Multi-modal Wearable Device for Cardiac Arrest Detection (심정지 감지를 위한 다생체 신호 측정 웨어러블 디바이스 개발)

  • Cardiac arrest is owing to the failure of the heart that makes the blood circulation stop. Arrested blood circulation prevents the supply of the oxygen and the glucose and it results the loss of consciousness and, finally, brain death. Many public institution installed the AED for emergency treatment, but, it is not efficient when the patient is alone. In this paper, we made multiplexed wearable device for cardiac arrest detection. With this device, we measure the individual's electrocardiography, heart sound and motion. If the cardiac arrest is detected, the device make a warning horn and transmit the signal for defibrillation. We obtain 98.33% of ECG data, 94.5% of PCG data and 98.38% of IMU data accuracy for each evaluation and 93.33% accuracy for integrated evaluation.

An Analytical Comparison in Electoencephalography and Electrocardiography under Pulsed Magnetic Field and Acupuncture Stimulus on Acupoint PC9

  • We have investigated the changes of electroencephalography (EEG) and electrocardiography (ECG) under pulsed magnetic field (PMF) and acupuncture stimulus on acupoint PC9. In order to compare quantitatively the effect of PMF and acupuncture stimulus, the difference of alpha activities are calculated from EEG spectra, and the spectrum curves of ECG were analyzed in the frequency domain of heart rate variability (HRV). The increase of alpha activities after both stimuli could be explained that the impulse of stimulus on PC9 might pass through sensory nerve following meridian and approach the cerebral cortex, causing the central nervous system (CNS) to be activated for pacifying emotion and calming the mind. The decrease in sympathovagal activity of HRV after both stimuli indicates that parasympathetic nerves were activated and the sympathetic nerves were in constrained condition. These findings suggest that PMF could be patient-friendly alternative non-invasive medical treatment for influencing human physiology, in comparison with acupuncture inserting the needle and inducing nervous and anxious state to subject.

  • Contact electrodes pose threats like inflammation, metal poisoning, and allergic reaction to the user during long term ECG procedure. Therefore, we present a novel noncontact electrocardiographic electrode designed through microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) process. The proposed ECG electrode consists of small inner and large outer circular copper plates separated by thin insulator. The inner plate enables capacitive transduction of bio-potential variations on a subject’s chest into a voltage that can be processed by a signal processing board, whereas the outer plate shields the inner plate from environmental electromagnetic noise. The electrode lead wires are also coaxially designed to prevent cables from coupling to ground or electronic devices. A prototype ECG electrode has an area of about 2.324 cm2, is very flexible and does not require power to operate. The prototype ECG electrode could measure ECG at about 500 um distance from the subject’s chest.

  • The health of the human heart is commonly measured using ECG (Electrocardiography) signals. To identify any anomaly in the human heart, the time-sequence of ECG signals is examined manually by a cardiologist or cardiac electrophysiologist. Lightweight anomaly detection on ECG signals in an embedded system is expected to be popular in the near future, because of the increasing number of heart disease symptoms. Some previous research uses deep learning networks such as LSTM and BiLSTM to detect anomaly signals without any handcrafted feature. Unfortunately, lightweight LSTMs show low precision and heavy LSTMs require heavy computing powers and volumes of labeled dataset for symptom classification. This paper proposes an ECG anomaly detection system based on two level BiLSTM for acceptable precision with lightweight networks, which is lightweight and usable at home. Also, this paper presents a new threshold technique which considers statistics of the current ECG pattern. This paper's proposed model with BiLSTM detects ECG signal anomaly in 0.467 ~ 1.0 F1 score, compared to 0.426 ~ 0.978 F1 score of the similar model with LSTM except one highly noisy dataset.

  • Pimozide and haloperidol are typical antipsychotics. They share a similarity in pharmacotherapeutic and adverse effect profiles. Cardiovascular effects may be seen as alterations in heart rate, blood pressure, and cardiac conduction. Conduction disturbances may occur ranging from asymptomatic prolongation of the QT interval to fatal ventricular arrhythmia. So in the case of anti psychotics overdose, the patient must be carefully monitored by continuous electrocardiography (ECG). We experienced a 34-year-old woman of schizophrenia with recurrent ventricular tachycardia after pimozide and haloperidol overdose. Initially she was slightly drowsy, however her ECG showed normal sinus rhythm. After 6 hours on emergency department entrance, her ECG monitoring showed ventricular tachycardia and we successfully defibrillated. There were five times events of ventricular arrhythmia during the in-hospital stay. She was discharged 5 days later without any other complications.

