  • In this work, manganese dioxide ($Mn_3O_4$)/carbon black (CB) composites (Mn-CBs) were prepared by an in situ coating method as electrical fillers and the effect of the Mn-CBs on the electrical performance of activated carbon (AC)-based electrodes was investigated. Structural features of Mn-CBs produced via in situ coating using a $KMnO_4$ solution were confirmed by XRD and TEM images. The electrical performances, including cv curves, charge-discharge behaviors, and specific capacitance of the ACs/Mn-CBs, were determined by cyclic voltammograms. It was found that the composites of $Mn_3O_4$ and CBs were successfully formed by in situ coating method. ACs/Mn-CBs showed higher electrical performance than that of AC electrodes fabricated with conventional CBs due to the pesudocapacitance reaction of manganese oxides in the aqueous electrolyte. Consequently, it is anticipated that the incorporation of $Mn_3O_4$ into CBs could facilitate the utilization of CBs as electrical filler, leading to enhanced electrochemical performance of AC electrodes for supercapacitors.

  • Electrochemical behaviors of acetaminophen at a muti-wall carbon nano-tube composite film modified glassy carbon electrode were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry and chronocoulometry. Compared with that obtained at the unmodified electrode, the peak currents were enhanced significantly, and the oxidation peak shifted towards more negative potential with the reduction peak shifted positively. The peak-to-peak separation turned narrow, and suggested that the reversibility was improved greatly. Experimental parameters, such as scan rate, pH and accumulation conditions were optimized. It was found that a maximum current response can be obtained at pH = 5.0 after accumulation at -0.50 V for 80 s. The oxidation peak current was found to be linearly related to acetaminophen concentration over the range of $5.0{\times}10^{-7}\;\sim\;1.0{\times}10^{-4}$ mol $L^{-1}$ with a detection limit of $5.0{\times}10^{-8} $mol $L^{-1}$. A convenient and sensitive electrochemical method was developed for the determination of acetaminophen in a commercial paracetamol oral solution. Its practical application demonstrated that it has good selectivity and high sensitivity.

  • In this study, electrochemical damage behaviors with flow rate were investigated for anodized 5083 aluminum alloy in seawater. As the results of anodic polarization experiments and potentiostatic experiments at +1.0 V (vs. SSCE), the non-flow condition presented largely damaged surface resulting from a tendency of local pitting damage. Under various flow rate conditions, however, less surface damages under the application of anodic potential was obtained which is attributed to no accumulation of $H^+$ and $Cl^-$ ions on the surface. On the other hand, the results of the potentiostatic experiments at -1.0 V (vs. SSCE) with flow rate showed that anodized 5083 aluminum alloys could achieve the effective cathodic protection by low cathodic protection current density less than $2.61{\times}10^{-7}A/cm^2$ even under high flow rate of 1 m/s.

  • This paper presents the electrochemistry and molecular orbital (MO) picture of a series of conformationally-restricted thioxantone derivatives. A series of $C_2-substituted$ thioxanthones were examined to probe the electronic influence of the substituent on the electrooxidation and electroreduction sites (i.e., on the electron densities at the 10-and 9-positions), respectively. In the presence of "electrophoric" groups such as C=O and S, characteristic electrochemical reduction and oxidation responses are observed. The electrochemical reaction was diffusion-controlled, because the $I_p/{\upsilon}^{1/2}$ ratio was constant for the anodic and cathodic wave of thioxantone derivatives. These substituent effects are presented in terms of correlations of oxidation (or reduction) potentials with the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), or lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energies, respectively. There is good correlation between energies of the HOMO vs. $E_{pa}^{(+)}$ and energies of the LUMO vs. $E_{pc}^{(-)}$. Frontier Molecular Orbital (FMO) is changed by the functional group of thioxanthones. FMO energy level was offered us the information about the electron transfer direction, and the coefficient of FMO was offered the information about the electron transfer position. Sulfur atom has an important effect on oxidation potential, $E_{pa}^{(+)}$ and the carbonyl carbon has an important effect on reduction potential, $E_{pc}^{(-)}$. Therefore we were appreciated that the contribution of sulfur atom for the $E_{pa}^{(+)}$ and HOMO energies is larger than the contribution of carbonyl group for the $E_{pc}^{(-)}$ and LUMO energies.

