  • Fluorescent lamps are widely accepted to energy efficient commercial lighting applications. In designing a fluorescent lamp system, a ballast design heavily relies on the characteristic of a fluorescent lamp under consideration. Especially, at startup time, the transient characteristic of a fluorescent lamp puts much tighter specification of a design. In this paper, based on the transient characteristic at the startup time, a transient behavioral model of a fluorescent lamp is presented with an equivalent circuit. The model is applicable to the wide range of fluorescent lamps provided by different manufacturers. The experimental results are compared with the results provided by PSPICE simulation. The result shows the model is effective In practice. As a result, we could identify more accurate startup constraints to decide the design of either an electro mechanical or an electronic ballast.

  • Because heavy-duty construction vehicles such as excavators are required for good engine-room cooling capacity, a hydraulic gear motor is adopted in the cooling fan drive mechanism to actively control the output speed, instead of adopting the conventional ON/OFF type belt drive. While gear motors are normally limited to 140bars of operating pressure, those for the cooling fan are capable of operating at continuous pressures of up to 220bars. After assembly, all gear motors for high pressure must pass an aging test which is a kind of the wearing process between the gear teeth and motor housing. During the aging process with gradual pressure increments, gear sticking sometimes occurs due to abnormal wear, resulting in defects. This paper focuses on a gear-sticking free aging test controller that is designed together with the knowledge of an experienced operator and the analysis results of experimental data of the gear jamming phenomenon. From the aging experiment, it is demonstrated that the developed controller that can alter the setting pressure of the load pump is effective for stabilizing the abrupt increase in the motor input pressure, thus preventing the hydraulic motor from stopping. This is expected to be helpful for the reduction of defects and increase in productivity.

  • We have studied the effect of crystallization temperature, composition and film thickness, which are the fundamental processing parameters of lead zirconate titanate(PZT) thin film fabrication, in the respect of the piezoelectric properties by our pneumatic loading method(PLM). A great deal of research has been done in the field of characterization for piezoelectric thin films after the first report on the measurement for the piezoelectric coefficient of thin films in 1990. Even though the piezoelectric properties of thin films are very critical factors in the micro-electro mechanical system(MEMS) and thin film sensor devices, a few reports for the piezoelectric characterization are provided for the last decade unlikely the bulk piezoelectric devices. We have found that the piezoelectric properties of thin films are improved as the increase of crystallization temperature up to 750$\^{C}$ and this behavior can be also explained by the analysis of dielectric polarization hysteresis loop, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The effect of Zr/Ti composition has been also studied. This gives us the fact that the maximum piezoelectricity is found near Morphotropic Phase Boundary(MPB) as bulk PZT system does.

  • We have been implemented simple statistical pattern recognition methods for harmful gases classification using gas sensors array fabricated by MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical System) technology. The performance of pattern recognition method as a gas classifier is highly dependent on the choice of pre-processing techniques for sensor and sensors array signals and optimal classification algorithms among the various classification techniques. We carried out pre-processing for each sensor's signal as well as sensors array signals to extract features for each gas. We adapted simple statistical pattern recognition algorithms, which were PCA (Principal Component Analysis) for visualization of patterns clustering and MLR (Multi-Linear Regression) for real-time system implementation, to classify harmful gases. Experimental results of adapted pattern recognition methods with pre-processing techniques have been shown good clustering performance and expected easy implementation for real-time sensing system.

  • A current research basically diverted towards an increase in the operational output with the minimization of the materials used, which ultimately scaled down the dimensions of ceramic electronic components. In this direction the nano-technology pave the revolutionary changes in particular the electronic industries. The applications of nano-sized particles or nano-sized materials are hence, playing a significant role for various purposes. The PZT(lead, zirconium, titanium) based ceramics which, are reported to be ferroelectric materials have their important applications in the areas of surface acoustic waves (SAW), filters, infrared detectors, actuators, ferroelectric random access memory, speakers, electronic switches etc. Moreover, these PZT materials possess the large electro mechanical coupling factor, large spontaneous polarization, low dielectric loss and low internal stress etc. Hence, keeping in view the unique properties of PZT piezoelectric ceramics we also tried to synthesize indigenously the small sized PZT ceramic powder in the laboratory by using the modified sol-gel approach. In this paper, propyl alcohol based sol-gel method was used for preparation of PZT piezoelectric ceramic. The powder obtained by this sol-gel process was calcined and sintering to reach a pyrochlore-free crystal phase. The characterization of synthesized material was carried out by the XRD analysis and the surface morphology was determined by high resolution scanning electron microscopy.