  • Takotsubo or reverse Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is a well-known cardiac complication of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) that shows transient left ventricular wall motion abnormalities with electrocardiogram (ECG) changes. ST change followed by T inversion is a common ECG finding complicated with these disorders, left bundle branch block (LBBB) may be a potential ECG pattern which is seen. In this case, we describe the clinical profile and outcomes of a patient with LBBB and reverse Takotsubo cardiomyopathy after anesthetic induction, which was scheduled as an emergent external ventricular drainage after SAH. This is the first report of an LBBB pattern in reverse Takotsubo cardiomyopathy.

Development of Tight-fitting Upper Clothing for Measuring ECG -A Focus on Weft Reduction Rate and Subjective Assessment- (심전도 측정을 위한 밀착 의복 연구 -패턴 축소 및 주관적 평가를 중심으로-)

  • This study develops tight-fitting upper clothing to measure electrocardiography (ECG) data. Taking into consideration the elasticity of the clothing, we made 4 experimental clothes by applying to each a weft reduction rate of 40%, 50%, 60%, and 70%. The 4 experimental clothes were used to measure resting ECG, exercise ECG, and post-exercise ECG for 4 men in their 20s. We compared clothing pressures using sensors on the human body and on a dressform. Subjective wear sensations of the 4 experimental clothes were evaluated using a subjective 7-point scale (with 7 being most excellent). We measured clothing pressures by using the air type pressure (AMI 3037-2) for upper and lower chest sensors in the developed tight-fitting upper clothing. The lower chest sensor showed that the clothing pressure on a human body and dressform changed consistently as the weft reduction rate decreased. The upper chest sensor showed inconsistent changes in clothing pressure as the weft reduction rate decreased. The wearing-test result for preliminary subjects showed that the lower chest sensor was more stable than the upper chest sensor; therefore, we inserted the sensor at the lower chest position before performing ECG. Except for Subject 4, the resting ECGs were stably measured for 3 subjects (Subject 1, Subject 2, and Subject 3) in all the developed clothes (A clothing, B clothing, C clothing, and D clothing). However, D clothing showed stable ECG values after exercise. The results of the experiment showed that we could measure ECG without difficulty using clothes with a weft reduction rate of 40% when the movement was not intense; however, tight-fitting upper clothing with a weft reduction rate of 70% was necessary to measure exercise ECG and post-exercise ECG values.

  • We have done a preliminary study on the detection of ventricular late potentials using high-resolution electrocardiography. We designed a battery powered low-noise ECG amplifier. We used the XYZ lead system and the amplifier provides 3 channels of X, Y, and Z signals with a conventional gain and another 3 channels of the amplitude-limited X, Y, and Z signals with high-gain. 12-bit data acquisition system interfaces the amplifiers to a personal computer for further signal analysis. Beat alignment algorithm was implemented on the low-gain signals to synchronize the signal averaging of the high-gain amplitude-limited signals. We suggest the use of the weighted vector sum of X', Y', and Z' signals based on the SNR of each channel. We speculate that this new method will increase the accuracy of the LP detector at the expense of more complicated hardware.

  • In this study, we proposed a new method that can be measure ECG (Electrocardiography) and PPG (Photoplethysmography) in realtime on the site of the wrist for check the state of health in daily life. For convenience measurement of ECG the lead I method was used on the wrist, and omit the reference junction ECG I was measured in the right hand and the left hand of the potential difference. Then the measured electrocardiogram was amplified by the differential amplifier and the signals were passed HPF, LPF, and BPF filters. For removing the PPG's noise from the Motion artifact and temperature, we apply the reflective photoelectric volume pulse wave measurement method using green LED as a light source. The circuits was designed to be able to check the waveform using higher active amplification method at weak signals. For the validation of our device, the measured signals were compared with E2-KIT on same time. The results shows that the error does not exceed the maximum one, most of the data is confirmed to be issued Peak inspection of the same number.

  • In this study, we proposed an algorithm for P-wave detection. It is essential to decide the existence of P-wave and to extract some parameter about P-wave in automated ECG interpreter. Especially this paper describes the detection and estimation of three case, artrial flutter, coupled and non-coupled, which are very crucial things in ECG diagnosis. The performance of algorithm is showed by applying it to CSE(Common Standards for Quantative Electrocardiography) database.
