  • In this paper, we analyze theoritically the propagation and radiation characteristics for elliptical corrugated waveguides. The solutions of wave equations in an elliptic cylinder system are obtained in terms of Mathieu functions of 1st and 2nd kind. The electromagnetic fields in the elliptical corrugated waveguide can be represented by series and products of angular and radial Mathieu functions. By using impedence matching at the boundary between the inner region and the slot region, characteristic equations are derived. Then the characteristic equation is solved for $HE_{11}$ mode which is dominant mode in the elliptical corrugated waveguide and the fields in the aperture is calculated. And the propagation pattern for the elliptical corrugated waveguides is calculated through the field equivalence principle.

  • This paper describes the characteristics of electromagnetic wave propagation in power transformer. A transformer which is similar to 154 kV single phase on-site transformer unit was provided for the purpose of the experiment. The 12 dielectric windows on the transformer enclosure to install UHF (ultra high frequency) sensors and the full scale mock ups of winding and the core were also equipped in the transformer. Every sensors to be installed to the transformer was tested and verified whether they show same characteristics or not before the experiment. A discharge gap which was used as a PD (partial discharge) source moved to several necessary locations in the transformer to simulate dielectric defects. Propagation times of electromagnetic wave signal from PD source to sensors decided by the routes of both reflection phenomenon and diffraction phenomenon were compared each other. The experimental results showed propagation route of the PD signal makes an effect on the frequency spectrum of front part of the signal and the magnitude of the signal and propagation time of the signal when the signal is captured on the sensor.

  • The leaky dispersion characteristics of a circular dielectric rod were investigated using Davidenko's method for several lower-order transverse magnetic(TM) modes. The normalized complex propagation constants were precisely determined and their tolerances below $10^{-10}$ compared with zero for both real and imaginary parts. It was also checked whether the normalized complex propagation constants obtained represented forward leaky waves. The leaky modes existing below the cutoff frequency of the guided mode were classified as a nonphysical mode, reactive mode, antenna mode, and spectral gap based on a precise determination of the complex propagation constants. Finally, the effects of the dielectric constant and radius of the dielectric rod on the leaky dispersion characteristics were also considered.

  • This paper deals with the measurement and analysis of radio characteristic of 424 MHz for using the automation of transmission and supply of electric power, ana automatic meter reading(AMR). Normally radio propagation characteristic is the base of system design, performance evaluation and choice of position of the base station in wireless communication. It is the most accurate way to design a base station through practical measurements, but it costs much time, money and engineers. So, we developed 424 MHz short range wave propagation model for AMR service.

  • In this paper, acceleration techniques for a three dimensional ray tracing method are presented. Ray tracing methods are widely adopted to obtain radio propagation channel models, however calculation times increase with the number of scatters such as buildings, hills and mountains. Various techniques are proposed in combination of ray tube concept.

  • The fundamental conception in physics of the propagation of the electromagnetic wave polarization in matter is newly understood as the cardinal keyword in free-space quantum communication technology and cosmology in astrophysics. Interactive visualization of the propagation mechanism of polarized electromagnetism in a medium with its helicity has accordingly received attention from scientists exploiting the protocol of quantum key distribution (QKD) to guarantee unconditional security in cryptography communication. We have provided a dynamic polarization platform for presenting the polarization modes of a transverse electromagnetic wave, converting the state of polarization through the arrangement of optical elements, using Jones vectors calculations in Methematica. The platform graphically simulates the mechanism of production and propagation of the polarized waves in a medium while satisfying Maxwell's equations.

  • The UHF electromagnetic waves excited by PD pulses propagate along the GIS busbar not only TEM mode, but also TE and TM mode. Generally the waves detected by the UHF sensors are those of high order modes and such waves can only propagate higher than cut-off frequency. In this paper, the cut-off frequency of 362[kV] GIS for each modes is computed and the electromagnetic field of each propagation modes is simulated by FEM(Finite Element Method) program. Frequency band of each TEmn/TMmn modes was determinated by simulation results and was discussed optimal position of UHF sensor from this results.

  • In this paper, we have proposed discrete ray tracing method (DRTM) for numerical analysis of characteristics of electromagnetic propagation along 2D random rough surfaces. The point of the present method is to discretize not only rough surface but also ray tracing. The former helps saving computer memories and the latter does simplifying ray searching algorithm resulting in saving computation time. Numerical calculations are carried out for 2D random rough surfaces, and electric field distributions are shown to check the effectiveness of the proposed DRTM.

  • Mathematical aspects of the electromagnetic surface-wave propagation are examined for the dielectric core consisting of multiple sub-layers, which are embedded in the gap between the two bounding cladding metals. For this purpose, the linear problem with a partial differential wave equation is formulated into a nonlinear eigenvalue problem. The resulting eigenvalue is found to exist only for a certain combination of the material densities and the number of the multiple sub-layers. The implications of several limiting cases are discussed in terms of electromagnetic characteristics.

  • The radar method is becoming one of the major nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques for concrete structures. Numerical modeling of electromagnetic wave is needed to analyze radar measurement results and to study the influence of measurement parameters on the radar measurements. Finite difference-time domain (FD-TD) method is used to simulate electromagnetic wave propagation through concrete specimens. Three concrete specimens with a 25 mm delamination embedded at 25 mm, 50 mm, and 75mm depth are modeled in 3-dimension. Also, thickness change of delamination and permittivity change are modeled.
