  • Although the time dependences of the electrocatalytic activities of Pt and Pd nanoparticles during electrochemical operations have been widely studied, the time dependences under nonpolarized conditions have never been investigated in depth. This study reports the changes in the electrocatalytic activities of Pt and Pd nanoparticles with aging in air and in solution. Pt (or Pd) nanoparticle-modified electrodes are obtained by adsorbing citrate-stabilized Pt (or Pd) nanoparticles on amine-modified indium-tin oxide (ITO) electrodes, or by electrodeposition of Pt (or Pd) nanoparticles on ITO electrodes. The electrocatalytic activities of freshly prepared Pt and Pd nanoparticles in the oxygen reduction reaction slowly decrease with aging. The electrocatalytic activities decrease more slowly in solution than in air. An increase in surface contamination may cause electrocatalytic deactivation during aging. The electrocatalytic activities of long-aged Pt (or Pd) nanoparticles are significantly enhanced and recovered by NaBH4 treatment.

  • The anodic degradation of benzoquinone(BQ), a model compound for wastewater treatment was carried out using a home-made flow-through electrochemical cell with carbon fibers. To optimize the controlled current electrolysis condition of an aqueous BQ solution, the experimental variables affecting the degradation of BQ, such as the applying current, pH, reaction time, and flow rate of the BQ solution were examined. The degradation products of the oxidation reaction were identified by High Performance Liquid Chromatography and Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometer. Low molecular weight aliphatic acids, and CO2 were the major products in this experiment. The removal efficiency of BQ from the solution increased with the applying current and time. 99.23% of 1.0 × 10-2 M BQ was degraded to aliphatic acids and CO2 when the applying current is 175 mA in a 12 hr electrolysis.

  • This study presents 0-dimensional model for solid oxide fuel cells(SOFCs). The physics of the cell and the simplifying assumptions are presented, and only hydrogen participates in the electrochemical reaction. The electrical potential is predicted using this model. The Butler-Volmer equation is used to describe the activation polarization and the exchange current density is changed according to the partial pressure of reactants and the temperature. The electrical conductivities of electrodes and an electrolyte are calculated for the ohmic polarization. Material characteristics and temperature affect those factors. Analysis of concentration polarization based on transport of gaseous species through porous electrodes is incorporated in this model. Both binary diffusion and Knudsen diffusion are considered as the diffusion mechanism. For validation, simulation results at this work are compared with our experimental results and numerical results by other researchers.

  • The surface of $Li[Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}]O_2$ cathode particle was modified by lanthanum based oxide to improve electrochemical property and thermal stability. The XRD pattern of surface layer was indexed with that of $La_4NiLiO_8$. The discharge capacity of modified electrode was higher than that of pristine sample, specially at fast charge-discharge rate and high cut-off voltage. In the DSC profile of the charged sample, the generation of heat by exothermic reaction was decreased by surface modification. Such enhancement may by attributed to the presence of stable lanthanum based oxide, which effectively suppressd the reaction between electrode and electrolyte on the surface of $Li[Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}]O_2$ electrode.

  • The electrochemical behaviors of 4-(2)-thiazolylazo)-resorcinol (TAR) in acetonitrile solution was studied by DC polarography, cyclic voltammetry, controlled-potential coulometry and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The electrochemical reduction of TAR occurs in four-one electron reduction steps in acetonitrile solution. The products of the first and the third electron transfer are speculated to be a relatively stable anion radical. The second electron transfer to the dianion is followed by a chemical reaction producing a protonated species. The product of the fourth electron transfer also produces the corresponding amine compounds with a following reaction. Also every reduction wave was diffusion controlled. The first reduction wave is considerably reversible and the other waves are less reversible.

  • Fluorophosphate, $Na_2MnPO_4F$ as new cathode material was synthesized by carbothermal treatment method. Prepared $Na_2MnPO_4F$ has particle size under 100 nm and residual carbon exists in surface of $Na_2MnPO_4F$. Additional carbon coating was performed in order to increase the electrochemical properties. Even capacity and overpotential were improved by carbon coating using mechanical ball milling, the reduced crystallinity limited the drastic improvement of the electrochemical properties. To solve this problem, re-heat treatment was involved to recover crystallinity and then notable improvement of electrochemical properties was obtained. Specific amount of $Li^+$ that participates in electrochemical $Li^+$ insertion / extraction reaction, was x = 1 in $Li_xNa_{2-x}MnPO_4F$ within the voltage range of 2.0 to 4.8 V. The doubled capacity by 2 electron reaction can be obtained when NMPF is charged to higher voltage over 4.8 V.

  • This paper describes a novel hybrid surface polishing process combining non-traditional electrochemical polishing (ECP) with external artificial ultrasonic vibration. The purpose of this study is to develop an easier method for improving stainless steel surfaces. To this end, vibration electrochemical polishing (VECP), a novel ultrasonic manufacturing process, for enhancing electrochemical reaction and surface quality compared with that achieved using conventional ECP is suggested. In addition, for finding the optimized experimental conditions, the two methods are compared under various current densities. Localized roughness of the work material is measured with atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for obtaining detailed surface information.

  • Polypyrrole(PPy) was composite with MWNT to attain cycle stable by chemical method. We have been considered PPy is the ideal material for high energy density electrochemical capacitor due to pseudo capacitor reaction. In this study we found that increase in cycle life due to composite MWNT. Also PPy/MWNT composite material have resulted larger capacitance and exhibits better electrochemical behavior. The structural feature was investigated by using SEM and TEM. The PPy/CNT composite is not only a promising ultracapacitor material for energy storages but also has a good possibility because of its great capacitive properties, simple preparation and low cost.

  • In this technical note, I report the analysis of electrochemical impedance data measured with potential sweeping. Even though the instruments for voltammetric impedance measurements have been developed for decades using different approaches, their applications are limited due to the lack of well-established protocols to easily analyze voltammetry data. To fill this gap, the singular point of the specific potential is considered that is only determined by the standard/formal potential and the transfer coefficient and is independent of the kinetics and experimental parameters (including revertability) of faradaic reactions. Taking the advantage of its inertness, I suggest an approach employing the singular point as a reference to obtain general electrochemical information. As all the concepts and methods are verified with numerical simulations, this technique is expected to be applied for complex reactions involving electrochemical and chemical reaction mechanisms.

  • This research aimed to fabricate a micro structure using micro electrochemical machining (${\mu}$-ECM). with a view to that the theory of ${\mu}$-ECM is established accurately in a different way of conventional electrochemical machining. In details, if the impedance is existed in the system, it is difficult to analyze the micro electrochemical reaction efficiently in polarization curve using a potentiodynamic test. Hence, this research investigates the relationships between impedance and electric current measuring with a potentiostatic test applying to a pair or electrode as a constant potential. And this paper examines the influence of temperature of electrolyte on polarization curve for the quantitative analysis of electrochemical reactions.
