  • Background: Anterior atlantoaxial subluxation (AAS) is a frequent phenomenon in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). AAS compresses the C2 ganglion or nerve and is a cause of posterior neck pain or occipital headache. Methods: We selected RA patients that had developed posterior neck pain or occipital headache caused by AAS. AAS was diagnosed by an increase of ADI (atlantodental interval). A distance of 3 mm or more was considered significant. Patients with vertical subluxation or symptoms suggestive of myelopathy were excluded. Before C2 RF ganglionotomy, we proceeded with a C2 ganglion block or greater occipital nerve block used by local anesthetics. For C2 RF ganglionotomy, the patient was placed in the supine position on a fluoroscopic table. A 100 mm, 4 mm active tip electrode was chosen. Following sensory stimulation at 0.2 to 0.6 V, the lesion was performed at a temperature of $60^{\circ}C$ to $65^{\circ}C$ for 60 sec. We followed up the patient after 6 months later. Results: All cases were female and the average duration of RA was 8.5 years. The duration of posterior neck pain or occipital headache was 1-8 months. The average ADI was 4.2 mm and the McGregor index was 3.3 mm on the average. In all cases, the score on the 4 point Likert scale was 4 (pain free) during the follow-up period. Conclusions: We found that the occipital headache or posterior neck pain caused by AAS in rheumatoid arthritis patients was alleviated over a short term follow up. C2 RF ganglionotomy is suggested as an effective palliative treatment for AAS in RA patients.

  • The crystallization behavior of amorphous silicon (a-Si) film was investigated by using Cu-field aided lateral crystallization (Cu-FALC) process below $450^{\circ}C$. The lateral crystallization was induced from the Cu deposited region outside of pattern toward the Cu-free region inside of the pattern by applying an electric field during heat treatment. As expected, the lateral crystallization toward Cu-free region proceeded from negative toward positive electrode side. The occurrence of Cu-FALC phenomenon was interpreted in terms of dominant diffusing species in the reaction between Cu and Si. Even at the annealing temperature of $350^{\circ}C$, the large dendrite-shaped branches were formed in the crystallized region and the polarity in the lateral crystallization was clearly observed. Consequently, we could successfully crystallize the a-Si at the temperature as low as $350^{\circ}C$ by an electric field of 30 V/cm with fast crystallization velocity of 12 $\mu$m/h.

  • This study examined the effects of carbon surface modification by the epoxy resin coating on the electrochemical performance. The mesocarbon microbeads(MCMB) carbon was surface-modified by coating the epoxy resin and its electrochemical properties as an anode was examined. The surface coating of MCMB was carried out by refluxing the MCMB powders in a dilute H2SO4 solution, and mixing them with the epoxy resin-dissolved tetrahydrofuran(THF) solution. Under heat-treatment of the coated MCMB at the temperature over $1000^{\circ}C$, the epoxy-resin coating layer was converted into amorphous phase which was identified by a high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM). The epoxy resin coated MCMB has higher Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, higher charge/ discharge capacity and better cycleability than a raw MCMB without coating. The reason for the enhancement of cell performance by the epoxy resin coating were considered as the epoxy resin coating layer plays an important role to be a barrier for carbon reacting with electrolyte and to retard the formation of passivation layer.

  • The Electrocoagulation-Flotation (ECF) process has great potential in wastewater treatment. ECF technology is effective in the removal of colloidal particles, oil-water emulsion, organic pollutants such as microalgae, and heavy metals. Numerous studies have been conducted on ECF; however, many of them used a conventional plate-type aluminum anode. In this study, we determined the effect of changing operational parameters such as power supply time, applied current, NaCl concentration, and pH on the turbidity removal efficiency of kaoline. We also determined the effects of different electrolyte types (NaCl, $MgSO_4$, $CaCl_2$, $Na_2SO_4$, and tap water), as well as the differences caused by using a plate-type and mesh-type aluminum anode, on the turbidity removal efficiency. The results showed that the optimal values of ECF time, applied current, NaCl concentration, and pH were 5 min, 0.35 A, 0.4 g/L NaCl in distilled water, and pH 7, respectively. The results also revealed that the turbidity removal efficiency of kaoline in different electrolytes decreased in the following sequence, given the same conductivity: tap water > $CaCl_2$ > $MgSO_4$ > NaCl > $Na_2SO_4$. The turbidity removal efficiency of the mesh-type aluminum anode was significantly greater than the plate-type aluminum anode.

