Here I present a formula which converts a constant phase element (CPE) to its equivalent capacitor. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is capable of resolving a complex electrochemical processes into its faradaic and non-faradaic elements, and the non-faradaic process is frequently described as a CPE in place of a capacitor due to the non-ideality. Being described as a capacitor, the non-faradaic element provides information by its capacitance, but a CPE cannot provide a physical meaning. In order to solve the problem, the CPE has been dealt with as an equivalent capacitor of which the capacitance provides practical information. Succeeding the two methods previously suggested, a new conversion method is suggested in this report. While the previous ones manipulate only the CPE, the new method takes both the CPE and its related resistor into account for conversion. By comparing the results obtained by the three methods, we learn that the results are nearly the same within tolerable ranges, and conclude that any of the method choices is acceptable depending on the conditions of the system of interest.

Electrochemical properties and performance of composites performed by incorporating metal oxide or metal hydroxide on carbon materials based on graphene and carbon nanotube (CNT) were analyzed. From the surface analysis by field emission scanning electron microscopy and field emission transmission electron microscopy, it was confirmed that graphene, CNT and metal materials are well dispersed in the ternary composites. In addition, structural and elemental analyses of the composite were conducted. The electrochemical characteristics of the ternary composites were analyzed by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge tests, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 6 M KOH, or $1M\;Na_2SO_4$ electrolyte solution. The highest specific capacitance was $1622F\;g^{-1}$ obtained for NiCo-containing graphene with NiCo ratio of 2 to 1 (GNiCo 2:1) and the GNS/single-walled carbon $nanotubes/Ni(OH)_2$ (20 wt%) composite had the maximum specific capacitance of $1149F\;g^{-1}$. The specific capacitance and rate-capability of the $CNT/MnO_2/reduced$ graphene oxide (RGO) composites were improved as compared to the $MnO_2/RGO$ composites without CNTs. The $MnO_2/RGO$ composite containing 20 wt% CNT with reference to RGO exhibited the best specific capacitance of $208.9F\;g^{-1}$ at a current density of $0.5A\;g^{-1}$ and 77.2% capacitance retention at a current density of $10A\;g^{-1}$.

In this paper, organic solvent electrolytes were prepared by a mixture of propylene carbonate (PC), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate ($TEABF_4$)s to evaluate the ionic properties of propylene carbonate (PC)/dimethyl carbonate (DMC) mixtures as solvents for a capacitor application, in view of improving the electrochemical performances. The bulk resistance and interfacial resistance of the mixture electrolytes were investigated using an AC impedance method. The morphology of carbon-based electrodes which were contained in different electrolytes was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) method. From the experimental results, by increasing the FEC content, capacitance of electrodes was increased, and the interfacial resistance was decreased. In particular, by a content of 2 vol % FEC in 0.2 M $TEABF_4$ PC/DMC solvent, the electrolyte showed the superior capacitance. However, when FEC content exceeds 2 vol %, the capacitance was decreased and the interfacial resistance was increased.
Ni-benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid based metal organic frameworks were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method and thermally treated at various temperature. The electrochemical performance of composites was investigated using cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Among all prepared composites, the samples annealed at $250^{\circ}C$ showed the highest capacitance with a low resistance, and high cycle stability. It was possible to obtain the low electrical resistance and high electric conductivity of the electrode by improved microstructure and morphology after the thermal annealing at $250^{\circ}C$. The samples annealed at $250^{\circ}C$ also displayed the maximum specific capacitance with a value of $953Fg^{-1}$ at a current density of $0.66A/g^{-1}$ in 6 M KOH electrolyte. Moreover, a 86.4% of the initial specific capacitance of the composite was maintained after 3,000 times charge-discharge cycle tests. Based on these properties, it can be concluded that the composite could be applied as potential supercapacitor electrode materials.
In this work, porous carbon based electrodes are prepared by carbonization using poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/carbon nanotube (CNT) composites to further increase the specific capacitance for supercapacitors. Electrode materials investigate the aspects of specific capacitance, pore size distribution and surface area: influence of carbonization temperatures of PVDF/CNT composites. The electrochemical properties are investigated by cyclic voltammetry, impedance spectra, and galvanostatic charge-discharge performance with in $TEABF_4$ (tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate)/acetonitrile as non-aqueous electrolyte. From the results, the highest value of specific capacitance of ~101 $F{\cdot}g^{-1}$ is obtained for the samples carbonized at $600^{\circ}C$. Furthermore, pore size of samples control be low 7 nm through carbonization process. It is suggested that micropores significantly contribute to the specific capacitance, resulting from improved charge transfer.
Aluminum was electrochemically etched in acid solution and the surface area was magnified by the formation of etch pits. Etched aluminum was covered with a compact and dense dielectric oxide film by anodization and applied to the aluminum electrolytic capacitor electrode. Capacitance of aluminum electrolytic capacitor is closely related with surface area, which depends on size and number of etch pits. Size of etch pits need to be controlled because inside of the pits can be buried by the formation of dielectric oxide film. In this work, the effect of ultrasound pretreatment on the aluminum etch pit formation and capacitance were investigated. Additionally, the relationship between the second etching effect on pit size and capacitance was studied.
The commercial activated carbons are typically prepared by activation from coconut shell char or coal char containing lots of inorganic impurities. They also have pore structure and pore size distribution depending on nanostructure of precursor materials. In this study, two types of commercial activated carbons were applied for EDLC electrode by removing impurities with acid treatments, and controlling pore size distribution and contents of functional group with heat treatment. The effect of the surface functional groups on electrochemical performance of the activated carbon electrodes was investigated. The initial gravimetric and volumetric capacitance of coconut based activated carbon electrode which was acid treated by $HNO_3$ and then heat treated at $800^{\circ}C$ were 90 F/g and 42 F/cc respectively showing 94% of charge-discharge efficiency. Such a good electrochemical performance can be possibly applied to the medium capacitance of EDLC.
Electrochemical properties of carbon cryogel electrode for the application of composite electrode materials mixed with metal oxide in supercapacitor have been studied. Carbon cryogels were synthesized by sol-gel polycondensation of resorcinol with form aldehyde, followed by a freeze drying, and then pyrolysis in an inert atmosphere. Physical properties of carbon cryogel were characterized by BET, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It is found that carbon cryogel is amorphous material. The electrochemical properties of carbon cryogel were measured by cyclic voltammetry as a function of concentration of liquid electrolyte, galvanostatic charge-discharge with different scan rates and electrochemical impedance measurements. The result of cyclic voltammetry indicated that the specific capacitance value of a carbon cryogel electrode was approximately 150.2 F/g (at 5 mV/s in 6M KOH electrolyte).
Sulphonated polysulphone (SPS) has been synthesized and subsequently applied as binder for graphene oxide (GO)-based electrodes for development of electrochemical supercapacitors. Electrochemical performance of the electrode was investigated using cyclic voltammetry in 1M Na2SO4 and 1M KOH solution. The fabricated supercapacitors gave a specific capacitance of 161.6 and 216.8 F/g with 215.4 W/kg and 450 W/kg of power density, in 1M Na2SO4 and 1M KOH solutions, respectively. This suggests that KOH is a better electrolyte than Na2SO4 for studying the electrochemical behavior of electroactive material, and also suggests SPS is a good binder for fabrication of a GO based electrode.