  • Decay processes of accumulated charge in e-beam irradiated polymers during elevating temperature are observed using pulsed electro-acoustic measurement system. Since the polymeric materials have many superior properties such as light-weight, good mechanical strength, high flexibility and low cost, they are inevitable materials for spacecrafts. In space environment, however, the polymers sometimes have serious damage by irradiation of high energy charged particles. When the polymers of the spacecraft are irradiated by high energy charged particles, some of injected charges accumulate and remain for long time in the bulk of the polymers. Since the bulk charges sometimes cause the degradation or breakdown of the materials, the investigation of the charging and the decay processes in polymeric materials under change of temperature is important to decide an adequate material for the spacecrafts. By measuring the charge behavior in e-beam irradiated polymer, such as polyimide or polystyrene, it is found that the various accumulation and decay patterns are observed in each material. The results seem to be useful and be helpful to progress in the reliability of the polymers for the spacecraft.

  • Deposition of PZT with UV laser ablatio was applied for realization of thin film sensors and actuators. Deposition rate of more than 20nm/min was attained by pulsed KrF excimer laser deposition, which is fairly better than those obtained by the other methods. Perovskite phase was obtained at room temperature deposition with Fast Atom Beam(FAB) treatment and annealing. Smart MEMS(Micro electro-mechanical system) is now a suject of interest in the field of micro optical devices, micro pumps, AFM cantilever devices etc. It can be fabricated by deposition of PZT thin films and micromachining. PZT films of more than 1 micron thickness is difficult to obtain by conventional methods. This is the reason why we applied excimer laser ablation for thin film deposition. The remanent polarization Pr of 700nm PZT thin film was measured, and the relative dielectric constant was determined to about 900 and the dielectric loss tangent was also measured to be about 0.04. XRD analysis shows that, after annealing at 650 degrees C in 1 hour, the perovskite structure would be formed with some amount of pyrochlore phase, as is the case of the annealing at 750 degrees C in 1 hour.

  • This study produces electroconductive polycaprolactone (PCL)-based film with different amounts of graphene (G) through electrospinning, and the characteristics of the produced G/PCL composites are investigated. The G/PCL results are analyzed by comparing them with those obtained using pure PCL electrospun film as a control. The morphology of electrospun material is analyzed through scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Mechanical and electrical properties are also evaluated. Composites containing 1 % graphene have the highest elongation rate, and 5 % samples have the highest strength and elasticity. Graphene contents > 25 % show electro-conductivity, which level improves with increase of graphene content. Biological characteristics of G/PCL composites are assessed through behavioral analysis of neural cell attachment and proliferation. Cell experiments reveal that compositions < 50 % show slightly reduced cell viability. Moreover, graphene combinations facilitated cell proliferation compared to pure PCL. These results confirm that a 25 % G/PCL composition is best for application to systems that introduce external stimuli such as electric fields and electrodes to lead to synergistic efficiency of tissue regeneration.

  • A new experimental approach is proposed to detect a specific polymer dissolved in a liquid. Distinctive optical properties were found using a laser scattering technique when there is a polymer compound with almost no difference in optical properties (index of refraction) in a liquid phase. The index of refraction, which determines the refraction of light, is obtained by dissolving PCL and PLA. The used samples are biodegradable materials with similar properties and dissolved in a mixture of Chloroform 7: Methanol 3. To predict the optical properties, a 632-nm diode laser was used as the light source of the device, and an integrating sphere was used as the light receiver. Although PCL and PLA had a similar index of refraction of 1.46-1.48, the dissolved PCL showed a relative transmittance of 43%, and the dissolved PLA had a relative transmittance of 34%. The difference in optical properties of the pure polymer compound in the solid state or liquid state is not significantly different, and the difference in the dissolved state in the specific solvent is remarkable because the solubility differs in a specific solution and is randomly distributed.

  • A micro gas sensor for formaldehyde (HCHO) gas was fabricated by using MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical System) technology and the sol-gel process. The sensing materials of the $SnO_2$-ZnO system were synthesized by the sol-gel method. The crystal structure and thermal analysis of the $SnO_{2}$-ZnO were characterized by XRD and DSC-TGA. The fabricated gas sensors were tested at various gas concentrations (0.5~5.0 ppm) and different operation temperatures ($350{\sim}550^{\circ}C$). The $SnO_2$-10 mol%ZnO sensor showed the highest sensitivity ($R_s=0.24$) for 1.0 ppm-formaldehyde at $500^{\circ}C$ and response time (90% saturation time) was within 20 seconds.
