  • Life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology can be used to assess impacts on the environment that might be generated during treatment of wastewater and sludge treatment. In this work, LCA methodology was suggested to evaluate monthly environmental impact of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Two field scale WWTPs, A2/O process and conventional activated sludge process (CAS), were selected as target plants and the operational data were collected from those plants. As the function units, the unit volume of treated wastewater of $1m^3$ and 1 kg T-N eq. removed were selected. The environmental effect of target WWTPs operation were assessed as impact categories such as global warming potential, eutrophication potential, and so on. From monthly profiles of each index, it was shown that the environmental impact of WWTPs has seasonal patterns influenced by the influent flow rate variation causing higher impacts in winter than summer. This is due to the fact that there were no significant increase in the electricity consumption and chemical usage during the summer while the treated volume of wastewater was increased.

  • Most air pollution and smog are a result of the burning of fossil fuels. The use of fossil fuels also causes acid rain and global warming. So the need for solar energy utilization is increased. It is essentially important to make efforts to reduce usage of fossil energy resources. In this study, we analyzed the correlation between climatic elements(Cloud cover, Duration of sunshine, Temperature) and the photovoltaic power generation. Cloud cover of the correlation coefficient was 0.87. And duration of sunshine of the correlation coefficient was 0.93. The order of the correlation coefficient was duration of sunshine, cloud cover, temperature. To accurately analyze of the degree of correlation for the photovoltaic power generation, additional research about climatic elements that show a high correlation is needed.

  • Korea is an industrial country that overspends energy and has a policy that is more focused on a supply side. When an urban developmental program is to set up, surveys are carried out only with the respect to electricity, telecommunication, gas, and heating sources. Based on the existing survey results, the problems related to the supply side are being dealt with more importantly and the quantities of those supplies are estimated only by each energy source. The aim of this study is to provide basic information on energy consumption patterns of a diverse comsumer groups including industry, transportation, commerce, public and household to plan diverse energy policies. Through this basic information, it may be possible to analyze the energy consumption pattern by each consumer group and provide data for setting up efficient energy policies by the government. The energy consumption map that are analyzed and developed by the data obtained from Busan municipal area will be deposited and used as a part of the national energy statistics.

  • Ecological architecture enables people to recycle and reuse architectural resources within the category of ecosystem and also to minimize the effect on environment in a whole process, including architectural planning, usage and exhaustion to use sustainable energies. Rammed earth wall construction method utilized in EcoCenter located in Crystalwaters ecological village in Austrailia is a good example, which maximizes its advantages and also covers its limits to use soil and wood as structural resources. In a case of wood, they used non-treated timber to minimize environmental load and utilized used materials in openings. In the roofs, aluminum coated steel which is plated with zinc collects rain effectively even though it is not regenerable. Nontoxic finishes and insulation in floor and ceiling with used papers are able to minimize its environmental load. Solar energy system applied in EcoCenter enables them to market extra energy with electricity companies as well as support needs of its own buildings to utilize photovoltaic panel system with PV panels. Passive solar system is planned effectively in heating and cooling to apply regenerative walls in a use of rammed earth wall construction and natural ventilation systems through openings.

  • The ZigBee network has been considered to monitor electricity usage of home appliances in the smart grid network. ZigBee, however, may suffer from a coexistence problem with wireless local area network (WLAN). In this paper, to resolve the coexistence problem between ZigBee network and WLAN, we propose a new protocol constructing a cognitive smart grid network for supporting monitoring of home appliances. In the proposed protocol, home appliances first estimates the transmission timing and channel information of WLAN by reading request to send/clear to send (RTS/CTS) frames of WLAN. Next, based on the estimated information, home appliances transmit a data at the same time as WLAN transmission. To manage the interference between WLAN and smart grid network, we propose a cognitive beamforming algorithm. The beamforming algorithm is designed to guaranteeing zero interference to WLAN while satisfying a required rate for smart metering. We also propose an energy efficient rate adaptation algorithm. By slowing down the transmission rate while satisfying an imperceptible impact of quality of service (QoS) of the receiver, the home appliance can significantly save transmit power. Numerical results show that the proposed multiple antenna technique provides reliable communications for smart metering with reduced power comparing to the simple transmission technique.

  • Recently, the attention to renewable energy has increased globally because of the environmental issue and the global energy crisis. Accordingly, south korea is focused on increasing the renewable energy usage. And the government enforced a law to the public buildings to install the renewable energy facilities. In this study, the building to evaluate renewable energy consumption and supply ratio was selected. This building has 9.79% of renewable energy supply ratio by PV system. In this study, the method for improving renewable energy supply ratio was analyzed using additional PV system. And The 5 methods to increasing electricity were evaluated. The method of increase 4.24 times PV arrays area is most efficient way to increase the renewable supply ratio. The case 1, show that the increasing renewable energy supply ratio of 39.2% compared to exsiting PV system. The result of the above, consider the additional supply of renewable energy.

  • The energy usage and the economical feasibility of the typical two story office building in the three urban locations of South Korea are evaluated as the eight orientations. The smallest energy consume is shown at the true south. The ranges of the low energy consume are $-3l5^{\circ}{\sim}0^{\circ}\;and\;-135^{\circ}{\sim}-180^{\circ}$. There are obvious advantages of passive solar designs such as using a fully glazed facade at the true south in the building. The General Low voltage plan is the effective way for the office building when does not required the high voltage electricity. The energy cost of KEPCO is compared to that of XCEL ENERGY. The portion of the customer charge of XCEL ENERGY is about 10% but it is about 50% of the total tariff of KEPCO. The effective way to save the energy cost is by reducing the operating energy of XCEL ENERGY plane but the most effective way is reduce the contracting energy of KEPCO plane.

  • Several models and methods have been developed to verify the improvement of energy performance in retrofit buildings. The verification is important to confirm the effectiveness of new technologies or retrofits. Inverse model toolkit proposed by ASHRAE evaluates the changes of the energy performance of retrofit buildings by using actual energy consumption data. In this study, the inverse model toolkit was used to analyze heating and cooling energy performance of an office building. Analyzed coefficients of correlation of actual energy consumption with estimated energy consumption was above 0.92 and well fitted. It was confirmed that energy consumption of natural gas decreased by 43.4% and also that electricity decreased by 13.8%, after the retrofit of the case building. For the energy usage, cooling energy was increased by 7.4%, heating energy was decreased by 42.3%, hot water and cooking were increased by 3.4%, lighting and electronics were decreased by 19.3%, and the total energy was decreased by 18.9%.