  • Combination therapy using chloroquine (CQ) and azithromycin (AZM) has drawn great attention due to its potential anti-viral activity against SARS-CoV-2. However, clinical trials have revealed that the co-administration of CQ and AZM resulted in severe side effects, including cardiac arrhythmia, in patients with COVID-19. To elucidate the cardiotoxicity induced by CQ and AZM, we examined the effects of these drugs based on the electrophysiological properties of human embryonic stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hESC-CMs) using multi-electrode arrays. CQ treatment significantly increased the field potential duration, which corresponds to prolongation of the QT interval, and decreased the spike amplitude, spike slope, and conduction velocity of hESC-CMs. AZM had no significant effect on the field potentials of hESC-CMs. However, CQ in combination with AZM greatly increased the field potential duration and decreased the beat period and spike slope of hESC-CMs when compared with CQ monotherapy. In support of the clinical data suggesting the cardiovascular side effects of the combination therapy of CQ and AZM, our results suggest that AZM reinforces the cardiotoxicity induced by CQ in hESC-CMs.

  • Corrosion has been around for all of recorded history. Cathodic protection is the electrical solution to the corrosion problem. Corrosion is not exactly a new topic. It has been around since the beginning of time. Corrosion is simply the loss of material resulting from current leaving a metal, following through a medium, and returning to the metal at a different point. Corrosion takes many forms and has various names, such as oxidation, rust, chemical, and bacteria action. Regardless of the agent, all corrosion is the result of electrical current flow. Various methods are used to treat corrosion or to try to prevent ti. Some of these include chemical treatment. coatings, and electrical current. Especially, proper impressed current can stop corrosive action on the protected surface. In this article, we introduce the Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) Control and monitoring system developed by ourselves. The ICCP system is composed of a power supply, anode, reference electrode and controller. The main issue is to control the current flow on the desired value such that it is possible to force a metal to be more negative(cathodic) than the natural state. From the this process, we can achieve the cathodic protection. Of course, in the developed system, the necessary functions are possessed, such as remote control, monitoring of system fault detection etc. Some experimental results show the system performance and usefulness.

  • Recycling process involving mechanical, thermal, hydrometallurgical, and sol-gel step has been applied to recover cobalt and lithium from spent lithium ion batteries and to synthesize LiCoO$_2$from leach liquor as cathodic active materials. Electrode materials containing lithium and cobalt could be concentrated with 2-step thermal and mechanical treatment. Leaching behaviors of the lithium and cobalt in nitric acid media was investigated in terms of reaction variables. Hydrogen peroxide in 1 M HNO$_3$solution turned out to be an effective reducing agent by enhancing the leaching efficiency. O f many possible processes to produce LiCoO$_2$, the amorphous citrate precursor process (ACP) has been applied to synthesize powders with a large specific surface area and an exact stoichiometry. After leaching used LiCoO$_2$with nitric acid, the molar ratio of Li/Co in the leach liquor was adjusted at 1.1 by adding a fresh LiNO$_3$solution. Then, 1 M citric acid solution at a 100% stoichiometry was also added to prepare a gelatinous precursor. When the precursor was calcined at 95$0^{\circ}C$ for 24 hr, purely crystalline LiCoO$_2$was successfully obtained. The particle size and specific surface area of the resulting crystalline powders were 20 пm and 30 $\textrm{cm}^2$/g, respectively The LiCoO$_2$powder was proved to have good characteristics as cathode active materials in charge/discharge capacity and cyclic performance.

