  • The torque characteristics of permanent magnet(PM) motor is varied according to magnet width. In this paper, the design method of magnet and magnetic circuit is proposed in order to improve the torque of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(IPMSM). This paper presents the effects of pole arc ratio and salient pole ratio on the torque and torque ripple in the IPMSM with concentrated winding.

  • The detection of the normal zones in the coil winding and the initiation of the proper dump sequence have been one of the most important areas in the superconducting magnet technology. In this paper, the process to derive optimal dump sequence has been investigated through quench simulation and analysis of magnetically coupled superconducting magnet system. The magnet terminal voltage and maximum temperature rise in the quench initiated point are calculated with respect to various input variables such as operation current, dump resistance, etc. The experimental system is comprised of sc solenoidal coil, data aquisition device, external circuit breakers and dump resistor. The quench behavior of the magnet(e.g., temperature profile and the voltage signal) was measured. From this results, theoretical predictions were found to coincide with the experimental observations.

  • In this study, we present a comparison of multistage axial flux permanent-magnet machines (AFPMs) with different topologies for use as 100 W-class portable generating systems. Three topologies were selected, and the maximum power density and high level of efficiency were achieved by following the response surface methodology (RSM) in the design. Three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) was used to conduct numerical experiments to obtain the optimum design using the RSM and suggest a proper configuration of the portable generating system.

  • The characteristics of magnetizing system considering the anisotropy and the nonlinearity are analyrized using PEM in This paper. The case of magnetizing the ferrite magnet with 12 poles is analyrized. The anisotropy characteristic is considered when ferrite magnet which is widely used as permanent magnet is magnetized. The Nonlinear characteristic of magnetizing yoke aid ferrite is considered because the current is in the saturation region. When the magnetizing current value is over the optimum value, the magnet is magnetized with 24 poles. This is not the case of our expectation. Thus, for the case of our expected magnetizing form, it is the conclusion that the optimum magnetizing current value is selected.

  • An air circuit breaker (ACB) with novel double-breaker contact and permanent magnet actuator (PMA) is presented. Three-dimensional (3-D) finite element method (FEM) is employed to compute the electro-dynamic repulsion forces, including the Holm force and Lorentz force, which are acting on the static and movable contacts. The electro-dynamic repulsion forces of different contact pieces are computed, illustrating there is an optimal number of contact pieces for the ACB being studied. The electro-dynamic repulsion force of each contact, which varies from the outer position to the inner position, is also computed. Finally, the contacts of the double-breaker are manufactured according to the analyzed results to validate the simulations.

  • This paper deals with the design and characteristic analysis of electro-magnet/permanent-magnet (EM-PM) hybrid levitation and propulsion device for high-speed magnetically levitated (maglev) vehicle. The machine requires PMs with high coercive force in order to levitate the vehicle by only PMs, and propulsion force is supplied by long-stator linear synchronous motor (LSM). The advantages of this configuration are an increasing levitation airgap length and decreasing total weight of the vehicle, because of the zero-power levitation control. Several design considerations such as machine structure, manufacturing, and control strategy are described. Moreover, the levitation and propulsion device for high-speed maglev vehicle has been designed and analyzed usign the electromagnetic circuit and FE analysis. In order to verify the design scheme and feasibility of maglev application, 3-DOF static force test set is implemented and tested. The obtained experimental data using the static tester shows the validity of the design and analysis approaches.

  • We design a new actuator of 3-axis motion for high performance optical devices. The actuator makes it possible to control the tilting motion by using moving magnet and PCB-coil, which have benefits in price and manufacturing. To predict the characteristics of the actuator, especially the effect of moving magnet, finite element method and electro-magnetic analysis were used. By comparing simulation data with experimental results, we verified the accuracy of the simulation and the superiority of the present.

  • Since it started the researches on a maglev train on 1960, Germany and Japan arrived to putting to practical use level and accomplished most tests from their test-line. Korea is in progress the preparation for a practical use of low-speed maglev train in 110 [km/h] class and Korea Railroad Research Institute(KRRI) is in progress of a research about core technology of maglev system for high-speed tube train of 700 [km/h] class. In this paper, authors suggest an effective design method of Linear Synchronous Motor(LSM) for high-speed tube train of 700 [km/h] class which has a wound type electro-magnet. Then, authors calculate a variety of properties by changing speed of the LSM model which is designed by a method based on some theoretical equations. Then, authors verify the validity of the method based on some theoretical equations through a verification of property values by Finite Element Method(FEM) analysis method. Finally, in order to design a shape of pole-shoe part of LSM electro-magnet which is hard to design with a basic design method, authors analyze a transition of property values by changing a pole-shoe width and current of the electro-magnet through an analytical method by FEM.

Characteristic Analysis and Experimental Verification of the Axially Asymmetric Structured Outer-Rotor Type Permanent Magnet Motor

  • In this study, we have dealt with a design characteristic of outer-rotor type permanent magnet (PM) motor applied for Engine Cooling Fan (ECF). When we design a motor with structure like this type, it is required as a requisite to consider 3-Dimensional (3-D) effect by implementing a non-linear Finite Element Analysis (FEA) due to a yoke-ceiling, which is perpendicular to the axis of rotation. We have analyzed identical models under three different conditions. The analysis has been performed through a non-linear 2-Dimensional (2-D) and 3-D FEA. Finally, the results have been compared with Back Electro-Motive Force (BEMF) value of actual motor model. As a result, a yoke-ceiling function as an additional flux path and the operating point on B-H curve of rotor material is shifted to non-saturation region relatively. Accordingly, magnetic flux linkage can be increased and motor size can be decreased under same input condition to satisfy ECF specification, such as torque.

  • We analyzed an important part of control valve, magnet unit, which is used to control the fluid. Magnetic circuit which is composed of magnet and yoke is analyzed using finite element method. Then, flux density and coil force were calculated and compared with those of measured. According to the simulation results, the gap field, force constant, and permeance coefficient were 3~5 kG, 27.5 N/A, 22.1, respectively, which corresponded reasonably well with the measured values. We also obtained reluctance factor of 1.1 and fringing factor of 1.4 by simulation.