  • Due to advancement of the industry, operation of a device in a harsh environment is increasing. Especially, the marine environment contains Cl- ions which causes localized corrosion such as pitting and crevice corrosion of stainless steel and various metals. In this study, electrochemical corrosion behaviors of austenitic stainless steel (STS 316L) and nickel alloy (Inconel 600) with different seawater concentrations (fresh water, seawater, mixed water) were investigated. The STS 316L and Inconel 600 were etched in 10% oxalic acid and composed of an austenitic phase. Results of Tafel analysis in seawater showed that STS 316L and Inconel 600 presented the highest corrosion current densities of 7.75 × 10-4 mA/cm2 and 1.11 × 10-4 mA/cm2 and the most negative pitting potentials of 0.94 V and 1.06 V, respectively. The maximum damage depths and surface damage ratio by pitting corrosion increased with chloride concentration. The STS 316L had higher PREN than Inconel 600. However, the surface damage and weight loss of Inconel 600 were superior to STS 316L. It was difficult to compare the pitting resistance of STS 316L based on Fe and Inconel 600 based on Ni with PREN simply.

  • Ni-benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid based metal organic frameworks were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method and thermally treated at various temperature. The electrochemical performance of composites was investigated using cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Among all prepared composites, the samples annealed at $250^{\circ}C$ showed the highest capacitance with a low resistance, and high cycle stability. It was possible to obtain the low electrical resistance and high electric conductivity of the electrode by improved microstructure and morphology after the thermal annealing at $250^{\circ}C$. The samples annealed at $250^{\circ}C$ also displayed the maximum specific capacitance with a value of $953Fg^{-1}$ at a current density of $0.66A/g^{-1}$ in 6 M KOH electrolyte. Moreover, a 86.4% of the initial specific capacitance of the composite was maintained after 3,000 times charge-discharge cycle tests. Based on these properties, it can be concluded that the composite could be applied as potential supercapacitor electrode materials.

  • Liquid Bi pool is a candidate electrode for an electrometallurgical process in the molten LiCl-KCl eutectic to treat the spent nuclear fuels from nuclear power plants. The electrochemical behavior of Bi3+ ions and the electrode reaction on liquid Bi pool were investigated with the cyclic voltammetry in an environment with or without BiCl3 in the molten LiCl-KCl eutectic. Experimental results showed that two redox reactions of Bi3+ on inert W electrode and the shift of cathodic peak potentials of Li+ and Bi3+ on liquid Bi pool electrode in molten LiCl-KCl eutectic. It is confirmed that the redox reaction of lithium with respect to the liquid Bi pool electrode would occur in a wide range of potentials in molten LiCl-KCl eutectic. The obtained data will be used to design the electrometallurgical process for treating actinide and lanthanide from the spent nuclear fuels and to understand the electrochemical reactions of actinide and lanthanide at liquid Bi pool electrode in the molten LiCl-KCl eutectic.

  • For given electrolytes, different behaviors of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) and anodic titanium oxide (ATO) during electrochemical thinning are explained by ionic and electronic current modes. Branched structures are unavoidably created in AAO since the switch of ionic to electronic current is slow, whereas the barrier oxide in ATO is thinned without formation of the branched structures. In addition, pore opening can be possible in ATO if chemical etching is performed after the thinning process. The thinning was optimized for complete pore opening in ATO and potential-current behavior is interpreted in terms of ionic current-electronic current switching.

  • Herein, insoluble single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) was successfully dispersed into water in the presence of a special kind of surfactant-dicetyl phosphate (DCP), subsequently, a SWNT-DCP composite film coated glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was fabricated. The electrochemical behaviors of 6-benzylaminopurine (6-BAP) at the unmodified GCE and SWNT-DCP modified GCE were examined. It is found that the SWNT-DCP modified GCE remarkably enhances the oxidation peak current of 6-BAP, indicating great potential in the determination of trace level of 6-BAP. Finally, a sensitive and simple voltammetric method with a good linear relationship in the range of ${\times}5.0\;\;10^{-8}\sim 2.5\;{\times}\;10^{-6}$ mol/L, was developed for the determination of 6-BAP. The detection limit is as low as $2.0\;{\times}\;10^{-8}$ mol/L for 3-min accumulation. This newly-proposed method was successfully demonstrated with practical samples.

  • Effects of texture on the electrochemical behaviors of single grains in polycrystalline zinc were investigated using a capillary-based micro-droplet cell. Pontiodynamic sweeps and capacity measurements were carried out in pH 9 borate buffer solution. The cyclic voltammograms and the capacity measurements on single grains with different crystallographic orientations in polycrystalline Zn showed a strong dependence of oxide growth on crystallographic grain orientation. The total charge consumed for oxide formation and the inverse capacity increased with an increase of surface packing density of grain. suggesting the oxide formation was greater on grains with higher surface packing density.
