that a serious failure as a burn-out effect due to overcurrent on the partial electronic devices.

  • Many research applications in basic sciences and biology such as protein crystallography require hard x-rays in the range of 3-20 keV with high brightness. A medium energy storage ring as PLS-II with a beam energy of 3 GeV can meet such high photon energies. In-vacuum undulators (IVU) with a period length of 20 mm and a peak field of 0.97 T are used in the PLS-II ring to produce such X-rays in the fundamental or higher harmonics. Due to the many poles and high fields, insertion devices like wigglers and undulators have a significant impact on the stability of the electron beam with potential degradation of beam quality and life time. Therefore, nonlinear fields must be determined by measurement and evaluated as to their impact on beam stability. Specifically, transverse field roll-off can be a serious detriment to injection in top-up mode and must be corrected. We use magnetic field measurement data to evaluated beam stability by tracking particles using an explicit symplectic integrator in both, transverse and longitudinal planes.

  • The peak klystron power for the PAL (Pohang Accelerator Laboratory) XFEL (X-ray Free Electron Laser) is up to 80 MW which is higher than that of PLS-II LINAC. To prevent the RF breakdown such a high power operation, some of RF components need to be redesigned to reduce the surface electric field gradient to be less than the breakdown gradient at the vacuum-metal surface. For instances, the redesign of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Energy Doubler (SLED) system, the directional coupler and 3dB power splitter using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation will be presented.

  • The laboratory astrophysics is a new emerging field of basic sciences, and has tremendous discovery potentials. The laboratory astrophysics investigates the basic physical phenomena in the astrophysical objects in controlled and reproducible manners, which has become possible only recently due to the newly-established intense photon and ion beam facilities worldwide. In this presentation, we will introduce several promising ideas for laboratory astrophysics programs that might be readily incorporated in the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X-ray Free Electron Laser (PAL-XFEL). For example, precise spectroscopic measurements using Electron Beam Ion Trap (EBIT) and intense X-ray photons from the PAL-XFEL can be performed to explore the fundamental processes in high energy X-ray phenomena in the visible universe. Besides, in many violent astrophysical events, the energy density of matter becomes so high that the traditional plasma physics description becomes inapplicable. Generation of such high-energy density states can be also be achieved by using the intense photon beams available from the PAL-XFEL.

  • The electrons injected into a laser wakefield undergo betatron oscillation and give rise to the emission of intense X-ray radiation. To investigate the generation conditions of the X-rays, the relativistic motion of an electron injected in an off-axis position has been simulated with wakefield profiles which are pre-calculated with a two-dimensional particle-in-cell code. The wakefield with a plasma density of $1.78{\times}10^{18}\;cm^{-3}$ is generated by the laser with an intensity of $1.37{\times}10^{18}\;W/cm^2$ and a pulse width of 30 fs. From the calculation of the single particle motion, the characteristics of the betatron radiation are investigated in the time domain. As the transverse injection position increases, the power and the duration time of the radiation increase, but the width of each pulse decreases.

  • Dosimerty based on electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis of radiation induced free radicals in amino acids is relevant to biological dosimetry applications. Alanine detectors are without walls and are tissue equivalent. Therefore, alanine ESR dosimetry looks promising for use in the therapy level. The dose range of the alanine/ESR dosimetry system can be extended down to 1 Gy. In water phantom the absorbed dose of electrons generated by a medical linear accelerator of different initial energies $(6\~21MeV)$ and therapeutic dose levels (1~60 Gy) was measured. Furthermore, depth dose measurements carried out with alanine dosimeters were compared with ionization chamber measurements. As the results, the measured absorbed doses for shallow depth of initial electron energies above 15 MeV were higher by$2\~5\%$ than those calculated by nominal energy $C_E$ factors. This seems to be caused by low energy scattered beams generated from the scattering foil and electron cones of beam projecting device in medical linear accelerator.
