  • SA508 low-alloy steel for a reactor vessel was exposed to primary water in a pressurized water reactor (PWR) plant because the cladding layer of type 309 stainless steel for the RPV was removed, due to an accident in which the detachment of the thermal sleeve occurred. The major advantage of the electrochemical deposition (ECD) Ni plating technique is that the reactor pressure vessel can be repaired without significant thermal effects, and Ni has solid corrosion resistance that can withstand boric acid. The corrosion rate assessment of the damaged part was performed, and its trend was analyzed. Essential variables of the Ni plating for repair of the damaged part were derived. These conditions are applicable variables for the repair plating device, and have been carefully adjusted using the repair plating device. The process for establishing ASME technical standards called Code Case N-840 is described. The process of developing Ni-plating devices, and the electroplating procedure specification (EPS) are described.

  • Objectives: Feasibility of electrochemical oxidation of the aqueous non-biodegradable wastewater such as cationic dye Rhodamine B (RhB) has been investigated in an electrochemical reactor with solid polymer electrolyte (SPE). Methods: Nafion 117 cationic exchange membrane as SPE has been used. Anode/Nafion/cathode sandwiches were constructed by sandwiching Nafion between two dimensionally stable anodes (JP202 electrode). Experiments were conducted to examine the effects of applied current (0.5~2.0 A), supporting electrolyte type (0.2 N NaCl, $Na_2SO_4$, and 1.0 g/L NaCl), initial RhB concentration (2.5~30.0 mg/L) on RhB and COD degradation and $UV_{254}$ absorbance. Results: Experimental results showed that an increase of applied current in electrolysis reaction with solid polymer electrolyte has resulted in the increase of RhB and $UV_{254}$ degradation. Performance for RhB degradation by electrolyte type was best with NaCl 0.2 N followed by SPE, and $Na_2SO_4$. However, the decrease of $UV_{254}$ absorbance of RhB was different from RhB degradation: SPE > NaCl 0.2 N > $Na_2SO_4$. RhB and $UV_{254}$ absorbance decreased linearly with time regardless of the initial concentration. The initial RhB and COD degradation in electrolysis reaction using SPE showed a pseudo-first order kinetics and rate constants were 0.0617 ($R^2=0.9843$) and 0.0216 ($R^2=0.9776$), respectively. Conclusions: Degradation of RhB in the electrochemical reactor with SPE can be achieved applying electrochemical oxidation. Supporting electrolyte has no positive effect on the final $UV_{254}$ absorbance and COD degradation. Mineralization of COD may take a relatively longer time than that of the RhB degradation.

  • The objective of this research is to investigate the electrochemical oxidation process for nitrogen removal in wastewater involving chloride ion and nitrogen compounds. The process experiment of electrochemical oxidation was conducted by using the stainless steel tube type reactor and the $Ti/IrO_2$ as anode. Free chlorine production and current efficiency variation for total nitrogen removal was compared depending on whether electrolyte is added, and the nitrogen type distribution under an operating condition. When chloride was added as electrolyte, it was found that production of free chlorine increased and the concentration of the chloride decreased as retention time passed. The concentration of chloride in influent decreased from 1,660 to 1,198 mg/L at the current density of $6.7A/dm^2$, while concentration of free chlorine increased to 132 mg/L. Current efficiency in removal of ammonium nitrogen was increased when chloride was dosed as electrolyte. It was observed that ammonium nitrogen was oxidized to nitrite and nitrate through electrochemical oxidation and that the concentration of total nitrogen in influent was reduced from 22.58 to 4.00 mg/L at the short retention time of 168 seconds through the electrochemical oxidation of nitrogen.

  • In this study, an electrical conductive carbon fiber was used as a biofilter matrix to electrochemically improve the biofilter function. A bioreactor system was composed of carbon fiber (anode), titanium ring, porcelain ring, inorganic nutrient reservoir, and VOC reservoir. Electric DC power of 1.5 volt was charged to the carbon fiber anode (CFA) to induce the electrochemical oxidation potential on the biofilter matrix, but not to the carbon fiber (CF). We tested the effects of electrochemical oxidation potential charged to the CFA on the biofilm structure, the bacterial growth, and the activity for metabolic oxidation of VOCs to $CO_2$, According to the SEM image, the biofilm structure developed in the CFA appeared to be greatly different from that in the CF. The bacterial growth, VOCs degradation, and metabolic oxidation of VOCs to $CO_2$ in the CFA were more activated than those in the CF. On the basis of these results, we propose that the biofilm structure can be improved, and the bacterial growth and the bacterial oxidation activity of VOCs can be activated by the electrochemical oxidation potential charged to a biofilter matrix.

  • As a reactor coolant pump(RCP) is operated in the nuclear power system for a long time. so its surface is continuously contaminated by radioactive scales. In order to perform regular or emergency repair about RCP internals a special decontamination process should be used to reduce the radiation from the RCP surface by means of chemical cleaning. In this study, applicable possibility in chemical decontamination for RCP was investigated on the various materials. The STS 304 showed the best electrochemical properties for corrosion resistance than other materials. However, the pitting corrosion was slightly generated in both STS 415 and STS 431 with the increasing numbers of cycle and intergranular corrosion were sporadically observed. The size of their pitting corrosion and intergranular corrosion were also increased with increasing cycle numbers.

  • In this study, applicable possibility in chemical decontamination for reactor coolant pump(RCP) was investigated for the various stainless steels. The stainless steel(STS) 304 showed the best electrochemical properties for corrosion current density and the lowest weight loss ratio in chemical decontamination process model 3-3 than other materials. The weightloss quantity in chemical decontamination process model 3-3 presents the lowest value compare to the other chemical decontamination process model 1, 2, 3-1 and 3-2. In the case of SEM observation, the pitting corrosion was generated in both STS 415 and STS 431 with the increasing numbers of cycle. The intergranular corrosion in STS 431 was sporadically observed. The sizes of their pitting corrosion were also increased with increasing cycle numbers.

  • When fossil fuels are burned they produce CO gas because of incomplete combustion. If the CO gas reacts with the hemoglobin in the red blood cells, it may result in death or sequelae. Generally, the CO gas is eliminated in the form of the $$$CO_2$ gas by the oxidation reaction over the platinum catalyst. In this study, the electrochemical CO removal was investgated by using the solid electrolyte cell reactor, the type of which was represented as reactants$/Pt/Y_2O_3-ZrO_2/Pt/Air$. If the overpotential was applied to the platinum working electrode, the conversion could be changed with the overpotential applied. It was found that the oxidation rate could be increased 2.8 times higher than that of the normal condition, i. e. under open circuit conditions when $P_{co}/P_{O_2}$ was 0.5 and overpotential was 0.9V. From these results, it is concluded that the reactor used in this study is more efficient than conventional catalytic reactors.

  • The microstructure and texture of three 316L foils of 25 ㎛ thickness, which were subjected to different manufacturing process, were systematically characterized using advance analytical techniques. Then, the electrochemical property of the 316L foils in simulated pressurized water reactor (PWR) solution was analyzed using potentiodynamic polarization. The results showed that final rolling strain and annealing temperature had evident effect on grain size, fraction of recrystallization, grain boundary type and texture distribution. It was suggested that large final rolling strain could transfer Brass texture to Copper texture; low annealing temperature could limit the formation of preferable orientations in the rolling process to reduce anisotropy. Potentiodynamic polarization test showed that all samples exhibited good corrosion performance in the simulated primary PWR solution.
