  • Remaining life of turbine rotors with a crack can be assessed by the fracture toughness of the aged rotors at service temperature. DC potential drop measurement system was constructed in order to evaluate material toughness nondestructively. Test material was 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel used widely for turbine rotor material. Seven kinds of specimen with different degradation levels were prepared according to isothermal aging heat treatment at $630^{\circ}C$. Electrical resistivity of test material was measured at room temperature. It was observed that material toughness and electrical resistivity decreased with the increase of degradation. The relationship between fracture toughness and electrical resistivity was investigated. Fracture toughness of a test material may be determined nondestructively by electrical resistivity.

  • Since the variations of electromagnetic suspension forces of maglev trains have close relations with the acceleration of the levitated bodies, it is basic to control the levitation forces using the measured acceleration of vehicles. In this study, an airgap control algorithm based on acceleration feedback is applied to maglev trains and a dynamic analysis method is developed considering maglev train-guideway interaction. Using the developed method, dynamic behaviors of a maglev train-guideway interaction system are investigated. It is observed from the analysis that the current design guidelines can be satisfied when the proposed airgap control algorithm is employed. Using the contorl algorithm, the current guidelines can be improved and economical maglev railway guideway structures can be designed.

  • A compact phase interpolator (PI) based spread spectrum clock generator (SSCG) for electromagnetic interference (EMI) reduction is presented. The proposed SSCG utilizes a digitally controlled phase interpolation technique to achieve triangular frequency modulation with less design complexity and small power and area overhead. The novel SSCG can generate the system clock with a programmable center-spread spectrum range of up to +/- 2 % at 200 MHz, while maintaining the clock duty cycle ratio without distortions. The PI-based SSCG has been designed and evaluated in 0.18-um 1.8-V CMOS technology, which consumes about 5.0 mW at 200MHz and occupies a chip size of $0.092mm^2$ including a DLL.

  • Non-stochiometric CdS:H films grown on polyethersulfon (PES) flexible polymer substrates at room temperature by R.F. sputtering technique. They exhibited a dark- and photo-sheet resistance of $2.7\times10^5$ and $\sim\;50\;{\Omega}$/square, respectively. These values were realized by an optimum control of both hydrogen doping-levels and the surface morphologies of the films. The comparison between the real and the simulated results for the shielding and the transmission by the free space measurement system in the X-band frequency range (8.2 - 12.4 GHz) was also addressed in this study. Samples overlapped with 13 layers of CdS:H/PES were consistent with the transmission results of pure aluminum metal films ($0.1\;{\Omega}$/square) deposited on PES substrates. As a result, by the simples tacking of the CdS:H/PES layers, the perfect control of the shielding and the transmission of the EM wave in the range of X-band frequency is possible by avisible light alone, and their results are especially very outstanding findings in the stealth function of the radome(Radar+Dome) such as aircrafts, ships, and missiles.

  • Millimeter-wave dielectric ceramics have been used like applications for ultrahigh speed wireless LAN because it reduces the resources of electromagnetic wave, and Intelligent Transport System (ITS) because of straight propagation wave. For millimeterwave, the dielectric ceramics with high quality factor (Q$.$f), low dielectric constant($\varepsilon$), and nearly zero temperature coefficient of resonant frequency ($\tau$) are needed. No microwave dielectric ceramics with these three properties exist except Ba(Mg$\_$1/3/Ta/sub1/3/)O$_3$ (BMT), which has a little high s: In this paper, alumina (Al$_2$O$_3$) and fosterite (Mg$_2$SiO$_4$), candidates for millimeter-wave applications, were studied with an objective to get high q$.$f and nearly zero $\tau$$\_$f/ For alumina ceramics, q$.$f more than 680,000 GHz was obtained but it was difficult to obtain nearly zero Qf. On the other hand, for forsterite ceramics, q$.$f was achieved from 10,000 GHz of commercial for sterite to 240,000 GHz of highly purified MgO and SiO$_2$ raw materials, and $\tau$$\_$f/ was reduced a few by adding TiO$_2$ with high positive $\tau$$\_$f/.

  • The gamma-gamma coincidence measurements and angular correlation measurement associated with the electron capture of $^{75}Se$ have been carried to understand the structure for the odd nuclei $^{75}As$ with two HPGe detectors. As a result, we could determined the band structure of 5/2 state to be of 1/2 [310] band which is based on $f_{5/2}$ proton state. Also we obtained the multipole admixture in the state of 279.5keV by using the mixing ratios of $121.1{\sim}279.5keV$ cascade. Subsequently, it is determined that 25.56% electric quadrupole transition is involved in the state of 279.5keV.

  • This study is a study on the characteristics and analysis of the reflected signals about the target in the VHF band. In advance, the RCS(Radar Cross Section) characteristics of the target were analyzed by using the CST electromagnetic analysis tool, and the target was detected by using the Bi-Static method, and the change in the signal-to-noise ratio was tested. The test results show similar results with no significant fluctuations in the signal-to-noise ratio characteristics for the detection of signals reflected on the target, such as the results for RCS analysis according to the pre-incidence angle. In the future, this study will be used for RCS analysis of the targets and target detection of Radar in VHF/UHF band with relatively large wavelength compared to the X band.

  • In this paper, we consider an interference scenario and interference simulation method of intra-wireless vessel communications using SEAMCAT (Spectrum Engineering Advanced Monte-Carlo Analysis) simulator. The interference between electromagnetic equipment and low power radio apparatus can deteriorate a stability of vessel system and it is necessary to analyze the interference probability between radio devices. The proposed simulation method in the 13.56MHz ISM frequency band shows that the interference effect can be minimized when the distance between the devices is greater than 4.7m and 2.7m in case that the victim receiver (VR) are RFID and remote control(RC) toy, respectively. The proposed interference scenario and simulation method are expected to be helpful in the interference probability analysis and regulation policy in the ISM frequency band.

  • We investigated the protective effects of chlorogenic acid (CGA), a polyphenol compound, on oxidative damage induced by UVB exposure on human HaCaT cells. In a cell-free system, CGA scavenged 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radicals, superoxide anions, hydroxyl radicals, and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by hydrogen peroxide and ultraviolet B (UVB). Furthermore, CGA absorbed electromagnetic radiation in the UVB range (280-320 nm). UVB exposure resulted in damage to cellular DNA, as demonstrated in a comet assay; pre-treatment of cells with CGA prior to UVB irradiation prevented DNA damage and increased cell viability. Furthermore, CGA pre-treatment prevented or ameliorated apoptosis-related changes in UVB-exposed cells, including the formation of apoptotic bodies, disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential, and alterations in the levels of the apoptosis-related proteins Bcl-2, Bax, and caspase-3. Our findings suggest that CGA protects cells from oxidative stress induced by UVB radiation.

  • The conventional fixed gain PI controller is very sensitive to step change of command speed, parameter variation and load disturbances. The precise speed control of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor(IPMSM) drive becomes a complex issue due to nonlinear coupling among its winding currents and the rotor speed as well as the nonlinear electromagnetic developed torque. Therefore, there exists a need to tune the PI controller parameters on-line to ensure optimum drive performance over a wide range of operating conditions. This paper proposes hybrid intelligent-PI(HIPI) controller of IPMSM drive using adaptive learning mechanism(ALM) and fuzzy neural network(FNN). The proposed controller is developed to ensure accurate speed control of IPMSM drive under system disturbances and estimation of speed using artificial neural network(ANN) controller. The PI controller parameters are optimized by ALM-FNN at all possible operating condition in a closed loop vector control scheme, The validity of the proposed controller is verified by results at different dynamic operating conditions.