  • Solid oxide fuel cells are clean, pollution-free technology for the electrochemical generation of electricity at high efficiency. Specially, the polarization resistance between electrolyte and electrode of SOFC unit cell is of importance, because it is desirable to develop SOFC operating at intermediate temperature below $800^{\circ}C$. The LSCF cathode prepared using modified oxalate method was investigated with different electrolyte. A precursor was prepared with oxalic acid, ethanol and $NH_4OH$ solution. The LSCF precursor was prepared at $80^{\circ}C$, and pH control was 2, 6, 8, 9 and 10. The precursor powder was calcined at $800^{\circ}C$, $1000^{\circ}C$ and $1200^{\circ}C$ for 4hrs. The crystal of LSCF powders show single phase at pH 2, 6, 8 and 9, and the average particle size was about $3{\mu}m$. The LSCF cathode with heat treatment at $1200^{\circ}C$ showed a plot of electric conductivity versus temperature. Unit cell prepared from the LSCF cathode, buffer layer between cathode and electrolyte and the LSGM, YSZ, ScSZ and CeSZ electrolyte. Also interface reaction between LSCF, buffer layer and electrolyte were measured by EPMA and the polarization resistance for unit cell with cycle measure using a Solatron 1260 analyzer.

  • It is possble to study charge transfer property which is caused by height variation because we can see the organic materials barrier height and STM tip by organic materials energy band gap. Here, we investigated the negative differential resistance(NDR) and charge transfer property of self-assembled 4,4-Di(ethynylphenyl)-2'-nitro-1-(thioacetyl)benzene, which has been well known as a conducting molecule. Self-assembly monolayers(SAMs) were prepared on Au(111), which had been thermally deposited onto pre-treatment($H_{2}SO_{4}:H_{2}O_{2}$=3:1) Si. The Au substrate was exposed to a 1 mM/l solution of 1-dodecanethiol in ethanol for 24 hours to form a monolayer. After thorough rinsing the sample, it was exposed to a $0.1{\mu}M/1$ solution of 4,4-Di(ethynylphenyl)-2'-nitro-1-(thioacetyl)benzene in dimethylformamide(DMF) for 30 min and kept in the dark during immersion to avoid photo-oxidation. After the assembly, the samples were removed from the solutions, rinsed thoroughly with methanol, acetone, and $CH_{2}Cl_{2}$, and finally blown dry with $N_2$. Under these conditions, we measured electrical properties of self-assembly monolayers(SAMs) using ultra high vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy(UHV-STM). The applied voltages were from -1.50 V to -1.20 V with 298 K temperature. The vacuum condition is $6{\times}10^{-8}$ Torr. As a result, we found that NDR and charge transfer property by a little change of height when the voltage is applied between STM tip and electrode.

  • Aluminum alloys have poor corrosion resistance compared to the pure aluminum due to the additive elements. Thus, anodizing technology artificially generating thick oxide films are widely applied nowadays in order to improve corrosion resistance. Anodizing is one of the surface modification techniques, which is commercially applicable to a large surface at a low price. However, most studies up to now have focused on its commercialization with hardly any research on the assessment and improvement of the physical characteristics of the anodized films. Therefore, this study aims to select the optimum temperature of sulfuric electrolyte to perform excellent corrosion resistance in the harsh marine environment through electrochemical experiment in the seawater upon generating porous films by variating the temperatures of sulfuric electrolyte. To fabricate uniform porous film of 5083 aluminum alloy, we conducted electro-polishing under the 25 V at $5^{\circ}C$ condition for three minutes using mixed solution of ethanol (95 %) and perchloric (70 %) acid with volume ratio of 4:1. Afterward, the first step surface modification was performed using sulfuric acid as an electrolyte where the electrolyte concentration was maintained at 10 vol.% by using a jacketed beaker. For anode, 5083 aluminum alloy with thickness of 5 mm and size of $2cm{\times}2cm$ was used, while platinum electrode was used for cathode. The distance between the two was maintained at 3 cm. Anodic polarization test was performed at scan rate of 2 mV/s up to +3.0 V vs open circuit potential in natural seawater. Surface morphology was compared using 3D analysis microscope to observe the damage behavior. As a result, the case of surface modification showed a significantly lower corrosion current density than that without modification, indicating excellent corrosion resistance.
