This paper validates new type electric power steering (EPS) system which is driven by a uni-direction rotational motor and two electromagnetic clutches. The assist motor of the new type EPS produces a torque for assisting the steering in only one direction and two electromagnetic clutches transmit the assist torque to the pinion gear in either left or right direction with respect to the steering rotation. In order to evaluate the static and dynamic characteristics of the new type EPS, the EPS has been modeled by using the well known customized software such as MSC.ADAMS and MSC.CarSim. The ADAMS software has been used to investigate the static characteristics of the proposed system. ADAMS, however, can not describe dynamics of a vehicle and perform the simulation under the various road conditions. Thus the dynamic characteristics of the vehicle including the EPS are analyzed very well by using the CarSim software. A sinusoidal steering input command is applied to the propose EPS system in order to evaluate the static characteristics, while the double lane changes are applied to the vehicle with the EPS in order to evaluate the dynamic performance. Through a series of simulations, we can conclude that the propose EPS shows the stable dynamic characteristics when the rotational direction is changed.
In the present work, to achieve high braking performance with restricted size, characteristics of magneto-rheological (MR) fluid brake is numerically investigated considering different magnetic core shapes. As a first step, structural configuration of the MR brakes are proposed with four different magnetic core shapes, such as single flat, single inclined, dual flat and dual inclined. To estimate braking performance of the proposed MR brakes, electromagnetic analysis is carried out and the results of magnetic field intensity distribution are observed. Based on the electromagnetic analysis results, braking torque of the MR brake is estimated according to magnitude of current input and results are discussed. It is observed that enhanced braking torque can be achieved by adopting the modified magnetic core shape under limited small size of the MR brake.
The vibrations and noise origin in electric material is due to several coupled physical phenomena. The revolving electric machine complete modeling is complex; it does not allow simple parametric machine structure studies for various operation modes. This work presents a simple electromagnetic model which makes possible the machine principal parts flow estimation from flux density. Special interest is given in determining Switched Reluctance Machine (S.R.M) radial acceleration in accordance with the current supply. Our focus will be only on the magnetic origin efforts that are dominating in the S.R.M. The efforts calculation versus the current is presented in the case of a machine with a linearized rate. These efforts are considered as a tangential force producing the torque and a radial force that generates no torque. The application is realized on a 6/4 low power S.R.M type (6 stator teeth and 4 teeth rotor). The mechanical response is substituted in a transfer function. The model takes account of the power supply of the machine, the relation between the current supply and the efforts as well as the vibratory response of the machine to these efforts. Finally, the model is validated by comparison with similar experimental results within the framework of the definite assumptions.

For reduction of the amount of CO2 emitted from ships, power generation characteristics of two power generation systems consisting of a high-efficiency permanent magnet synchronous generator and diode bridge rictifiers are discussed in this paper. One of the discussed systems has three-phase stator windings, and the other has two sets of three-phase (six-phase) stator windings to reduce pulsation in the electromagnetic torque and DC current. Experimental results reveal that the power generation efficiency of the system having six-phase stator windings is higher than that of the system having three-phase stator windings for a light load. The maximum power generation efficiency of the system having six-phase stator windings is almost the same as that of the system having three-phase stator windings. For the electromagnetic torque of the system having six-phase stator windings, the width of pulsation is about one-fifth compared to the system having three-phase stator windings.
This paper presents a result of the mechanical noise and vibration analysis as well as the electrical characteristics analysis of the permanent magnet (PM) motor according to the driving method that is Brushless DC (BLDC) drive and Brushless AC (BLAC) drive. To do that, the characteristics of the PM motor, which have the same output power but different driving method, are investigated. At that time, the characteristics such as torque, torque ripple and flux density, and so on, are obtained by finite element analysis (FEA). Besides, noise and vibration are obtained by spectrum analysis. The magnetic noise is defined as noise generated from vibrations due to electromagnetic excitation force. In this paper, the electromagnetic excitation force is analyzed and design process of noise reduction is proposed. Finally, The validity of the analysis results is verified by test.
This paper describes the electromagnetic and mechanical characteristics of coaxial magnetic gear (CMG) with a low gear ratio. The analysis models are restricted to a CMG with a gear ratio of less than 2. The electromagnetic characteristics including transmitted torque and iron losses are presented according to the variation of the gear ratio. The pole pairs of high speed rotor are chosen as 6, 8 and 10 by considering the torque capability. As the gear ratio approaches 1, both iron losses on the ferromagnetic materials and eddy current losses on the rotor permanent magnets are increased. The radial and tangential forces on the modulating pieces are calculated using the Maxwell stress tensor. When the maximum force is exerted on the modulating pieces, the mechanical characteristics including stress and deformation are derived by structural analysis. In CMG models with a low gear ratio, the maximum radial force acting on modulating pieces is larger than that in CMG models with a high gear ratio, and the normal stress and normal deformation are increased in a CMG with a low gear ratio. Therefore, modulating pieces should be designed to withstand larger radial forces in CMG with a low gear ratio compared to CMG with a high gear ratio.
This paper deals with the design and modal characteristics analysis of a drive-train for a paralleltype hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). The function of the drive-train system (DTS) in the HEV combines or divides the torque and velocity from the internal combustion engine along with the induction motor. The system consists of a compound planetary gear and unit's electromagnetic clutch to provide the operation modes such as Engine Only (EO), Electric Vehicle (EV), and Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) modes. In order to investigate the characteristics of the velocity and torque flow for the system, dynamic models of the HEV with DTS are derived from the prototype DTS. The performance of the derived dynamic models is evaluated by both computer simulations and experiments according to each mode.
In this paper, we present a comparative analysis of surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motors (SPMSM) and interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSM). First, we use 2D finite element analysis (FEA) to analyze models satisfying the same rated conditions according to the torque-speed curve characteristics, which are determined from the operating conditions. Next, we manufacture an SPMSM and IPMSM having good performances from an electromagnetic perspective based on analysis results, namely the cogging torque, torque ripple, and efficiency. We analyze both of the manufactured machines when they are connected back-to-back and when they are used as a motor and a generator, respectively. The motor is driven by a commercial inverter and the generator is connected to a three-phase resistance load bank. Finally, based on experimental results, which include the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the back electro-motive force (EMF), cogging torque, efficiency, and mass, we determine the motor that is most suitable under requirements.
This paper presents an improved predictive control of an induction machine fed by a matrix converter using N-switching vectors as the control action during a complete sampling period of the controller. The conventional model predictive control scheme based matrix converter uses a single switching vector over the same period which introduces high torque ripple. The proposed switching scheme for a matrix converter based model predictive control of an induction machine drive selects the appropriate switching vectors for control of electromagnetic torque with small variations of the stator flux. The proposed method can reduce the ripple of the electrical variables by selecting the switching state as well as the method used in the space vector modulation techniques. Simulation results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the improved predictive control strategy for induction machine fed by a matrix converter.
This paper is proposed an efficiency optimization control algorithm for a synchronous reluctance motor which minimizes the copper and iron losses. The design of the speed controller based on adaptive fuzzy-neural networks(AFNN) controller that is implemented using fuzzy control and neural networks. There exists a variety of combinations of d and q-axis current which provide a specific motor torque. The objective of the efficiency optimization controller is to seek a combination of d and q-axis current components, which provides minimum losses at a certain operating point in steady state. It is shown that the current components which directly govern the torque production have been very well regulated by the efficiency optimization control scheme. The proposed algorithm allows the electromagnetic losses in variable speed and torque drives to be reduced while keeping good torque control dynamics. The control performance of the hybrid artificial intelligent controller is evaluated by analysis for various operating conditions. Analysis results are presented to show the validity of the proposed algorithm.
